Samsung Epix ID1 Update Overview

Samsung has released the ID1 Update, an update to the Samsung FOTA update, and so far it looks like a great so-so release.

The Samsung Epix ID1 Software Update fixes the following problems:

  • ”Slog Dump” Fix: On certain circumstances, the Samsung Epix may report a “Slog Dump” error message. This software provides an update to the network layer which prevents the problem from occurring.
  • Missed Email Audio Notifications: A previously released cab file for notifications is included in ID1. This enables the Samsung Epix to provide audible notifications alerts for your emails when the device enters an unattended power saving mode.
  • Outlook Notes SSP Support: The update contains the ability to synchronize the popular Notes feature available within Microsoft Outlook.
  • Ascending Ringtone: Ringtone behavior design was set to ascending/escalating volume during inbound call regardless of setting specified. With this update, the handset will act in accordance to the volume settings selected.

This Samsung Epix ID1 Update  also resolves (and doesn’t introduce) issues that the Samsung Epix FOTA Update introduced:

  • No freezing when making an outgoing calls.
  • Incoming calls are not incorrectly sent straight to voicemail.

Possible new issues

  • Some users report inability to use GPS with Google Maps, Garmin XT or MS Live Search – however many, including myself have no problems with this.
  • Some users report a decrease in battery life after using GPS. I have noticed this. After using GoogleMaps or Windows Live/Bing – your battery will be dead in a couple hours. If you do use GPS apps, i suggest restarting your Epix immediately after running them.
  • My ring sound for phone calls recently disappeared (it worked for several weeks after the update?) I assume a factory-reset would fix this.
  • I still get intermittent freezes, but less than before.

My Experience

I updated my Samsung Epix using this method about 1 week ago and my Samsung Epix is MUCH more stable now. I previously had daily lock-ups where I had to pop the battery out to reset my Epix .. now I have them less frequently.

A couple things to note:

  • I upgraded using a computer runinng Windows XP SP2.
  • I had to switch my Samsung Epix’s USB Connection back to ActiveSync (from Modem) before the Updater would connect to my phone.
  • My upgrade process froze at the very end during “Change USB OK“. I disconnected the USB cable and restarted my Samsung Epix and everything was fine.
    • It turns out if your Update fails during “Change USB OK”, the OS Update is applied, but the updates to the radio (the device in your phone that lets you communicate with AT&T’s network, not an AM/FM radio ;) ) didn’t happen. Pgens offers some suggestions on how to fix this in the comments.
    • I had some time today and performed the Samsung Epix ID1 Update again in hopes that the Change USB OK issue would be resolved.I ran the SGH-i907 updater per the instructions and this time the update ran to completion. If your updater halted at Change USB OK, i suggest closing all other applications including your web browser and re-running the ID1 updater.
    • I did some testing on my backup Epix, and strangely enough the update would fail at “Change USB OK” when I had Web browser running. If I closed every application running except for the Updater itself, it seemed to work.
  • Make sure to backup all information saved on your Samsung Epix before performing the update (data on your SIM or SD Card is safe).
  • My GPS is working correctly in Google Maps post update  - I haven’t tried any other applications the use GPS yet. Some users report they cannot use GPS post-update (See the comments).

Read through the comments – There are some people that feel this Update ruined their Epix. I think it made my Epix better (prior to the update it wholey unreliable).

If you perform the update and feel that the phone is unusable, the only way to revert back it so send the phone to Samsung Support (which can take up to 10 business days).

I have noticed a difference in performance for the better with the new patch and no more SLOG DUMPS. I cannot get the GPS to work with Garmin or Live Search. They used to work great before the patch. Are there any changes I should make to the phone settings?

  2. john owens Says:

So much for the FOTA patch!
Now we have to be a software engineer to install.
You would think that with the millions of phones they have made they would have gotten it right by now!
And I thought LG was bad!

  3. Jay Says:

I have already run into a problem when trying to install the update. Before running the MultiPatch.exe for Vista, your phone should be off and not connected to the PC. When you launch the EXE file, you are then to connect your phone via USB cable and then power it on, at which time the software should detect your phone. When I turn on the Epix as instructed, it fails to be detected and this occurs during power up. I have tried multiple times, to no avail. There is not documentation on the Samsung site (at least that I saw) that references this error. Any ideas?

    Thanks.

    P.S. Love the site.

  4. roc69x Says:

My GPS is no longer working after the ID1 update. I have not seen a patch or fix available for this. How can I resolve this problem?

  5. J.D. Says:

I’ve yet to install the update because I’ve heard it causes issues with the GPS. Many people are reporting that Google Maps and Live Search no longer can recognize the GPS after installing this. Has anyone else had or not had this problem and is anyone aware of a fix?

  6. Snickolaz Says:

I just installed this update last night. It’s working out great so far. I read about the GPS problems too that some people were having, for me I installed Google Maps and it opened up like a champ! It found my location while I was in my house like usual. I even tried it out with Garmin Mobile and that worked too. I figured it would be worth the risk to fix all the things it does.

  7. nygman Says:

I installed this yesterday, and had no issues with GPS. I Just made sure I setup my GPS correctly. I am using Com 1 on the Programs screen, and Com 9/4800baud on the Hardware screen, and I let windows manage my GPS. All seems to work without a hitch. The phone feels faster, although it’s probably due to the removal of all the crap I had on it. I have reinstalled most of the software I was using, and everything seems to work just fine.

I also went into the admin.exe and made WCDMA Priority.

All in all, this update seems to have fixed the ringer, notifications, and SLog Dump. I can even sync my notes now!!!

I would recomend it, but be sure to back up first, and follow ALL the instructions. Good luck all….

As a side note, I also installed a program called ReRemind in order to have some more flexibility with my notifications. Looked like a nice enhancement to try out…

  8. Pete Says:

So so strange. I have those exact settings: Com 1 on the Programs screen, and Com 9/4800baud on the Hardware screen, and I let windows manage my GPS… still no luck! I have definitely confirmed that this worked before the update as I used it all the time with Google Maps.

    Anyone else have some ideas?

  9. Chris Says:

I just installed, hoping that the Email Notification issue would have been fixed. It was not fixed. The problem I have is when I get an email, I want the light to flash until I check my email. That is not what happens. When I get an email, the light will flash purple for about 8 seconds. Then the flashing goes away. I tested the setting as both “no limit” and also “60 minutes”, but it doesent matter. Always flashes for ~8 seconds and then stays dark. Anyone have any ideas?

  10. KD Says:

I did the ID1 update last Thursday and so far have not had any issues with my phone. No SLOG dump messages and the GPS works just like it always has with Google Maps. 3G in my area is running noticably faster since the update. Had to go back in and adjust my ringer and handset volume back to where I like it using the tip on the site but overall I’m definately glad I did it.

  11. Ullal Says:

I installed the update and I notice that my battery does not last as long as it used too. Despite charging it all night it appears to notify me around 5:30 pm that my battery is low. Happened yesterday and today.

As others have reported, I had no problems with the GPS.

Another issue with this phone is that while I am on a call, it blocks the audio for me while an email is being received. This is a constant issue and has nothing to do with this update.

This would be the best phone around if Samsung would fix some of these issues.

  12. Mike Says:

Why is this freezing in the middle of the update???? At the Change UsbOK

  13. Michael Says:

I’ve installed the update. GPS works for me, but the GPS lock time has increased significantly – from 10-15 seconds to about a minute or two. Has anyone else noticed this?

Also, the update did not fix some other issues with the phone:
    * Periodically program buttons forget their settings, and need to be reconfigured.
    * Periodically the phone would wake up by itself, usually when smth changes in data connection state.

  14. GreyWater Says:

Everything went ok. Couldn’t get GPS satellites initially like after every hard reset I’ve done, but easily re-established using the usual workaround.

  15. jduk78 Says:

Does this update allow the LED to blink continuously until an email is read (or missed call is viewed)? I hate the fact that the Epix only blinks the LED a few times when an event occurs.

  16. Anthony Says:

If I install this update.. will I still be able to reinstall the updates such as using my phone as a wireless modem/software unlocking?

