tips and tricks How to use WiFi with Internet Explorer

How to use WiFi with Internet Explorer

One of the Samsung Epix’s great features is its built-in WiFi. This allows you to connect to the Internet via a Wireless network which has two big advantages:

  • Connecting to the internet using WiFi does not use data on your phone plan
  • Its generally faster than even the 3G network

By default the Samsung Epix does not allow you to use WiFi to access the Internet via Internet Explorer, luckily there is an easy fix.

  1. Start > Settings > Connection Tab (at the bottom) > Proxy Manager
  2. Put a check next to “Do not use a proxy server”
  3. Click “OK” in the upper right corner of the screen
You can now access the Internet via WiFi using Internet Explorer.

I didn’t sign up for the data plan so accessing the internet will be extra charges. Are you telling me that I will not be charged for internet usage by using your tip?

  2. david Says:

    Roosevelt,
If you do not have a data plan you can use WiFi to access the internet for free. You have to be VERY careful that you don’t accidently use your wireless carrier’s data service though, because you WILL be charged for that. I dont know how to force no data via wireless carrier on the Epix off the top of my head, I am going to make a post in the Forums to see if anyone knows though.

  3. John Smith Says:

Go to the wireless manager and turn off the “phone” part of the Epix. Then turn on WiFi. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to receive calls or text messages, but it’s a 100% fool-proof way that the carrier won’t charge you.

  4. Gary Says:

Thanks for the tip. I spent 15 minutes on the phone with AT&T trying to solve this problem in vain. He asked me to call the router vendor or reset my router. I just googled and found this, it only took 10 seconds to get it working. Many thanks. Power to Google!

  5. Tom B Says:

I use my EPIX all the time in my home network. Turn on the wireless and let it find the network. Configure if you are using any security settings with your router. Once your wireless connection is configured and connected, then you can open IE and surf the web. Just don’t click on medianet, that’s where you pay to play.

Also use the tip posted above!!

  6. Josh Says:

Thanks — important tip. Let me add one other item (as I’m just getting to know my epix):
Be sure Internet Explorer starts fresh after turning off the proxies for IE. If you don’t know if IE is already running (as I didn’t), go to Programs > Applications > Task Manager and kill it. Next time you start IE it’ll work on Wifi. will look into surfing on wifi rather than ATT 3G when phone is “on”

  7. Blentz Says:

I find the best solution here:
    http://www.myblackjack2.com/?p=24
It’s an application that can turn of your data connection completely! You can still use WiFi.
Thanks to the website admin and the programmer.

  8. david Says:

Blentz – I tried MoDaCo NoData out but it doesnt seem to work on the Samsung Epix. Did you get it to work on your Samsung Epix?

  9. Blentz Says:

Yes, it works on my Epix. After installing, you must run the program and toggle all three entries to disabled. Then any program that tries to use the internet using cell is blocked but using WiFi is ok. For mine, when I run the MoDaCo NoData there are 3 entries:
    AT&T IMS – DISABLED
    AT&T ISP – DISABLED
    MEdia Net – DISABLED

    Hope it works for ya!

  10. Kevin Says:

Hey guys, I’ve been reading what you’ve posted and it hasn’t worked for me. I purchased my Epix 4 days ago and can’t get the WiFi to work. Here are the problems I run into:

Go to Start-> Settings -> Connections -> Proxy Manager -> Check the Box

Turn on WiFi and connect to the network with full service.

Go to IE and try to load a page

Receive 0kb and an error comes up saying ” Cannot Connect ” – Cannot connect with current connection settings. To change your connection settings, tap Settings.

When I tap settings it brings me to the Connection menu page. Under that it says My WAP Networks which states ” The connection is pre-configured. It cannot be modified.

In that page I have 2 tabs 1. Tasks 2. Advanced

When I click on Select Networks both tabs are configured to My WAP Networks.

Any ideas to get the WiFi working on my phone would be GREATLY APPRECIATED. I just got off the phone with both ATT and Samsung and it lead nowhere for 2 hours.

If you need anymore information I’ll reply ASAP.

    Thank you!!!!

  11. Kevin Says:

Got it working. Did a Hard Reset lost all my calendar info but got the WiFi! Thanks to this site

  12. tylerwku Says:

All you have to do is call AT&T and say you would like to disable Media Net and it is that simple!

