Samsung Today 2.0

Download

Samsung released a modification to their popular Samsung Today homescreen that replaces the AT&T Navigation link at the bottom with a much more useful Calendar listing.

Just install the CAB file on your Samsung Epix and  go to Start > Settings > Today > Items tab  and select  Samsung Today.

Samsung Today 2.0

The addition of the Calendar items is a great addition to this already great Today screen.

not as great as it seems. every time you reload, or turn phone offand on, it removes most of the shortcuts. also, it wont say AT&T. it says ATT. which isnt so big of a deal… shortcut thing got to me because i am always having to pull my battery out to “unlock” the epix when it is standby mode…

  2. Jason Says:

Well what a surprise. Another botch by Samsung, the company that designs and manufactures phones without bothering to test them.

I’ve spent today dealing with my Epix shutting itself off randomly while I was typing, sounding notification alerts for no reason whatsoever, not sounding alerts for some of my emails, and of course missing calls because the ascending ring is too quiet and I don’t want to install the patch if it means losing notification alerts.

That’s it, it’s going back. What a heap of crap. This is perhaps the best useless phone I have ever owned. By which I mean it would be the best phone I ever owned if Samsung hadn’t been so careless and sloppy and negligent in designing it. How you can release a piece of technology without testing it is beyond me.

Oh wait, I just discovered another bug – now my Epix isn’t showing the Today screen when I lock it then bring it out of standby, which means I have to unlock it in order to see the time. Thanks, Samsung. You really know how to take pride in your products. I’m sure your reputation will be soaring once word of the mightly Epix gets around.

  3. david Says:

hntryoung, I dont have the problem you described. My shortcuts on Samsung Today dont disappear between restarts, the AT&T does say ATT but I dont care about that. If youre having to take your battery out to “unlock” the Epix I think there bigger issues at play. I would back up everything and perform a hard-reset and restore factory settings. Id then slowly add applications back on. Id steer clear of things like S2U2, Remove Exchange Settings, Zenyee — the programs that “hijack” Windows Mobile functionality and try to change it.

  4. david Says:

Jason – sorry to hear youve had such a bad experience with the Epix. I’ll be the first to admit the Epix has its fair share of problems which is half the reason I started this website… best of luck with your new phone!

  5. jimmy Says:

Hello…is there a way to have the calendar time show up as, say 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM instead of 1600-1700?

  6. Chris Says:

I wish this phone could be coaxed to display the date in Samsung Today, i look down at my phone and think… do i really have to press a button to figure the date out? and why can’t the phone have a handy screen saver that blacks out the screen but faintly shows the date and time along with the number of voicemails emails and text messages you have. This phone could be soo much more, yet it seems that the only folks interested in making it into 1/4 the phone it can be are the consumers… I don’t think i spent $350 on a phone to be a beta tester, I want one easy update that turns my phone into my favorite robot pal, yet avoids the paradox of skynet…. Thank you all.

  7. c10250 Says:

Does anyone know how to turn off the sound?

  8. Jake Says:

I installed this and rebooted but I don’t have the option under Today…. I wonder what went wrong.

  9. david Says:

jimmy, I dont know of a way to use as 12 hour clock on cal items for this version. If i find any settings that allow it to display a 12 hour clock for calendar items ill make a post.

  10. david Says:

Jake – On your Samsung Epix, goto Start > Settings > Today > Items tab > Select “Samsung Today”

  11. david Says:

    C10250 – only by decreasing the phone’s volume :(

  12. Michael S Says:

    david,

You state to stay away from S2U2. Have you or anyone tried S2U2 on this Epix phone? I am curious about whether it works or not.

  13. david Says:

Michael, There are people that report it working just fine for them. I had problems running S2U2 version 1.4 – try running version 1.33, ive heard that runs alright.

  14. Matt Says:

Chris, if you use your stylus or cursor and hold down over the clock for a few seconds an options tab will appear on the clock. There you can select Dual Clock and it will show the time zone, date, and time for two places. Not a permanent fix but you will be able to see the date.

Also, two new features I like with this is that the settings tab now has a cursor to change it from the 4-way navigation to the cursor and also when using the 4-way navigation you can press the button and it will now unlock the settings without having to use switch to the cursor or use your finger/stylus.

  15. Matt Says:

Hmm… I’ll give it a shot now that it shows calendar appointments, but it would be nice to see the date displayed too. And the ATT instead of AT&T looks like Samsung didn’t both to account for escaping ampersands. On Windows platforms, an ampersand preceding a character causes it to be used as a keyboard accelerator and displays underscored, which is used in menus or command buttons (like the F in File being underlined or the O in OK). All they had to do was modify the string before it was displayed…… sad.

  16. wess Says:

I like it.. I’m going to try it for a while & see if I want to stick with it.