  17. nygman Says:

I have reinstalled all my software, and all work fine…

  18. WirelessGuru Says:

I installed the update about 5 days ago. No issues with install.

No issues with GPS, but device.exe CPU is high even after turning off GPS.
Using FlexMail for email I still do not receive email notifications. Not a problem with Pocket Outlook however.
LED still does not blink past 15 seconds. Solved that problem with a nifty app called RepeatingAlerts Pro at http://www.qorefunctions.com/ which let you customize alerts and repeating alerts with different LED colors, sounds and on-screen notifications.

  19. Bob Says:

Mine kept hanging at the “Change USB OK” too, so I just canceled. PDA update went fine, Phone update failed. Can’t see what harm it did, every thing seems to work as advertised. What was in the PHONE part of the update anyway?

  20. tkilla Says:

do you have to have the fota update in order to successfully install this new update? i tried to update but the device tool is saying it can’t find the pda and timed out…lemme know if you can help?

  21. GrayFox Says:

Installed the update, re-installed all the apps and hacks.

    Been about a week.

    1) GPS Works like a charm
    2) Interface seems snappier, and more responsive
    3) Everything else works fine.

I recommend all Epix owners to do this new update.

  22. panamatee Says:

i cant get pass the starting of the updates i did everything it said before running the updates, i click on the update program, enter the codes, plug the phone while its off and then turn it on, and the problems start there, it would say device found fail,,, close device timeout,( and it would say that about four times in a row. or sometime it do all the steps, i would have the phone off, plug it in my computer and turn it on then it would pop up saying windows has close this program, while the phone is powering back on, Has anyone experience that? i have windows vista premium 32 bit, i downloading the vista update program. i try calling samsung and they didnt know anything, i even try on a xp computer using the xp update, still nothing, can someone please help me with this update. it would help if someone give me some step by step about doing this or some troubleshooting , thanks in advance.

  23. Triv Says:

Install this and the phone work great..along with the hack for the audio controls..the epix has definately become alot better!

  24. Des Says:

Is the interface really faster and more responsive?

  25. WirelessGuru Says:

    Yes, interface is definitely faster.

  26. david Says:

Ullal, My batterylife has not changed after the ID1 thought I am having problems with GPS. Haven’t had a chance to figure the GPS issue out yet.

  27. nganto Says:

i updated to ID1 yesterday, but faced with several lockup that requires battery pulling. anybody have the same experience?

  28. Pete Says:

I totally see the device.exe spiking to 100% after loading Google Maps. Even when I close out the program it still spikes way too high. Have to restart and the device.exe goes down to around 11%.

Was on the phone with ATT for hours trying to get another device, but only got a exchange. GPS still doesn’t work.

  29. Snickolaz Says:

The update has been working good for me, but I’ve noticed that I can’t keep a good signal in my office at work anymore. It keeps dropping my 3G to E or just dropping all signal. So it’s using up a lot more battery because of that, anybody else having this kind of issue?

  30. pgens Says:

For those hanging on “Change USB OK” that happened to me too. What is happening is the PDA/OS update is written, but the radio update is not happening.

To resolve, I not only updated the Samsung modem drivers as the instructions said, but also ran the same driver update procedure on the USB Device Samsung entry and the Samsung Port entry as well. I then plugged the USB cable directly into the PC (instead of through a hub as it was) and the entire update went through.

  31. GrayFox Says:

i guess im lucky. im not having issues like some here are reporting.

  32. Anthony Says:

I can’t even get the damned install to start. My computer won’t detect the phone like the diagrams on their site show.

Anyone know if ATT stores will do these updates?

  33. Dave Says:

Mine is also hung on the “change USB ok” under the step 4 for phone. Guess I might start fresh and see if it can get past it on another try.

  34. david Says:

Anthony, I highly doubt AT&T stores will help you out. Some people tried bringing their Samsung Blackjack II’s into AT&T stores when they had trouble installing the Windows Mobile 6.1 Update for the Blackjack II, and the AT&T store couldn’t/wouldn’t help them. I think a large part of it is 1) the reps at the AT&T aren’t trained in performing the upgrade so they dont know how to do it and 2) they dont have available Windows computers they can use to perform the upgrade on.

  35. david Says:

pgens – When performing your update did you keep your phone set to “Modem” or “ActiveSync” under Settings > USB Connections. Also, Do you mean you manually updated USB Samsung Device and Samsung Port entry using the drivers in the Samsung Modem install zip?

When I updated I did a new install of the Samsung Epix Modem drivers and connected my Epix via USB straight to my computer.

  36. John Says:

    Install notes:
FYI, here are a couple things I discovered during my update back on the 20th…

    Upgrade Procedure Assessment:
I first tried installing this on my self built desktop which is using an AMD Dual Core Opteron processor. For some reason it would never see the modem drivers in the device manager windows even though I installed everything as instructed. If your machine cannot see the device as a modem it will NOT install. I decided to tried it on my Toshiba (Intel based) laptop. The device manager recognized the modem drivers just fine and I was able to connect the Epix and proceed with the upgrade. I never had one problem with the upgrade when I moved to the laptop. I did not get the hang up that some have reported here. I have no clue why the desktop would never recognize the modem drivers.

    Upgrade Results Assessment:
Overall, the uprade is working fine and I am very pleased with the results. I only got the SLOG Dump error a few times so did not do the FOTA upgrade due to other complaints.

I never expected the LED light to continue blinking even after this fix. Even though my previous BB for the most part kept the LED on, sometimes it didn’t so I’m in the habit of always checking my phone for missed messages, emails and calls. My phone is nearly glued to my hand so I hardly miss anything.

I am NOT having any problems with GPS being recongized. I have installed Google Maps, Live Maps and AT&T Navigator and they all work fine. I would RECOMMEND that for those having trouble with GPS, make sure you install AT&T Navigator and see if you can get it up and running. I have seen some posts where people have trouble with Google/Live finding GPS until the Navigator was up and running. I think that it’s possible that Navigator will get the GPS set up working and then the other apps may see it. Since I installed Navigator right away, this may have been a reason I never had any problems.

Here are a few anomalies I have seen since the upgrade but they have been so minor (to me) that I would NEVER give up this phone. Sure there are a few features that I would like to see but that’s true for every phone.

    Anomalies (since upgrade):
1 – a few times, when the phone has gone into standby, when I went to check the phone, I could not get it to wake up. I don’t know if the phone completely turned off or if I could not get it to wake up. I had to pull the battery to reboot the phone. I have the phone set to only wakeup when I press the power button so I don’t know if usine “any” key would make a difference. This has only happened at the most three times since I upgraded and I’m not concerned about it.

2 – a couple of times, someone has called but the phone never rang and they left a voice message and I never got a notification of the voice mail. When I rebooted the phone, I still never received a notification. It’s possible that this was a problem before the uprade but I only noticed it since the upgrade.

    Summary:
I love this phone and espcially love the optical pointer. If I’m not messaging or calling then I’m browsing the internet with it. To me it’s a hand computer in addition to a phone. With the recent upgrade I am very happy and will only change this phone if someone comes out with a better touch screen, non-slider qwerty keyboard phone like this one. I prefer this form factor over all the others. Sorry for the long post and hopefully it was helpful to others. Please feel free to contact me by email if you want.

Thanks to everyone’s posts and and and AWESOME thanks to David for creating this site…! I WILL be making a paypal donation for the cause….

  37. Nate Says:

I just got a refurbished Epix from AT&T this week.

Is there a way I can tell if my handset already has the ID1 update? I just got done customizing the phone and would hate to have to format it all again.

Is there somewhere in the about info that it lists the update installed or a certain version of the software?

    Thanks in advance!

  38. jduk78 Says:

    In response to WirelessGuru,

Thanks, I tried the trial for the repeating LED alerts. It seems to work great until my device enters power save (after 1 minute). Then when I “wake it up”, it blinks again. I haven’t installed the ID1 update yet. But when I do, will that allow the LED repeating alerts (from the website you referenced) fix this? I am asking because one of the fixes from the ID1 update includes email notifications when the device is asleep.

