Official Windows Mobile 6.5 in April 2010?
Update: Revised timing on the MS Web site indicates a April 2010. I don’t know if i should laugh or cry.
Microsoft’s Windows Phone Web site reports we might be seeing an official Windows Mobile 6.5 release as early as February 2010. It not a done deal yet as we’ll have to wait on Samsung and AT&T to play nice.. and its still undetermined if a an official upgrade will fix all of the Epix’s issues, or if it’ll be a lot more like Trashcan’s unofficial release of Windows 6.5 for the Epix.
..and it wouldn’t be an Epix upgrade without the fine print:
* Not all models of these phones will be updatable. Check with your mobile operator to determine update availability.
** Dates provided by our partners and are subject to change. Update availability not guaranteed.

[...] Microsoft officially announced the Samsung Epix will get official Windows Mobile 6.5 support. There is no official word yet of when, but I suspect late October/early November of 2009. [Edit] It’s a Samsung Epix Update, what was I thinking? New reports indicate possibly in Feb 2010. [...]

this is still awesome! i really want to see what the official rom has is store for us epix users
January 4th, 2010 at 3:09 pm
I bet AT&T finds a way to screw it up for us somehow. But if not, this is great news.
January 10th, 2010 at 1:53 am
I’m happy enough with Trashcan’s ROM that I won’t be upgrading until a lot of people report the official version as bug free. If you have not tried the cooked 6.5 yet, I highly recommend it.
January 10th, 2010 at 12:07 pm
Yes, it will be interesting what the “official” release will include (e.g. AT&T bloatware, new bugs). Seeing a fix for the finger mouse issue would be good (artifacts left over in the Trashcan ROM). I’ve been running the Trashcan ROM since November and I’m fine with it. Very few issues and the WinMo 6.5 interface has grown on me. However, we’ll see when they actually release the upgrade on time or at all. I see that the Omnia 2 is still “December 2009″.
January 10th, 2010 at 10:32 pm
I wonder if there will be very many custom roms. Also does anyone know how to dump the rom from the epix?
January 11th, 2010 at 8:34 am
OK, for those that are using Trashcan’s baked ROM… so are things like GPS, bluetooth and WIFI working properly? I’m itching to drink the 6.5 koolaide, but I’m one of the few that has a perfectly working GPS and I don’t want to break that trying out 6.5. Does the 6.5 upgrade enable touch scrolling throughout all applications or is it only certain apps?
January 11th, 2010 at 2:54 pm
@ CodeJockey: The WiFi works. I’ve tested it by turning off the phone portion and activating WiFi to connect to my wireless router. Bluetooth: I pair it with my old Treo bluetooth headset. GPS: well, that’s a bit of an issue. After changing the setting in GPStest to Standalone, it will work with Google Maps, although it takes a couple tries outside before getting a lock (my Epix suffers from the ID1 patch which affected it back in 6.1). Touch scrolling works for built in apps but not in some of the third party apps. I resort to the optical mouse for those apps (even with the mouse pointer artifact issue). I’d say that if you’re very concerned of messing up your phone with the ROM, hang tight for the official release.
January 12th, 2010 at 11:32 am
Win 6.5 has already been released for the Omnia II on samsungs support site. It just hasn’t been updated on the microsoft website. So hopefully when the site says Feb it actually will come out.
January 12th, 2010 at 2:26 pm
It worked like a charm does this mean its unlocked also?
January 13th, 2010 at 6:04 pm
Why would Samsung and/ or AT&T spend resources on making the 6.5 available on Epix? It is a discontinued model & while I would love to have it, I don’t think anyone of them will do it. Please share your thoughts; I am not an expert in this field
January 14th, 2010 at 7:14 pm
It’s simple. Keeping phones to date keeps people from switching phones. Companies make more money with less phone switches.
January 14th, 2010 at 8:04 pm
As a previous guest asked, would this “official” update be available for the unlocked versions or will it only be only an ATT thing. Thanks
January 15th, 2010 at 4:19 pm
@ Elliot
This “official” AT&T ROM *should* work on any Samsung Epix (SGH-i907), locked or otherwise.