    Only complaints..
    1) Sometimes I need/like to see the next 2 or 3 upcoming appointments on the today screen. It would be nice for this screen to allow more than just one. This could be accomplished by: including an option to get rid of the clock and use that room for additional appointments and/or including an option to use smaller text for appointments.

    2) Need to show conventional 12 hour time instead of 24 hour time on appointments

  17. david Says:

wess – i agreed with you on both account. I doubt Samsung will release the this theme with those changes though :( Changing the time of the calendar might want to be something that could be figured out with Samsung’s help. I think changing the number of calendar items show would be much more difficult.

  18. John Says:

Its just too bad I cant customize it myself, and have that bottom link be whatever I want it to be. Thats what I want to see next.

  19. Mido Says:

Hey do you think they can add the date to this interface… it would make it so much better.

  20. Noah Says:

How do you lock the keys with this today screen?

  21. Unkl Tony Says:

I will admit I purchased this phone know that it was not perfect but after using my previous smartphone and having it nicely tweeked the way I liked it, it was hard to fall into a routine of using this phone with the same ease.
Today 3/18/2009 I installed the “Samsung today screen” and I have finally started to feel more at home with this phone now. I never considered using this today screen until I saw the change from navigator to calendar

  22. david Says:

Noah – hold down the RED lock/hang-up button on your Samsung Epix for a couple seconds.

  23. jpm Says:

I downloaded this but still nothing is happing. I went to the today screen and tried to select Samsung Today but it won’t let me select it.. What’s the deal?

  24. jon Says:

I downloaded it and everything was working fine, but it keeps setting the time ahead ONE hour and i have to keep fixing it.. is there a fix or will this keep on going on? is so then i don’t think it is worth downloading..

  25. david Says:

jon – do you live somewhere that does not have day light savings time?

  26. ana Says:

I will say, this has been the worst phone I’ve ever had, it not as ease as a Palm Treo, Blackberry or hey even the iphone, this does not allow you to really custom the phone to your likes or needs. It basically gives few options take it or leave it. I am others, have missed calls, drop calls, freezes, battery life is horrible, i have to charge it almost every day, even if i have not use much, battery is draining in standby mode. Text in the largest is still small, when you reply a text, the allowable space is for two lines, other than that you would need to scroll to see begining of the text you are writing, why should the screen support more space for text received than for writing, the one rec;d i already read, why have in there taking my writting space. I cannot sync notes, which has been a great plus for me with other PDAs. I am very unhappy with what would of been a great phone if they would of bother surverying customers and reading about todays business needs. Since i have it by contract i am stuck with this pc of junk until August, after that it bye bye Epix.

  27. Jon Says:

I like it! Works great for me!

Guys, if you don’t like Samsung Today go to http://www.freewareppc.net and download rlToday (or any other Today theme). Then download the plugin for rlToday from this site. There’s an OSX Leopard theme on this site under “themes” that you can download that works great! Or you can google “rlToday themes” and download whatever you want. Install the cab file of the theme you download to your device. Then to view a new theme on your home screen, just click on Start/Settings/Personal/Today/Items then check “rlToday” and click “options” to the left and pick the theme you downloaded. It’s a PPC phone, you can do whatever you want to customize it. Just make sure that the theme fits the 320×320.

  28. Eric S. Mueller Says:

The Epix will be my last Windows Mobile device. I’m on my 3rd unit already. I’ve had 2 warranty replacements since I got it in October.

I put this Samsung Today on my Epix. It doesn’t really do anything, but I’m happy to get rid of the AT&T Navigator. It never made sense to me why anybody would pay $10 a month IN ADDITION TO a 3G plan when Google Maps is free. It seems like the only people who make on out that deal are AT&T stockholders. OK, I get it now.

  29. Ana Says:

To whom ever it may concern: can we get these comments (to be viewed) in order of last post on the top of the page, and not have to scroll all away down everytime a reply or a new comment has been added.
    Thanks,

  30. OnAFriday Says:

For those who don’t like the Today screen (default or Samsung), try SPB Pocket Plus (v5.11 I believe is the most current). I just installed it, and WHAT A DIFFERENCE. I should mention that I installed it on an AT&T 8525. I am considering ordering an Epix (which is why I am browsing this forum). =)

  31. david Says:

Just an FYI to everyone – SPB Pocket Plus is a commercial app.

  32. Lance Says:

My phone tells me when I have a meeting that is coming up….can anyone tell me how to turn off that weird robotic computer voice that talks to me all day long? Please…..I’m going crazy!!!!! :)

  33. Stephen Says:

Ok, for some reason my camera, mail, MSG and calander buttons on the bottom of the phone have all stopped working. I get an error msg when I press one of them. Then I go to fix it in the button assignment page and they all say what they should be saying. Any suggestions?