    Thanks!

  39. Chris Says:

I used to have the GPS problem, but now it is fine. I spent 30 mins outside for catching GPS signals. Eventually it began to work properly.
I’ve got some advice from here. http://www.careace.net/2009/05/22/review-samsung-epix-i907-id1-software-update/

  40. pgens Says:

David: It was on ActiveSync as that was the last setting in Samsung’s instructions, but it doesn’t matter as the OS is not loaded for the update… the updater can’t grab that setting.

And yes, I manually right-clicked on those other two Samsung hardware entries, went to Update Driver, and pointed them to the directory with the latest drivers. To get those two entries to show, I believe the Epix must be in the Modem USB mode.

  41. WirelessGuru Says:

    jduk78:

I didn’t have RepeatingAlerts Pro prior to the ID1 update. The LED continues to blink while in power save mode, and will stop blinking when I check the message (SMS or email).

  42. david Says:

    Nate – Yup!

    • To check the software version, enter the following information on the phone: *#1234#
    • Both the PDA and Phone versions should report pi907UCID1 and i907UCID1 respectively.
  43. david Says:

how do you know where the amsung_EPIX_Multipatch_ID1_For_XP.exe is located??

  44. david Says:

pgens – Gotcha.. I played around with the updater some more today.

I use a fresh Epix (no ID1 updates installed yet) and ran the updater which crashed at Change USB OK. I tried updating 4 times and everytime it would freeze at change USB OK. On my 6th try I closed Google Chrome (which was the only app I had running) and ran the updater and it successfully completed the install.

People who’s updater is freezing at the Change USB OK line: can you confirm that you have other programs running? (IE, Firefox, etc.)

People who have successfully FULLY updated: can you confirm that you did not have ANY other programs running on your computer while the updater was running?

  45. david Says:

david – its wherever you saved it to on your computer :) .. Try looking where your other downloaded files are saved. My Documents / Downloads is a likely candidate.

  46. Fibrolan Says:

    Hi

I just did the UD1 update and the GPS works great BUT the battery life Sucks. It showed 100% this morning and within 20min it was at 60% battery and it seems to be taking much longer to charge up the battery. Just to note I did not use the gps this morning.
Any new settings I am missing ?

  47. J.D. Says:

Ok, I decided to go ahead and install the update but without luck. I’m running Windows XP, but cannot get to update to recognize my phone. I start the program and enter the password and it tells me to turn my phone off and plug my phone in. I turn my phone on and the phone boots up as normal and the computer never recognizes it. I have tried both modem and active sync modes. I am not using an “official” samsung usb cord, that is the only thing I can think of causing the problem. I checked to make sure I have the correct modem drivers (which I do), but I’m going to try to reinstall them and see if that helps as well as use an official usb cord.

Has anyone else experienced this problem and have a suggestion?

  48. Fibrolan Says:

    Hi JD,

load the UD1 application and put in the 2 codes and let it sit waiting for the pda to be recognized. then turn on your phone and you will see on your screen on your computer that the start button will now be activated !!! NOW push the start button and let it go do its thing.

  49. Nick Says:

I had the same GPS problem for a week after my first ID1 update. I read and tried everything through all these Epix forums. Last Saturday, I flashed it again a second time, didn’t work after all the tricks I learned. Then I flashed it again the third time, it worked. I tested using the GPStest.exe and it got 5 satellites. Since then, it worked ok. So I guessed it must be some thing between the hardware and software that got loose. It took me 3 tries and I finally got the GPS back. I like this new ROM with better radio, faster resonse, no freeze, but … it a horrendous drain on the battery. It could not last a day for me.

    Nick

  50. Carson Says:

I got the “Change USB OK” problem until I removed my sim card…..forgot to do that early on even though it says so in the instructions…

  51. RockersChalk Says:

I’m having the exact same issue as J.D. above but am using Windows Vista. Unbelievable how good the Blackjack 2 was and how terrible this thing is… If anyone has advice please let us know.

  52. The Camel Says:

Well, I finally got the update to install on an XP machine after trying it on 4 different computers (2 vista, 2 XP). Everything seems to be working so far. My GPS works with Google Maps, but it takes a REALLY long time to find locate any satellites. I used to find 7 or more, now it only seems to locate 4 or 5

  53. Samsung User Says:

I was having the same problem with the update “locking up” when it got to Change USB OK. I tried changing com ports, baud speed, and number of other things. After reading pgens post about having to take the phone off of the usb hub it got me to thinking. I’m not using a hub but a 4 port PCI usb card (which essentially is a hub). I changed my phone back to all default com settings and plugged the phone into my usb port which is on the motherboard. To my surprise after running the update it completed just fine. So it seems that one of the requirements to running this update is that you have to have it plugged into a usb port that is on the motherboard. It worked for me. Let me know if anybody else has come to the same conclusion.

  54. nygman Says:

I have officially given up on the Epix… I love what the phone should be, but since the new update, I get less than 8 hours of use from my phone, before the battery dies completly. I also loose my ring sound occasionally, which is quite anoying. Between the new short battery life, and the ringer issue, I am done with this phone, and ordered a Fuse. It is a shame, because this could have been a great phone, I am just fed up of all the problems I am still having with it… Good luck to you all with your Epix. I hope you get a real fix soon

  55. eagle1 Says:

    Hi all,

Okay so I did the ID1 update on my Epix successfully. No errors. BUT, not even 24 hours after the update, my phone freeze.

The screen is off, I put it in my pocket. Once I take it out, the phone wont turn on.

This happened all the time before the update. 5-6 times a day and I had to take out the battery. I did the update hoping that this problem will be fixed, but IT WAS NOT.

anyway, does any of you having this issue? beside SlOG DUMP?

I did have slog dump before, but not now.

When I turned off the screen I was running IM with 3G. Dont know if that matters.

    Let me know.

    Thank you

    Tony

  56. Anthony Says:

I can’t even install this update. This is a damn shame. If I had the money, i’d be switching to an iPhone. Samsung isn’t helping at all, AT&T won’t send me a ‘new’ phone. Damn. Shame.

  57. Fred Futz Says:

    Hello folks.

After the update, the GPS didn’t work. I installed AT&T Navigator, and then my other GPS apps (Google Maps and Garmin XT) started working.

Interestingly, when you install AT&T Navigator V1.37, it actually installs something called AT&T Maps, with a button to upgrade to Navigator. Is it possible that AT&T now lets you use GPS for free, and only charges you if you upgrade to Navigator? As soon as I can find out, I’ll post it here. In any case, it might be worth a one month’s charge of $9.99 to get GPS working again.

  58. Russell Says:

I too had the “ChangeUSB OK” hang on a Vista x64 machine. I attempted to update the modem drivers on the modem / usb port / com port as suggested by another reader, and didn’t have any luck. I ended up flashing the device on an old XP SP2 box I had lying around and had no problems there.

  59. Fibrolan Says:

    Hi all,

I have been playing with the phone since I did the new update and here is my findings.

It seems that when you do a soft reset and you do not use the GPS the battery life will last the whole day and then some.

BUT if you use the GPS and even after you close it. It seems the phone still keeps something open in respect to the gps. it seems to drain the battery.

I have check the tasks and gps programs do not seem to be open.

    These are my findings.

    Fibrolan

  60. Andrea Says:

My phone just randomly started freezing up two days ago. Hard reset hasn’t helped. I can get it to work for 3 minutes at a time, at most. I can’t even get it to work long enough to change it to modem so that I can even dream of installing the update. I am about ready to throw the phone out the window.

  61. James Says:

Trying to install the ID1 update and the “program” has been sitting at “Step 1. Download EBOOT…downloading EBOOT” for about 30 mins as of writting this. Would somebody please tell me if something is wrong or it just takes a while. Also no progress on the download bar that should turn blue.

  62. GrayFox Says:

Update has been great thus far.

I did notice my overall battery life has decreased about 15% from before.

  63. iwouldbebob Says:

i can’t send files (photos, music, etc.) through bluetooth. also i can’t use mp3’s as ringtones anymore. is this just a setting i need to mess with or was this part of the update?