January 18th, 2010 at 4:01 pm
My feeling is that it’s probably Microsoft that is pushing more for the update on these older devices rather than AT&T or Samsung. I’m guessing it is to try and keep people from switching from the Windows platform to something else.
And while I don’t see a reason why AT&T/Samsung would want to spend resources on this, they are most likely working with Microsoft as part of a much larger agreement that was signed a while back when this probably looked a little more feasible. I read several posts over at XDA and other sites where the company reps were walking around with the Epix and the i780 months ago that already had 6.5 loaded, so it sounds like the work’s been done for some time (if the posts I read were true).
Of course I could be totally wrong…but either way I’m looking forward to the update just to see what they came up with. Personally I’ll probably be switching to an HTC next fall if the price isnt too crazy.
January 18th, 2010 at 7:28 pm
Anyone who has updated to 1D1 and did not perform the command line reset twice (i.e., *2767*3855#) should do immediately. Of course backup your system and data first to make it easier to restore. I did it last night along with setting the GPS option within the GPStest and now my internal GPS chip works again. Everything else seems to be functioning properly too. I did set the GPS to standalone / navigation / warm which is very important to keep device.exe from draining your battery.
January 18th, 2010 at 8:32 pm
will the update be wm 6.6 ?
January 20th, 2010 at 5:37 pm
I doubt it will be WM6.6 but again I could be wrong. The main part of 6.6 is that it will take full advantage of the touch-screen to allow for even more touch-friendly usage. Basically more “i-phone” like.
That said, I’m hoping that they design it as an upgrade that will work across all 6.5 phones that you can download from Microsoft directly. Otherwise it wouldn’t technically be an update, just a new version for just-released and upcoming phones.
January 20th, 2010 at 5:47 pm
Just to clarify my original comment on taking “full advantage of the touch-screen” – 6.6 is supposed to support capacitive touchscreens, which is the kind that the i-phone has.
January 20th, 2010 at 10:56 pm
In response to the TheAxMan, yes, the hardware and drivers are all the same. The AT&T Epix even includes drivers for the front camera as well as the software (See /windows/).
January 22nd, 2010 at 2:25 pm
In South Korea market where Samsung’s headquarter is located, Samsung regretfully announced that WM6.5 upgrade for Omnia2 (carrier:SKtelecom) is postponed for 2 months. In contrast to Omnia2 for Verizon, the phone for SKtelecom originally comes with WM6.1 and Samsung promised that the phone can have WM6.5 upgrade until end of 2009. I hope my Epix will have WM6.5 next month. Yet, if same thing happens to Epix…..
January 28th, 2010 at 2:29 am
Looking at the ms site it looks like samsung is doing more than the other manufacturers for updating.
January 29th, 2010 at 2:55 pm
Didn’t the Omnia 2 have an expected release date of January 2010? The site just got updated yesterday and it now says date unknown. Bad omen in my opinion…
February 1st, 2010 at 3:31 pm
its February weres my update
February 1st, 2010 at 3:54 pm
I second that… Where’s my update.
I would like to utilize my Epix’s features before purchasing a new phone…
February 2nd, 2010 at 8:58 am
so what are the chances of the epix getting 6.5.3?
February 3rd, 2010 at 8:42 am
baylorbear134 Says:
February 2nd, 2010 at 8:58 am
so what are the chances of the epix getting ?
(fixed)
February 3rd, 2010 at 8:43 am
(don’t think the epix will get Win 6.5 at all)
February 3rd, 2010 at 6:52 pm
In the meantime, just use SPB mobile shell, i’ve been using it on my Epix for more than a year now. I do hope though that we get 6.5.
February 4th, 2010 at 7:00 am
I’m sorry to see so many people here are so cynical about this. It’s on Microsoft’s website, which means Samsung has already paid for the licensing. @Danish, you must not rely on a 12 hour charge like I do, SPB Mobile Shell KILLS the Epix’ battery life because it’s “useful” features never stop updating. Kind of stupid if you ask me. I do enjoy the fact that unlike my previous phones, my Epix lasts 12-14 hours under normal usage. It lasted about 8 hours with SPB.