  13. david Says:

tyler – will that effect your ability to use your data connection

  14. Rick V Says:

Can you use the WiFi to check POP/IMAP mail?

  15. david Says:

Rick V, yes you can use WiFi to check POP/IMAP mail… I dont think that is anything data related that you can’t use WiFi for… (Someone correct me if im wrong on this last part :) )

  16. gina Says:

  17. Embree24 Says:

I have done everything you guys have said here but i stil cannot connect to the internet. I will go to a web page and it will say on the bottom connecting then it will say locating and do nothing for about 30 seconds. Finally it will say “The page cannot be displayed or downloaded because the connection was lost. Check the connection and try aain later.” The thing is, im connected to my network with a great connection. This is very frutrating could anyone help? I’d appreciate it

  18. Ken Says:

I want to connect to my home WIFI … however I use network access security on my that requires MAC address entries on the router.

So … is it possible to find the MAC address on the Epix?

  19. G Says:

The mac address for teh epix is in settings>system tab then version.

  20. ed Says:

  21. eddy Says:

    thanks guys
casue i have the same problem can’t not in the internet thru wifi, i have no data plan. i could ping my ip address on my epix w/ my desktop.

  22. Grant Says:

I was not successfull at getting IE to use my uverse wifi. Installed Opera mobile 9.5 and works just fine now.

  23. Mike Says:

I have tried all of the responses here and none have let me connect using wifi. Tried Hard reset, and checking the proxy box. I have a connected service in the wifi. But only some websites will load. Like Pandora or just download sites. It wont pull up google or anything like that.

  24. Kim Says:

THANK YOU….. IVE been trying for 2 weeks also!!!! haha

  25. lilh1990 Says:

hello, i have a data block, will wifi still work?

  26. david Says:

lilh990 – by datablock you mean that you cannot use data via AT&T right? If so, then WiFi will still work just fine (since it transfers data across your Epix’s WiFi card, not cellular radio)

  27. boyda1974 Says:

I have my phone unlocked, and can make call and recieve text message, but I can’ t get online or rec’ picture message. I have service with T-mobile, and tried changing the settings, but I’m still at a stand still. Does anyone have a solution for this?

  28. cara Says:

my wifi wont let me click grant permission, how can i get it to grant permission?

  29. Regina Says:

I tried everything that you guys said to do on here and I personally had no luck. I spent 3 1/2 hours on the phone with At&t and my internet provider and got absolutely no where with any of them. Finally they gave me the number for samsung to call them directly to find out what to do. Samsung gave me an unlock code to put in the phone and within seconds I was able to use the wi-fi. I don’t know why they don’t unlock them before you get the phones other than maybe AT&T just wants you to purchase the $30.00 extra plan so you can surf the net. But if you call samsung they will walk you through the unlocking process. I hope this helps.

  30. ak Says:

if wifi is not working, i have done hard reset n its workin!!!!!!

  31. bigj0sh Says:

Thanks guys i just got mine yesterday and couldnt figure it out

i had to combile alot of these to make it work though
    do the hard reset
then use the wireless manager to turn off phone and on wifi
then go to task manager close internet expl
    then open a new one

  32. sweeezy Says:

These steps will allow your phone to only connect to the internet when you are connected to wifi. It will not use AT7T’s network after you make these changes.

    1) Start | Settings | Connections | Wi-Fi | Network Adapters. Make sure that the SyChip Jaguar WLAN GSPI card is set to connect to Work (default setting I think)
    2) Start | Settings | Connections | Connectoins | Advanced | Select Networks. Set the top and bottom drop down menues to Work. This will force all data connections to use the Work Connection and WiFi if it is turned on.

  33. Howard C Says:

Was told today by ATT that you MUST have a $30 data plan to use WIFI. I previously had been able to, but has since been disabled by ATT. No one could (or would) explain why I need to pay ATT to access my home network

  34. Ken Says:

So has ATT made it impossible to use home wifi without paying for a data plan?? I have the wifi setup, and connected to my home network, but when I try to load a page on IE, it just stalls, and wont load. but epix says connection is perfect. help!

  35. hl Says:

So ATT did in fact block it. I was having problems with connecting to wifi on both Opera and IE over the past few weeks… I thought I screwed with the settings somehow. I hard reset this morning and spent the past few hours trying to fix, but nothing works. A page might load here and there, but nothing consistent. Great, I lost all my settings and apps and can’t still use wi-fi. Im switching carriers once my contact expires. ATTs plans are just ridiculously expensive.