  64. jduk78 Says:

Can someone verify the mp3 ringtone problem mentioned above?

  65. LJK Says:

I’ve blue-toothed a file to my laptop successfully post ID-1.

Haven’t tried MP3 ringtones before or after the update, will post back if I do.

I have the increased battery drain issue. Actually I’ve seen the battery level go UP on the phone since the update without charging. I think it is recalculating and updating the batteru level more frequently, and if you stop a battery-draining process right after it has adjusted the level down, you can see it go back up again. Weird.

Getting an initial GPS satellite fix takes longer, then is pretty fast until it is power cycled.

MP3s as ringtones work fine here after the update. GPS and battery drain not so much. Any word of a fix?

  67. roberto Says:

SOLUTION to Update “ChangeUSB OK” Freeze

after several calls to the samusung help desk we figured out that the problem was that i was connecting the Epix to the PC through a USB hub. The help desk tech asked to connect the USB to the BACK OF THE PC (he was emphatic on this, and said any other connection might be problematic). After connecting to the on-board USB PC port, the UPDATE conluded fine.

Let me know if this works.

  68. Shawn Says:

The battery life on my Epix has decreased about 30% since the update. I don’t understand why this is not happening to everyone.

  69. w1gfd Says:

Has anyone else had difficulty getting this update to work under Vista, every time I try to get it to work I get a crash error from the program.

  70. Ken Says:

My update went smooth and I haven’t noticed a change in battery life. I have a very new phone, though, only 1 month since I got it (new).

  71. Spyder Says:

The best way to solve the “change USB ok” hanging error is to:

1.) plug the cable INTO THE COMPUTERS USB PORTS (no hubs or expansion bases)
2.) Put the phone on modem and plug it into the cable, it will re-install the modem drivers. then power down.
3.) do a hard reset (hold the “H” key and press power when samsung comes up keep holding h and follow on screen prompts)
4.) go through the normal setup procedure again, create a sync with windows mobile.
turn off the phone and start the updater app for ID1, type in the info and when it says the instructions follow them.
5.) turn on the phone and click the start button, it will successfully and fully this time, this fix is guranteed.

basically if you plug he cable into the PC instead of any hubs or expansions and then follow the directions samsung gave exactly, everything will work fine.

  72. Spyder Says:

Now, ive noticed a few things, theres talks on the forums about having a rev 03 and a rev 8, you can find these under the battery and see what you have. apparently people with rev 03 (like myself) are having GPS issues after the update. now i can remember on my blackjack 2 it used to take forever for the aGPS to kick in, till i rolled it up to windows mobile 6.1, then the gps worked perfect. so there must be some type of change in the registry causing these issues with the gps. can anyonereport having a rev 8 hardware with no gps issues?

  73. Spyder Says:

Also, has anyone figured anything out about the GPS issues. all the settings seem right, most users also report that a data connection must be present, either way they say it doesnt work at all or takes 15-20 mins to get a lock (like my bj2 used to before 6.1) if anyone can help me figure out the differences that were changed in the registry orany ideas to help the situation. i have both google maps and live search installed, neither can use the gps, and the device gets warm and drains battery rather quickly.

  74. Spyder Says:

if your gps isnt working and you attempt to start it, you will have to restart your phone, or device.exe will destroy your battery life

  75. TJ Says:

oh man is it true that you cant use MP3 as ringtones anymore?!?! I wouldn’t have installed this update if I knew that
    D:
i literally did it five minutes ago so I can’t comment on the battery life thing.

  76. Civic Says:

Has anyone had problems doing the update, my updater tool locked up at downloading PHONE…. had to unplug it, I have now HALF! ID1 and the other half the orig. ?????????????

  77. Civic Says:

I’m still trying to install this update. Eboot and PDA download and writing proceed fine. Only at step 4 do things hang. I see the message Downloading phone …

    ChangeUSB ok

The message in the blue status bar changes to Create Com 10 succeeded

And then I wait. and wait .. upto 15 minutes with no change.

Redoing the process with a different USB port nets the same result — PDA update completes but hangs on the phone update portion. I’ve used multiple USB ports with similar results. Driers have been uninstalled and reinstalled and are of the recommended release.

  78. Spyder Says:

Civic, look above, hard reset our phone witht he partial update, then plug the cable diectly into the system and follow the instructions to update all over again, this will work, you have to reinstall the modem drivers on the new rom half the update will go right through after., hopefully another one comes soon to fix the GPS

  79. MJK Says:

I too am having the GPS issue with a 0.3 rev device after installing the update. The GPS will work occasionally, sometimes starting up right away, while other times taking 10-15 minutes to lock on to a signal. I did the update because I REALLY needed the notes sync feature out of Outlook, but now I’m not so glad I did, since I lost the ability to use the GPS. I can’t even return the thing under warranty…the “water indicator” on my Epix turned red – even though it’s never physically been wet – must have been too much humidity or something.

  80. jduk78 Says:

With the battery life issues many of you are having, I’ve decided not to install the update. I can without email sound notifications. Battery life isn’t that great as it is, I have to charge every 1-2 days.

  81. Jam Says:

Samsung User you’re awesome. Never even thought about the single usb port on my laptop being a hub. Changed usb ports ran like a dream.

  82. jonchance Says:

  83. TA Says:

I’ve been unable to use the Internet Sharing feature to share my phone’s internet connection w/my laptop since the upgrade. Anyone else had trouble with this?

    -TA

  84. TA Says:

Sorry, please disregard my previous message on Internet Sharing. I had forgotten that that feature required a hack from this site that needed to be reinstalled after the update. All is working well after reinstallation.

    -TA

  85. Sixbee Says:

I had the GPS problem as well but reinstalled the update and then the GPS started working.

  86. Matt Says:

Don’t install this patch. After installing, my Epix frequently crashes and my GPS doesn’t work. This is the last Samsung phone I’ll ever buy. The author of this web site should take down his recommendation to install this patch.

  87. beachdog Says:

Finally recieved permission from corporate IT to run the update yesterday. discovered a couple of issues with getting the update to run on XP with Trend Micro Internet Security 2009. It’s not enough to just stop the firewall and virus protection – the entire application has to be shut down or the updater will not find the phone at start up.

Also, the usb cable had to be connected to the port on the rear of the computer. The front panel convenience ports are not good enough.

Comment on the Samsung directions and everyone’s posting. When referring to turning the phone on and off, it doesn’t just mean turning the screen on and off; it means soft reboot at a minimum. Soft reboot worked for me in getting the updater to find the device and allow everyhting to run to completion.

Now that it is installed, it’s too soon for me to report a lot, but here’s the bad stuff right out of the chute:
    1. GPS – dead, nada, caput. Previously, installed the application unlocker from this site and GPS Proxy from SourceForge site in order to get TomTom working. Also used Google Maps with GPS very successfully in the past, now nothing.

    2. Tried to install the ATT Navigator as others have found some luck in kick starting the GPS device but after download, install and reboot, it just hangs on program startup.

    3. Phone radio reception still bounces continually between E and G with signal strength also continually jumping from no signal to 3 bars. Was hoping that the fix for the SLOG dump was going to stabilize the radio since that was the claimed cause of the SLOG dumps.

    Small good news:
    1. When connected via wifi, the top tested bandwidth is now almost 1.9mbs for 1MB file(about equal to the Palm 750 that the Epix replaced). Prior to this upgrade the highest noted bandwidth test was about 1.4mbs.

Has anyone found a good tutorial on getting the GPS back up and running?

  88. pgens Says:

I don’t think there is any tutorial at all for getting GPS back up, I wish there was some report of a way to do it.

As much as I like having Outlook Notes sync working again, I regret doing the upgrade and look forward to the day someone finds a way to revert back, if that day ever comes. It’s a notes vs GPS choice with this upgrade, and I miss my Garmin navigation greatly.

  89. Hanam Says:

Has anyone tried this with window 7 yet?

  90. lmcid Says:

The only way I have been able to get the GPS (temporarily) working with Garmin was by running ATT Maps and getting a lock on the GPS signal. However, after I soft reset the GPS won’t lock for Garmin or Google Maps.