February 4th, 2010 at 11:33 am
Well the Omnia II update that was listed as November 2009 has changed to “Date not yet available” on MSFTs website. But on Samsung’s support webpage they took down an older update on Tuesday (Feb 2), maybe to get ready for the 6.5 update? If that happens and the Epix update follows the same route, hold on until May. Otherwise just get the cooked rom from XDA. My Epix runs great with it and SPB mobile shell. And after the ID1 fiasco Im not sure I would trust Samsung to do a great job on the update.
February 4th, 2010 at 1:25 pm
Eh, I’m scheduled for an AT&T upgrade discount in Oct ’10. I’ll take my chances with the offical Windows/Samsung release of 6.5 when it comes out. Don’t care if it breaks it somehow like ID1. I’ll just switch phones come October regardless.
If I get a touch screen phone again it will need to be capacitive instead of pressure sensitive. Can’t stand that on the Epix. Among all the other quirks/issues with the Epix, this is what stands out the most for me. The touch screen is so bad, they should have just avoided making it a touch screen and forced you to use the mouse pad (which I do like).
Let’s hope the February date holds true and the fresh look of Win 6.5 makes the phone more usable.
February 4th, 2010 at 2:12 pm
@Thyme. I agree you do need to charge more often. I usually can get through a day if I don’t use bluetooth and Wifi is always off for me cuz 3G is good enuf. I usually put it on charge at night when i go to sleep.
February 5th, 2010 at 8:47 am
Well, I finally got tired of waiting for the “official” 6.5 release. My Epix was acting up (random shutdowns, and my laptop would not sync), so I hit the ATT store last saturday to look in to an LG EXPO running 6.5. None in stock. As per usual visits to ATT store, I stipped and fiddled with an Iphone. The dark side finally won me over. After a week of using the Iphone, I don’t think I will ever look back at WM (although I will try 6.5 when it is released)
now for the jailbreaking….lol
February 5th, 2010 at 9:53 am
Ive tried the iPhone and the Bold, just cant manage to type emails on those screens correctly. I’m fine with qwerty + touchscreen model – i keep checking the website every day for the upgrade!
February 5th, 2010 at 3:25 pm
If the rumors are true, it’s just another 1 month and 5 days before I get my hands on a shiny new HTC HD2.
I know Feb 2010 means “sometime in / around Feb.” for ATT, but I really wish they would release the damn thing already so I could at least get 1 month of frustration-free use from my Epix before I move on to the HD2.
Besides, I want to flash my phone before I donate it to charity (I donate all my used phones). I want to donate something that’s less buggy and hopefully the WM6.5 ROM for the Epix will be that.
February 7th, 2010 at 1:21 am
I have, unfortunately given up on the epix and purchased an Iphone from a friend that had a cracked lcd. Bought a new lcd and will replace it asap. Hate to leave this group as mysamsungepix.com has given me some good times, especially with trashcan’s roms. But the epix is just so buggy that I cannot stand it anymore. So to all who care,
I wish you well on you adventures with the epix.
AJ
February 7th, 2010 at 11:46 am
Wonder why some Epix phones are so buggy while others are not. Anyone have a theory or clue?
Fortunately I am in the latter group with only the well known aGPS breakdown caused by ID1, rare lockups and an occasional loss of voice command audio through a bluetooth connection. In fairness the lockups and voice command audio loss only occur if the phone has been on continuously for several days and if I have multiple programs active. Plus the *276*3855# reset fixed the GPS for use in Standalone mode.
If I had one of those buggy Epix phones, it’d be long gone, either to a HTC model or the dark side (iPhone). As it is I’m hoping the promised WM6.5 update fixes the few remaining issues (for me). Assuming it does then I’ll be keeping this phone around for a long time as I really like its form factor and features.
February 7th, 2010 at 11:37 pm
also has anyone had any tarecordexecute (or something like it) problem on their epix? I constantly got that whenever i restarted.
February 8th, 2010 at 9:47 am
I’m fairly new to this forum and am surprised by the number of problems reported. I really didn’t have any issues other than the occasional system freeze but that usually happens cuz of some 3rd party software.