  34. Stephen Says:

    er. Calender.

  35. J.D. Says:

    Lance -

    Go to Start>Settings
Under the “Personal” Tab click on “Voice Command”
Click on the Option button on the right
Uncheck the “Announce calender reminders” box.

That should take care of it, and prevent those weird looks you probably get from your coworkers.

  36. Dee Pickus Says:

I tested this phone for a month without any problems whatsoever. My company then purchased 7 of these phones. Of the 7, 2 of them so far keep overheating. The phone gets so hot you almost cannot hold it, then as soon as you try to use it, it freezes. The only fix is the take the battery out and put it back in. Then it starts to get cooler after that.

Does anyone have the same problem or know what to do to fix it?

  37. Aaron Says:

how do i change the at&t navigator to the event calender?

  38. ruthe Says:

wow I’m so glad you have this site too! I’m a fan from myblackjack2.com but my BJii died so I upgraded to the epix. I love this update to the samsung today screen – works great for me! thanks again David – for all of your sites :) .

  39. SAMSAM Says:

Can anyone help me out on this situation? I have a Samsung Epix i907 and somehow different types of clock pictures came up on my cell that’s round with black or white background, digital dual clock, square clock i think, and it lets you pick 12 or 24 hr clock. Can you please tell me how to get back to this becuz its not in the manual or tutorial. Thanks.Sam

  40. david Says:

SAMSAM, not sure what you mean. Where exactly do these “clock pictures” come up? What are you trying to do – change the way that the time is displayed on the Samsung Today 2.0 theme?

  41. TeHHerzog Says:

Hey how do i access my aim or other instant messaging from the samsung today screen can i swap shortcuts with it so instead of email i have instant messaging?

  42. J.D. Says:

@TeHHerzog – I do not believe the home screen is customizable (at least not easily and requiring an extensive knowledge of programming). You should be able to easily put a link under the shortcut menu however. If you do figure out how to change the home screen please let us know, I’m sure a lot of people would be very interested.

  43. Jennifer Says:

Love this app. However, I noticed that after I installed it, when I switched from ring to vibrate on the phone or vice versa, some of my settings would reverse themselves.

    Random Changes:
    * email pop up window notifier returned – i hate that window. it’s distracting.
    * caller id when i placed calls from the phone went from showing my name to saying blocked or private number, even though the setting said allow caller id.

When I reset the phone and removed the app, these changes stopped happening on their own.

    Anyone else have these issues?

    Thanks
    jennifer

  44. Cami Says:

is there a way to turn the sound off when you tap the options at the top of it to go to setting, top contacts, etc?
because it’s reeally starting to get on my nerves.

  45. Lee Harrison Says:

This is the worst phone I have ever had. The wifi doesn’t work half the time. The alerts are completely spastic and annoying. The inbox has dropped all my every third day since we converted to exchange 2007. The touch screen is almost useless. There is no way to reboot the phone without taking the battery out and it needs rebooting every day. The direct push feature of exchange is not reliable any more. I was a Blackjack owner since day one and assumed the Samsung would just improve with the Epix. Man did I screw up. Bought the phone left the country for a few weeks and went past the 30 day return window. Now I am stuck with this piece of crap. At&t has refused to take it back despite the fact that I am a power user with a $500+ month bill and control 50 users on their service and have been a customer since 1992.

  46. Lee Harrison Says:

Oh forgot to mention that this piece of crap drops calls everytime I pick it up and locks up every other day.

  47. Koolness Says:

SAMSAM, i think you talking about the regular home screen, press on the clock and hold until options shows up. click on that and wha-la.

  48. Sean Says:

Does anyone know if you can auto set the Epix so it switches to vibrate mode during Meetings? Thanks.

  49. Alan Says:

UNCLE – I’ve finally given up. Had the phone for about 9 months. It could have been the best phone I’ve ever owned. Windows Mobile Professional, active sync to my office email, internet access, WiFi, etc. Has it all. The only problem is that it’s a heap of junk. Crashes daily. Drops calls religously. Mysterious sync issues/problems. I really wanted to love this phone, but I use it for business and I need it to work without fail. I’ve got a new iPhone 3GS on order.

  50. dai Says:

umm david, how do u lose the sound for the home screen once uve set the samsung today,,like wen I slide it,,it makes noise can I cut tht or not

  51. joey Says:

so i have tried to put the samsung today 2 on my epix but it doesnt show as an option in the today app and ideas ?

  52. stretch Says:

this homescreen works great! its really nice to be able to use the touch screen for easy navigation. can somebody please make a theme with black borders, or come up with a mod so that black can be chosen as a theme color? i have a nice jordan wallpaper bt the selection of border colors throw it off. thanx alot!