I search daily to see if someone comes up with a solution to getting the GPS back up… any help would be appreciated by many.

  91. J.D. Says:

    beachdog and pgens -

Have you tried turning on Navigator and letting it sit for 30 minutes to try to pick up gps? I know that is incredibly inconvenient, but I’ve heard that has worked for some people, and after that the gps signal is picked up right away.

Personally I had no issues whatsoever with gps after I updated. I didn’t have a slog dump issue either, so perhaps I just got lucky with my epix.

  92. M.S. Says:

Update was painful, but after connecting directly to USB 2.0 on CPU it went all the way through. Now GPS is broken as with so many others… and I called Samsung support & was told this issue has been reported by many and escallated and keep checking their website for an update (though no promise there will be one). So, the phone is crippled following a patch they said to install and where you cannot go back to the original firmware. I will be entering any and all complaints that I can w/Better Business Bureau etc.

  93. B.N. Says:

I think I may have finally got my GPS working again with Google Maps and Garmin XT for the first time since updating to ID1 several weeks ago. Here’s what I did. Settings –> System –> External GPS. Programs Tab I changed to COM1 is was set to GPD1. Hardware tab was already set to COM9 with a Baud rate of 4800. Access tab has the Manage GPS automatically box checked.

In Google Maps I went to Options –> GPS Settings and selected Set Manually with COM1 and 4800 baud.

In Garmin I clicked on the GPS signal strength bars and disabled the GPS Intermediate Driver. I chose Use Serial GPS with COM1 and clicked enable.

I’ve restarted the phone several times and launched either Google Maps or Garmin. Each time they’ve acquired a GPS signal in less than minute just like it used to. Hopefully it keeps working.

  94. Christian Says:

i keep on getting stuck on the changeUSB ok and ive tried everything that was posted above and the bar at the top stops on creating com6 succeed….i was just wondering if theres anything else that could fix this

  95. beachdog Says:

J.D. – I am able to get Google Maps to pick up sats now after about 5 minutes. Before 1D1, it took 10 seconds.

I left the phone out on the patio with ATT Navigator running and it did have sats when I came back but it didn’t do anything to get reception any quicker. Still taking 5 minutes for Google and GPS Proxy which I use to feed TomTom cannot lock any sats no matter how long I leave it running.

I think that the GPS Proxy problem might be related to the application unlocker. Maybe that isn’t working after 1D1.

Biggest problem now is battery life. I went from 2-3 days without charging before 1D1, now, I charge it all night, take it off of charger at 7 AM and it’s dead by 4 PM with lisght usage.

Class action lawsuit anyone? No wonder ATT put up the URL on their forum and made the statement that the upgrade is not supported.

  96. CLB Says:

I just bought the Epix and was wondering if I need to install this update, or does it come installed in the new phones already? (since the update has already been out for a month) Is there any way to tell? Thanks.

  97. J.W. Says:

I loaded the update like many of you and lost my internal GPS. The reception may or may not have been impacted (similar thought on battery life). I was about ready to give up then decided to perform a Hard Reset, actually two Hard Resets consecutively. I then reloaded the RealVGA and the GPS Apps first, followed by everything else.

    Now for the results:
    1. GPS works again (2-5 minutes to acquire from a cold start, 10 seconds max from a warm start)
    2. GPS cold start is noticeably faster if restarting from where you last used the app (hence the 5 minutes above)
    3. Signal strength appears to be as good as before the update
    4. Battery life is unchanged from before the update, EXCEPT
    5. Battery life using the internal GPS chip sucks

    Hope this helps.

  98. pgens Says:

On GPS, if I let it sit for that long it may work, but even if you bail out of GPS go to task manager and check processes… “device.exe” is blown up to 70% or so, and that is contributing to battery drain. If I do try GPS, I always soft reset to clear out that problem.

Someone in HoFo said they read on the AT&T forums that Samsung is aware of the problem and is generating a fix and I hope that is 1) true and 2) going to be released very soon.

  99. J.D. Says:

I am starting to experience the same gps problems. (Taking a few minutes to pick up gps and battery drain until I soft reset). It was very disappointing, especially considering it didn’t happen the first day or so. I hope the update is true as well.

    Third time’s a charm?

At this point I kinda wish I hadn’t done the update. I never had Slog Dump and a hack to fix most of the other problems. It was the supposed increased internet speed that got me to do it at all.

  100. sjborch Says:

I had the same changeUSB ok hang, but updating both drivers to 4.40.7 and plugging in to the motherboard USB port on the back solved the phone update portion. I’m glad I found this site on a search and even more glad that pgens saved my bacon with his post.

  101. Rick Says:

Battery Life is crap. I don’t get 1/2 a day now. Have to remember all the time to soft reset when I am out away from a charger. Very disappointing.

  102. pgens Says:

I get two days out of it as long as I don’t use GPS, and that’s with periodic data usage. That said, I always turn my phone off overnight. I do that with all phones though, not just with the Epix after the update.

  103. nygman Says:

I got less than 8 hours of use out of the battery after the “Upgrade” I have since ditched the Epix for a Fuze. So sad, as I ireally liked the Epix, but with all the issues (GPS, Battery, Sound going away, lack of email notificatins) I gave up on it, and got myself an HTC Fuze, which fixed all my problems. I suggest you all complain to AT&T about the phone and see if they will allow you to switch to a Fuze. I insisted on it, ans while it cost me a few bucks, it was well worth it! Good luck if you keep it

  104. LostSoul3471 Says:

Short end of it, nygman and anyone else with retarded battery life, I’ll bet you money that you touched a GPS app at some point before noticing the battery drain. GPS and battery life have ALWAYS been an issue. The issue before is that when you closed the app using GPS the process running the hardware closed with it. I’ve got the same issue as others where GPS doesn’t work and when trying it, it spikes the processor load almost to the point of making the device unusable. Also exiting the app doesn’t close the GPS usage or reduce the CPU load. A soft or hard(power off) reboot is the ONLY way of clearing it. You may also notice the back of the phone getting warm too–attributed to high CPU load. Yes, I can confirm that my phone is a REV0.3 so this may be part of the issue.

Also noticed some odd lock-ups that other are getting where the phone doesn’t come out of power-save and only comes back after pulling the battery. I’ve had this issue from before the patch. My fiance also has an Epix and never had any issues until she asked me to switch the radio from auto to WCDMA(3G) to fix the battery life issue when going out to the sketchy parts of town where it likes to ping-pong between 3G and Edge. Trying auto again to see if the lockups persist.

I want my GPS back however–hope they don’t take another 6mos to address this.

  107. Spyder Says:

and also this guy claims to have fixed the gps issue with a new cooked rom update, im sceptical on trying this however… but it supposedly fixes the gps issues and incorporates some things in the fixes. check it out here.

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=518082&page=5

  108. J.D. Says:

Spyder – Please let us know how it works for you. Good find on your part if it does.

  109. Spyder Says:

well using the first fix for gps, actually doesnt fix anything, GPS will fail to initialize, im keeoing it this way for now because the good thing about it is device.exe wont spike anymore. but im weary to try the cooked rom because if i brick this im screwed, anyone else give this a shot?

  110. Spyder Says:

not only brick it, but it may not allow official updates after in which case the support for this phone community wise isnt great besides this site.

  111. Spyder Says:

also im curious, if someone did the update, and it updated the phone/pda part and not the radio, if they are having nay issues with GPS in that half update state? they obviously changed the drivers for the GPS and some phones hardware support it and others cant deal with it, this is such a stupid issue to have that will take 6 months fo them to release an update, they could release and ID2 witht he old drivers in for now while they figure somethin out. agreed?

  112. pgens Says:

    >not only brick it, but it may not allow official updates

I’m not saying this particular update is safe, but in the few years I have been applying cooked ROMs to WinMo devices I have yet to run into a situation where an official update did not install. If worried, one could always flash back to the ID1 release and then flash the updated release.

  113. spyder Says:

pgens the grand prix program modifies the phone bootloader. that’s why I was concerned. if you say it’ll be cool then I hope its ok. are you gonna give this a shot? or am I gonna have to pop the cherry?