February 8th, 2010 at 3:48 pm
I too have not had many problems with the Epix…
The ID1 update did crunch my GPS function… Patiently waiting for the update…
February 9th, 2010 at 8:13 pm
“Очень полезная вещь”
February 12th, 2010 at 7:28 pm
I’m in the latter category also – have had the Epix for almost a year without much of any incidents. Use it for phone, contacts, e-mail, GPS, surfing, etc., etc., Once every other month or so I receive the slog dump message, but a quick restart fixes it. I’m very happy with the phone. Just want the 6.5 os to take better advantage of the touch screen.
February 14th, 2010 at 10:55 pm
agree with shore_guy other than the sound cutting out i prefere this phone over the iphone anyday but im loosing hope 2/14/10 and still nothing
February 14th, 2010 at 11:28 pm
I have to say i am very lucky from the items I read here both my wife and I use the Epix and when we do experience a problem it is usually related to a 3rd party app….
February 15th, 2010 at 2:25 pm
Hi dude’s,
It is taking *****ing ages, before their is something for epix, because it has a damn square screen, i use like the most of us , spb (download it from isohunt 4free) and even i know it kill my battery i must use it because wm 6.1 has a crappy interface, and if you really cant wait fro wm6.5 , you can dl them from xda -developers….
have one small question does the update erase all my data(programs, and files)???
February 15th, 2010 at 3:10 pm
what is the link to download spb (download it from isohunt 4free)??? and is it a trial version?????
February 15th, 2010 at 4:15 pm
Ben – Yes, when you install 6.5 it erases everything. You can find several free programs that will back up your data though.
February 16th, 2010 at 11:49 am
by putting up this February 2010 on the website, they’re just torturing us – release the ROM already!
February 16th, 2010 at 1:34 pm
I just got off the chat and off the phone with Microsoft regarding this update. Neither Microsoft, not Samsung can tell me anything about this update, pretty rediculous.
All I want is a fully functional phone, not a crappy update that renders my device useless.
Maybe someone else can get a bit farther than me on this…
February 16th, 2010 at 1:50 pm
what is the link to download spb (download it from isohunt 4free)??? and is it a trial version???

February 17th, 2010 at 10:31 am
Ooooh, 11 days left until February is over. WM 6.5 is coming our way!! LOL
I think I’m better off downloading the cooked version.
February 17th, 2010 at 1:48 pm
jduk: I’d like to cheer as well (btw, you can subscribe to static page changes in Google Reader – just put its url in New subscribtion textbox), but considering that Samsung and AT&T have no problem with delaying fixes by several months, I am afraid that I am checking the page a bit too eagerly…
February 17th, 2010 at 3:32 pm
Yeah I catch myself checking the page every day as part of a routine. For some reason I don’t expect it to change anytime soon, next month it will probably still say it’s scheduled for Feb 2010.
February 17th, 2010 at 4:55 pm
Me too — every freaking morning. Grr…
February 17th, 2010 at 7:56 pm
I second that.. I check every morning, first thing…
February 18th, 2010 at 1:20 am
… every morning.
Guess that means I’ll stay out of the way on day one then
February 18th, 2010 at 8:49 pm
at first it was every day now its like every 3rd day
February 19th, 2010 at 6:24 am
might see a price drop on the used market if it goes beyond March 1.
February 19th, 2010 at 9:05 am
Glad I have a SquareTrade warranty on mine…
Going to turn it in, due to the non-functioning features, if this update is not in before March.
February 19th, 2010 at 9:39 am
still no udpate, Im guessing its att working on integrating their crapware into the phone and cripple it. If att could figure a way to charge a nickle evertime you touch your phone they would.
February 19th, 2010 at 12:29 pm
I’m assuming most of you don’t call Samsung about every other day, just to bug them about the software update?
With a little over a week left, I am starting to get a bit angry with this.
It’s like buying a car, and having a recall, but the recall won’t be available until 4 months down the road.