  36. Seth Says:

I unlocked my Epix a few weeks back. ATT was upset with me, but I went over to T-Mobile and now have their SIM card in my Epix. ATT uses a lot of intimidation tactics to get you to stay with them, but I can tell you this fact: my Wi-Fi works without issue at all. I have wireless in my home and I connect to the internet using IE without problems. I DO NOT have a data plan with T-Mobile. I changed carriers due to ATT’s requirement to have a data plan on their “Pocket PC” phones. I don’t use the data app’s when I’m away from the house, so I did not see the point in paying for a service that I hardly ever used. My only problem now is that I cannot get MMS pics to download. It’s annoying at best, but at least I can still access my Pocket Express app via Wi-Fi.

  37. Mark Says:

Can you get streaming radio broadcasts on the Epix via wifi without a data plan? I can get the internet and I’ve tried to acces iheartradio.com, but I get the message “flash player is not installed or up to date”, although I installed the newest version and did a soft reset. I live in an area where I have limited reception, and this would be ideal when I’m outside in the summer!

  38. Wayne Says:

I tried all these steps and even unlocked the phone with the subsidy code. I can use wifi with apps and MiniMo and a trial version of opera, but not with Pocket Internet Explorer. I will probably break down and by Opera.

  39. Ryno Says:

    Howard C & hl:
I do not have an AT&T data plan and I recently spoke to an AT&T rep. who told me that AT&T now requires all smartphone users to pay the $30 for the plan. She said that if I bought the phone before the policy was in place (which I did) I would be grandfathered in and wouldn’t have to pay the data plan charges. Great, except for AT&T has blocked my WiFi. What’s next, AT&T blocks my Solitaire unless I pay a gaming fee? Can I still use my Contacts or will I have to pay a fee to have AT&T remember phone numbers for me? Please don’t tell me Bubble Breaker is next!

Does anyone know how to get out of this?

  40. Bonnie Says:

I too am switching away from ATT

  41. DMoney Says:

If theirs anything wrong with your phone I would just keep calling at&t. I have always found better results the second or 3rd time in calling. They have even been alot quicker for some reason the 1st one takes an hour and the next get shorter. But generally in the end I get what I want.
WiFi I would first state that this is a pc named samsung epix that I bought from your store. It is not working with my wifi and it should be. If it is not working I would like a warrenty or insurance claim to a phone that will work without having a data plan I dont need to us a wifi connection with a wifi pre ready phone.

  42. Iggy Says:

I have an HTC Tilt phone with WiFi capability. I set up a seperate network connection to access my home newtwork. It takes me about 40 seconds to switch connections and I’m off surfing the web.

But lately I haven’t been able to connect to the AT&T 3G system. I haven’t changed any settings. Can’t understand why it quit. I don’t have a data plan because I don’t need the service all that much and didn’t mind paying for what little I used, didn’t have a plan before and it worked. I go to many places that offer free WiFi and easily connect in those places.
You think AT&T shut down thier customes that don’t have a plan??
I’ve been with AT&T since 1995 and never had problems….till now.

  43. Rodger Says:

Just recently picked up an unlocked Epix last week & flashed Windows Mobile 6.5. I’m not sure if this had been talked about before but I have a question concerning WiFi.

I don’t have a data plan either, but I can use the WiFi with no problem. But, if I forget to turn on the wifi, the phone by default tries to activate a 3G data connection. Is there a way to disable the phone from doing this automatically, so that anytime I try accessing the internet it will just simply turn on the wifi and try to connect to that instead? This sounds like it could either be a regedit becaue I couldn’t find anything within the phone’s settings to disable connecting to wap.cingular.

    Any help would be awesome!

  44. anna901 Says:

i have tried a combo of everything you all have said, and i still cant get it to access wifi. the last time i tried it, it said some about entering an IP address, how do i find out what my IP address is for my phone and for my home wifi…

  45. Carel Says:

I ordered a SAMSUNG I907 EPIX to take to Europe and plan to put in a local SIM card in Spain. Will I run into all these ATT problems? I am hoping to use it for internet as the hotels have wifi. Has anyone used a SiM in Europe…. and thus with no ATT or other plan? Thanks!