  114. pgens Says:

I have not yet used GrandPrix, but other devices (HTC Touch in particular) had the bootloader changed.

I’m not doing it until someone else does lol. In fact I may wait for a few people to give feedback on how it is working. HAd I done that with ID1 I wouldn’t be regretting applying it :)

  115. spyder Says:

augh…I may try it… im havin a personal battle with it. well see when I get home how I feel about it if I can roll back to id1 I might not be as worried. anyone else try this rom out let me know. I wish the alkoholik or other user who was posting there would post here. someone give me some feedback?

  116. Spyder Says:

well tried the cooked rom last night, its having issues being flashed to the device (why wouldnt it) i will be trying again later today when i get some time. the phone is still in working order so it cant be half bad.

  117. pgens Says:

Reports are that while this cooked ROM may be good for other reasons, it does not fix the GPS issue. One thing I did learn on XDA was you can go into the Wireless Manager and turn off then turn back on “Phone” to clear out device.exe’s resource spike, as opposed to having to reboot the phone.

  118. Spyder Says:

well I give up I can’t even flash it fully if the prgram even recognizes the phone. either granprix sucks or its just bunk. either way I flashed official id1 and am awaiting gps functionality officially unless somethin else big comes up.

  119. Dusty Says:

Hey, Im purchasing the Epix this week and am new to app downloading. In order to download googlemaps and garmin, do I need to do the CAB thing? or can I download it right onto my phone? Also, do I have to have a micro sd card, or does it not matter?

  120. Deeken Says:

People, I DO NOT RECOMMEND THAT YOU INSTALL THIS!!

    1. It will screw up your GPS.
    2. It will drain your battery 20-50% more than before the update.
    3. When charging your phone you will occasionally get an error stating that the batter is hot and charging is disabled.
    4. It will remove all your settings, software, contacts, etc leaving you with a blank phone. You will spend hours/days reinstalling everything and configuring it the way you had it originally.
    5. The software update is apparently not supported by AT&T.

I personally believe that it was very careless and irresponsible or the site admin (David) to recommend this patch without reading all the negative reviews. I will send him an email personally asking him to change his comments regarding this patch. If you go to AT&T’s forums regarding this phone and this update you will not see many good comments regarding this patch. A lot of people are frustrated, disappointed and feel that have been shafted by Samsung for creating such a poorly built patch. I have installed this update/patch and I wish I could revert my phone back to the way it was.

  121. Rick Says:

Deeken – A little harsh on David there….. User beware is what is called for here. This site has had some great posts and such.

  122. pgens Says:

Only #1 is confirmed. #2 happens if you run GPS and do not turn Phone off/on in Wireless Manager or soft reboot the phone. I have never seen #3 reported, that’s the first time. #4 happens with all ROM updates. #5 is preposterous because new phones ship with ID1.

I understand your frustration with problems with updates, but blaming the guy who posted its availability and a way for users to give comments isn’t a way to solve it. There are over 100 posts with user experiences with this update here… if people deciding whether or not to install it don’t read through the comments then, well, you get what you prepped for.

  123. Deeken Says:

Didn’t mean to take out my frustration on David nor am I blaming him. I truly appreciate his efforts, time, dedication and this wonderful site he’s brought us. If it weren’t for this site I would not have enjoyed my Epix as much.
All I would have liked is just a little more caution on this patch before I installed it.

  124. bamitsbeatrice Says:

so my phone was doing this, and i called att, and said it kept messing up even after hard reset.
    they sent me a replacement.
and i’m pretty sure the new samsung epix’s are already fixed and updated.
cause when i opened it today, i didnt have to download anything for the accending ringtone.
and the text/email blinker thing is already on the phone too.
there are definitely somethings that are different then my old one.

so i suggest everyone to just try to get a replacement phone,
basically they will tell you to hard reset, and tell you to call back if its still messing up.
my phone was fine, but i just wanted a new one so i called and said its still messing up,
and i think they fixed all the kinks, and updated the new phones.
now my phone is working great :)

  125. J.D. Says:

Deeken – I’ve never heard of the the charging issue before either. Sounds like you might have a more serious issue at hand. If you’re looking to replace the Epix, perhaps you can use that to your advantage.

I read somewhere that Samsung has acknowledged the GPS issue and is working on a fix. I can only hope that is true.

  126. Deeken Says:

The Charging issue happened to me on Wednesday while I was on the road driving. First off, it took about 20 minutes of me waiting in the parking lot to get a GPS signal. I had Garmin GPS running while my phone was plugged in. After 25-30 minutes into my drive I noticed an error message on my screen that read something like this “Battery is too hot, charging has been disabled”. I’ve never, ever seen that message before and I’ve always been using the same OEM charger. So its not the phone that’s doing this, its the software.
And the issue with the GPS is getting worse. Yesterday I could not get the GPS to work while I was sitting by a window in my apartment. So I took a 20 minute walk around my neighborhood and I still couldn’t get a signal. I used Garmin and google maps. No GPS signal on either.
Then I read the comments above that if you try AT&T Navigator then your GS might work so I gave that a go. I downloaded the latest AT&T Navigator, installed it and registered it. It seemed to have picked up a signal after a few minutes. After I was able to connect with AT&T Navigator I exited that program and tried Garmin and wouldn’t you know it, Garmin was able to pick up a GPS signal. Google maps was also.
I did a soft reset of the phone and tried Garmin again but once again I was unable to find a signal. So, it appears that the GPS will work with the AT&T proprietary software but not with Garmin or Google maps. If I have to start AT&T Navigator or leave my phone outside for 20 minutes to pick up a signal is just ridiculous.

One of the major reasons why I bought this phone over the Iphone or Fuze because of its size, battery life and excellent GPS. As of this patch the 2 of the 3 major reasons I bought this phone are now gone. I’ve installed the update twice, and applied 2 hard resets. I love this phone and want to keep it, I don’t want another phone.. I just wish I didn’t apply this patch.

  127. lmcid Says:

“So its not the phone that’s doing this, its the software.”

Yes and no… device.exe is going in a loop which loads up the CPU and SC all releasing heat up inside the phone. The extra power requirements heats up the battery. Add the heat from being next to a window in the middle of summer and that from simultaneous charging the battery and you are probably very close to having a fried EPIX.

Whatever software component that is throwing you that warning is probably one of the things actually working properly inside the EPIX.

  128. Rick Says:

Deeken – None of us do…ergo the 104 comments about a patch!!!!

  129. pgens Says:

Deeken – I know about this patch regret… that’s why I posted my regrets two weeks ago :)

  130. C10 250 Says:

I really hope something is done by samsung to correct these problems. I tried the thing with AT&T navigator but I got the same results as Deeken. But I think I’ve found one work around until an update is released. I found this program buried in my CABs folder called GPStoday. I installed it a couple days ago to see if it would work with my Epix’s GPS and the results were better than I expected. It locked on to 4 GPS satellites in about 15 seconds and was locked on to 8 in about 30. I haven’t gotten a lock like that since I installed ID1. From there I tried my google maps and it worked perfectly. I even locked on to 9 satellites! I’ve never had nine, even before ID1.

Now I will say, did not like this plugin before because I experienced ill effects on my battery life when I first installed it and I was initially experiencing the same problem this time. But after changing the settings, primarily the Quickfix timer from “AUTO” to “OFF” my battery life seems normal.

The great part is unlike the AT&T Navigator is it seem to fix the GPS even if it’s not running. It doesn’t even have to be on your today screen, just installed on your phone (all benefits were gone when I uninsalled it).

Found the developer’s website geoterrestrial.com and downloaded the updated version and it works just as well. My only complaint is the new version requires you to sign up for their “geogroups” social network to install the plugin. I still have the old version cab that I can email to anyone who wants it. The only problem with the is the maps don’t load properly which isn’t a problem for those who only want to use it to fix their GPS.

Now I’m only reporting to everyone something that has worked well for me. For all I know it could be a fluke. I look forward to feed back to see if it works for anything else. And I really hope all you hackers out there can figure out what GPStoday changes and possibly create a patch to fix the problem all together.

  131. Ravi Pinjala Says:

I had the “Change USB” hang as well – closing all programs didn’t fix it, but restarting the computer did. YMMV.

  132. Jeffrey Van Deventer Says:

Ok, I completed the upgrade successfully. My GPS seems to be fine. Battery is clearly not as good as it originally was, but I deal with that. What I cannot deal with is the system volume just cutting off for no reason. I hear a soft pop and I look at the phone, and then I see the system volume set to 0. I called Samsung support and got no where. I have now moved back to my 8525 because I cannot trust the phone to cause me to miss a call.

  133. smartassphone Says:

From David’s list of fixes I am AMAZED that no one has commented on one of the best fixes in the package. Not only did Outlook Notes not sync with a desktop PC, ActiveSync file syncing was completely broken. The “Synchronized File Folder” that ActiveSync builds for Windows Mobil Devices was USELESS with the EPIX. Files in the My Documents folder on the Epix would sync to PC, but only in that direction. Files placed in the folder on the PC would NOT sync to the phone. I really missed being able to just dump files in there and have them transfer within to my phone, usually within half a minute. This was the first Windows Mobil Device I ever had that would not do this. WITH THIS UPDATE FILE TRANSFERS WORK PERFECTLY! – I just tested the crap out of it, and it works. Just shows what a low we have reached when I am JUMPING FOR JOY, just because something WORKS CORRECTLY. These are dark days indeed. Ahhh, for the simpler times. Bring back my BlackJack II!

Looks lie they may be replacing this dud of a phone soon…. Although after my Epix experiences, I will never again own a Samsung. Glad I swapped it out for a Fuze!

  135. smartassphone Says:

Also – My battery life seems much IMPROVED, and the reason is obvious. Pre-update, my screen would come on constantly, seems like whenever it received a message, mail, or a host of other functions, the screen would toggle on. I was contantly forcing it dark with a quick press of power switch, at least I WAS until it started locking up in power save mode. Doh! My power management is VASTLY improved, at least in terms of when idle (I have stopped usng the phone a lot lately- I have some other projects taking up time. But for idle power saving? It went from a 1 out of 10 points to a 7 or 8 out of 10. Heck, in idle mode it is lasting 2 + DAYS, where I would never get over a day before. Anyone else seeing similar results, or is it just me? Of course I bet that most folks in this forum don’t LET the phone sit idle much!!

  136. J.D. Says:

smartassphone – As far as the battery, the issue lies in the GPS. I’m guessing that is a feature you don’t use, at least you didn’t mention. Assuming I don’t mess with the GPS at all I would say I haven’t noticed much of a difference in battery life. Although even after the update the screen will randomly turn on for no apparent reason.

  137. Mark Says:

I was having some major issues with my Epix to a point that I had to pull the battery several times a day; phone powering off for unknown reasons; slow performance at times, etc. This patch requires following the directions exactly as they appear. Once I was done, my Epix has been working without a hitch for the past three days straight without a battery removal. Of course, is it due to the patch or the Hard Reset or both? Bear in mind I don’t have much third party apps running on it now. I did not reinstall SPB Mobile shell 3.0 only SPB Phone Suite 1.3 (actually installed Beta 1.3.1 to resolve icon issue on Today screen). I’m finding that the hype of trying to turn my Epix into an iPhone-like device is ridiculous. I’m finding stuff quicker on my Epix using usual Windows Mobile interface. Go figure. (Note: I did have an issue with ActiveSync USB connection after the patch but merely required a reboot of the phone and my PC) I do like the fact that they fixed the Outlook Notes sync, however, kind of sucks since I moved all my Outlook Notes to Onenote to sync with my Epix before this patch.

  138. Deniska Says:

This update has been a major problem for me. Ever since I applied it, two things happened: the battery life decreased significantly, and the GPS lock takes a lot longer to acquire. The battery life is inconsistent and has been getting progressively worse. My battery now dies completely anywhere between noon and 4pm — that’s after charging overnight and unplugging at 7am. Really terrible. And since there are no cooked ROMs for our phone and the original ROM is not available, there is no recourse. Luckily my phone is under warranty so I am getting it replaced, but what a drag…

  139. J.D. Says:

Deniska – In most cases the battery life is directly connected to the GPS. If you turn you GPS on, you MUST do a soft-reset on your phone. For some reason the GPS causes a spike in the device.exe process and a soft-reset will put it back at a normal level. Give that a try and see if your battery does better.

  140. Deeken Says:

OK folks my time with my Epix has run out. I have asked for 3 replacement Epix ever since I applied this update and all have the same issue. The GPS and battery issue is too much for me and now I have requested a change of phone. I will going with the Fuze from now on. I look at this site as the beginning and the end.
I got a lot out of my phone from this site but the ID1 update is what killed my phone. I blame myself for the mistake of trusting the site and David’s high recommendation of his patch. I was foolish and made a mistake. Now, the phone I loved is just a shell of it’s former self.
Never the less the Point here is DO NOT INSTALL THE ID1 UPDATE and read the comments before you do any major updates to your phone. Don’t do what I and many other did and trust a site. Research it and do our homework before you do any changes to your phone.

  141. pgens Says:

Don’t do what I and many other did and trust a site. Research it and do our homework before you do any changes to your phone.

And read what everyone had already posted before making a decision. I keep seeing new posts listing surprise at problems after we had explained them already. “Don’t trust the site” isn’t great advice when you didn’t trust the advice to NOT install it that was here before you did it.

pgens: 06-24-2009: “I regret doing the upgrade and look forward to the day someone finds a way to revert back, if that day ever comes. ”

Your first post here: 07-09-2009. You had all the info you needed on this site to warn you against applying this update.

  142. jduk Says:

I didn’t install this update, but all the other issues with the Epix makes me wish I went with something else. Has AT&T recognized these problems (email notification, ascending ring, etc.)? Are they willing to replace your phone with something else (not another Epix) at no charge?

I am guessing no (if it’s past the 30 days or whatever the policy is), but just thought I’d ask.

  143. Drew Says:

I installed the ID1 update and it screwed up my GPS. It used to work smoothly. Now it never locks on. I called ATT and they are sending me a replacement. Was this a wise decision? Does having the GPS work outweigh the benefits of the ID1 update?

  144. nygman Says:

I found the GPS did work, just took a Looooooooooonnnnnnnnngggggggg time to get a lock… As for a new phone, it will have ID1 on it, and the same issues. Should talk to AT&T about switching to something else, if you want all the features to work. I went with the fuze. Cost me an extra $100 after rebates, but now I am hapy. Good luck all you Epix owners

  145. Drew Says:

so the replacement will have the ID1 update on it?

  146. J.D. Says:

    Drew – Most likely.

  147. JK Says:

Installed this ‘patch’ one week ago on my rev. 3. No issues w/ installation, and i won’t recap the laundry list of issues everyone here already knows about – GPS, etc.

One new anomaly I have encountered is the COMPLETE loss of SMS. Texts i send are not received, and texts sent to me do not get delivered. No notifications. However, Email sync w/ my Gmail account experiences no issues, and I receive my notifications for email. Calling also appears to function properly so far. I have been testing this tirelessly and not a single message has gotten through. Numerous soft resets have done nothing, and I have not attempted a hard reset. Nor have I had the time or fortitude to deal w/ phone support.

Shot in the dark, but has anyone else encountered this? Any suggestions for resolution?

  148. MJS Says:

I also installed ID1 to resolve the Email notification issues (that was still intermittent after installing earlier patch for this). It does appear to have fixed the Email notification, however it did break my GPS where I was able to use both Google Maps and with GPSPROXY I was able to use TomTom 6 without the additional AT&T charges for GPS. I called their tech support twice to complain, was told this is a know issue and “we are working on it so please keep checking our website periodically for a possible fix”. This really stinks, so now I’m searching for an address to send a letter to Samsung requesting a replacement phone with the old firmware. I would rather have intermittent email notification than no GPS….

  149. beachdog Says:

MJS – I also used to use GPSproxy to drive TomTom Navigator 6; very successfully I might add. Now, the Epix is useless as a GPS. Just for laughs, I hold the Epix right next to my old HP Ipaq phone to test sat capture. I don’t have any cellular service on the HP – it doesn’t even have a SIM card anymore. I start GPS proxy on both. The HP has 8 sats locked in under 10 seconds AND with a strong enough signal to support TomTom. After 5 minutes, the EPIX has only found 5 sats and the signal is so weak that TomTom won’t accept the input. Next, I walk with both units about 25 feet from the original position. The HP is constantly updating the lat/lon. The EPIX looses the sats and is trying to find sats again. Pitiful.

I only have a few more months to go before I can get my next phone from ATT so for now, I will go back to carrying a second device as a GPS. Samsung has lost me as a future customer. Their dismal support for this $300 phone will prevent me from purhasing ANY Samsung product ever in the future.

  150. Gooders Says:

Installed it. Was a bit of hassle to get it all working, numerous reboots and very important USB goes straight into PC direct. but it worked and now i’m four days in with no crashes – just one reboot when i lost volume. Beats taking the battery out every 10 hours.

  151. jduk Says:

Does AT&T or Samsung care about these issues? Add me to the list of people who will never get a Samsung again. I didn’t install the update, but I still would like email notifications to work! That is not too much to ask.

  152. astokie Says:

I’ve downloaded and extracted the ID1 patch file but cant get it to launch. Everytime I try to open it gives me a file open failed message? I’ve tried it on 2 different comps running WinXP Pro SP3 and get the same message. Thanks for the help.

  153. pgens Says:

Take it as a sign :) Seriously, don’t install it if you use GPS apps. If you don’t and don’t care about them, then continue your effort.

I don’t know why it isn’t launching… maybe try downloading it again? I haven’t seen that mentioned as a problem so far in the thread.

  154. opinari Says:

I’d agree with pgens. Everything is better after the update except for the gps. Takes forever to lock (google times out), but navigator gets a lock after 10min. The problem is that it only gets half as many satellites as last time and the battery just disappears afterwards if I don’t do a soft reset.

I rarely use gps so it’s not a problem for me, but I also never had the slog dumps. If I had to do it again, I’d might just choose the e-mail notification patch and live with the ascending ring tone :D .

  155. sjborch Says:

The problem with this patch is that there’s plenty of blame to go around for the GPS problem after update. Is it Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 6.1, or Samsung’s Epix, or AT&T? Hopefully there will be a patch for the patch, if it’s even possible. I’m often greeted with several Notification Errors every time I wake up the phone: Cannot execute repilog.exe, Cannot execute Tskschedule.exe and sometimes clocknote.exe (or something similar). I had the GPS working briefly on a trip, but it won’t work now.

  156. pgens Says:

People on xda-developers seem to think it’s the radio update that is causing the problem. In other words if you ran the update but the radio didn’t update you’d theoretically be okay with GPS. No one has provided a way to flash the radio to a working version though.

  157. Dee Pickus Says:

I just tried the update and I also am getting the file open failedl. Retry again message right after I start the Samsung_EPIX_Multipatch_ID1_For_XP.exe. I’m not understanding why you have to set it to be a modem, is there some way something is communicated over the air because I get no service in my office where my computer is. Would that be the problem? Anyone have any ideas. I have 7 Epix phones that all have the freezing, overheating, battery draining problems.

  158. Richard Says:

    Hey guys,

There seems to be a lot of negativity about this update, so I figured I’d throw in some positive feedback about the update. Before the update, my phone would do the SLOG Dump error, and it would just decide that there was full signal wherever I went when in fact it had none. Also the sound would sporadically decide not to work either. This and my summer-time boredom caused me to update the thing, and I don’t regret it at all.

Since the update all of these issues have been fixed. My gps (iGO8) didn’t work at first, but changing the External GPS settings to COM1, COM9, 4800Baud fixed that problem right up (the obvious basic setup sometimes escapes us). The battery life is a tiny bit worse, but the phone signal is much better and it seems to refresh more often (possible cause for battery life decrease).

I love this phone and everything it can do…even though it can’t make me a sandwich (damn modern technology, leaving out the good stuff)…

FYI: S2U2 runs soo much better because of this update. Before it would show the home screen, then flash to the S2U2 screen. Or I would have to unlock it 2 or 3 times for it to actually unlock!

I feel bad for all of the people having issues with this update, but after reading some of these tips about how to go about running the installer and the Change USB tips; everything worked fine on my first shot.

  159. Drew Says:

I updated my epix without any troubles. My problems all came after the update. My phone would freeze 4 or 5 times a day and pretty much anytime i would charge it. I took the phone to an AT&T service store and exchanged it through the warranty. The phone they sent me did the exact same thing and it already had been updated when i got it. So I went back to the store again and had another one sent to me and just got it today. Hopefully this one will be better.

  160. Mark Says:

It’s official, after the ID1 patch, my GPS does not work in Google Maps and Navigator. What a shame! However, my phone is more stable that before.

  161. Mark Says:

Another added comment: I just came off the AT&T wireless boards and see that this ID1 update is a major issue with the internal GPS. mysamsungepix.com is a cool site but the GPS caveat should be STRESSED. Ultimately, Samsung is the guilty party in this fiasco with AT&T being the bystander. This does not fair well for future purchases of Samsung smartphones. Well, at least i can still look up directions, I just won’t be able to see exactly where I am. Since my GPS is broken, can I install Windows 6.5? Makes me daring to try it. I still have my Treo 650 ready to go if my Epix becomes a brick.

  162. J.W. Says:

If you updated to 1D1 and your GPS does not work but you really need/want it you can always use a BT GPS Receiver. The advantages are it is much easier on your battery (even when the internal GPS chip is working right), it is more accurate (uses a better GPS chip), acquires the satellites much faster, and does not require a data connection.

Still it was a major screw up by Samsung to break the internal GPS like they did. Has anyone heard if Samsung is going to offer a fix?

  163. Mark Says:

I only used the internal GPS when in pinch. Before the ID1 update, I noticed how much the battery was drained after using a GPS application. If I really needed a full time GPS, I would not use my phone. Of course, we’re all frustrated since we have a product in which something is broken by a “fix”. I still love my Epix, it’s more stable now. I have a feeling SAMSUNG will figure something out. Let’s just hope that if they do, it doesn’t break something else. :)

  164. Drew Says:

My new phone has frozen 6 times since I got it 2 days ago. I guess im goin to try another one.

  165. Fateh Says:

I have tried these steps and it seems to be working for me (Although the performance of GPS still remains an issue and it still takes a long time to lock onto the satellites).

1: Set your Phone mode to Off. Go to Start, Settings, Connections, Wireless Manager. Set your Phone mode to Off.

2: Next run a GPS application (I ran GPSToday) and try to lock onto satellites. (GPSToday would say that the Phone is turned off but ignore this).

3: Close GPSToday or whatever application you were using.

4: Set your Phone Mode to On. Go to start, Settings, Connections, Wireless Manager, Set your Phone Mode to On.

5: Try to use a maping software i.e. Google Maps, Bing etc. For me, the device.exe CPU consumption remained at around 1 to 2% (not like 50 to 80% I was experience before). One thing to remember is that You would need a clearer sky (outside) and around 2/3 minutes to lock onto the satellites

I hope this works out for you

I’m trying to update an Epix I got off EBay to ID1. I’m assuming it doesn’t have it because the phone and PDA versions are different.
I’m following all the steps and nothing is working.

    Using XP SP3.
The Epix is plugged directly into the back of the computer.
I installed the modem drivers, even made sure to go and update them all just in case. All three are installed and say they’re working properly. Only one of them has a com port, does this matter? Also the port is rather high, com 11. Should I take that down?

Ran the ID1 program, put the key and stuff in, fine. Powered off the Epix, powered on. As it booted, it connected somehow to USB, the program tried very rapidly to connect, then ended up with PDA Device not found. I tried in both ActiveSync and Modem mode and it just keeps booting to WM Today screen. No other programs are open, the cable works fine to transfer data, what am I doing wrong?