What a crock
February 19th, 2010 at 6:59 pm
Sorry guys… those of us with prior experience with WinMo and Samsung/AT&T-promised updates have been through all this before with the BJ series. We tried passing on the stories but were met with derision, skepticism, and “it’ll be different this time!” posts. I understood those reactions as the news is unpleasant but I seriously recommend moving to another platform (and away from Samsung smartphones) that sees updates, such as Android or BB. I’m not trying to be a jerk, just trying to pass on my own experience and the best advice I can give.
February 22nd, 2010 at 12:11 am
they did realize the update for Jack – why not for Epix? It’ll come out but you have to depend on AT&T – plus I’m sure they’ll find a way to cripple Android updates also.
February 22nd, 2010 at 9:12 am
Yeah I’m never going with Samsung again. It doesn’t surprise me the update is not out yet. I don’t really blame AT&T for all this, but it would have been nice if they gave us comparable replacement phones right away, instead of replacing with a new Epix, then forcing us to take a 4th replacement until we received a comparable replacement phone. Can’t wait until the Fall when I’m eligible for a discounted upgrade to a new phone.
February 22nd, 2010 at 9:52 am
I give up on getting an update for my Epix! Mr Epix I love you, but you have bugs that need to be fixed!, I’m gonna miss you but I think I will fall inlove with my iPhone in no time @ all!
February 22nd, 2010 at 12:49 pm
This is driving me nuts- checking every day like most of you… I’ll reserve judgment until March 1st however.
February 22nd, 2010 at 1:03 pm
Agreed, there are still roughly 6 1/2 days left in February but I don’t foresee anything happening on the weekend, so the chances of an update actually in February are starting to look grim. Meanwhile I’m researching my options for my upgrade date in 2 months and trying to decide whether to go to the HTC Tilt 2 or to the dark side with an iPhone. Both are great devices, however, the overall app store and standardization of the iPhone is winning me over at this time. A coworker with a HTC said to hold off that there’s a new Samsung coming out, no way, Samsung makes great TVs but as for the phones, I’ll avoid them like a plague from now on.
February 22nd, 2010 at 1:23 pm
As said before, I too am looking for my next device, due to the lack of functionality with Samsung’s software.
I am staying away from phones with moving parts, as I found out with my HTC 8525.
February 22nd, 2010 at 4:33 pm
I got tired of waiting for the update and the bugs with my Epix and now have an HTC Pure. For the most part, it’s a good phone. I’ll stick with this one until the Windows 7 mobile phones are released. Have you seen these? Very sweet. I’m Zune HD owner so seeing Microsoft folding the UI into the new phones (including Zune for media files on the phone) is a great thing. I’ll still check for the Epix updates for the heck of it. I’ll always hold a special place in my heart for the quirky Epix, my first Windows mobile phone. You never forget your first.
February 22nd, 2010 at 10:38 pm
No updates this month? I want it badly, especially because AT&T found out I have the phone just from me making calls, might as well spice it up for a $30 a month data plan that doesnt even include texting lol
February 23rd, 2010 at 4:49 pm
Waiting myself, got rid of the Epix a while ago, still partial to it, and want to see if the fix works. A side note, I got out of the Epix and moved to the Fuze, which I loved, until I lost it. Frustrating when AT&T wanted me to pay full price $548 for a new Tilt II to replace to fuze, so jumped ship to t-Mobile and an Android 3G phone. While I like it, it isn’t a WinMo phone and has limitations, I am just waiting for the HD2 to drop the end of march, as that is the ultimate phone right now.
On a side note, I live and work in manhattan, and I will say the Internet and phone were horrible on AT&T. I would not be able to reach the internet, and calls would either drop all the time, or just go to voice mail. Aparently, there are only 2 cell towers for the whole of downtown manhattan, and with the iPhones, they have limited capacity. No such problems here with t-Mobile…
February 24th, 2010 at 9:28 am
Tick tock tick tock…
February 24th, 2010 at 9:49 am
nygman, your service wasn’t bad in your area, AT&T honestly just plain sucks. I’m tethering with full signal as I type, and yet, I still have timeouts and dropped connections. I constantly hear the “New Voicemail” sound, only to pull out my phone and see it having full signal, and when I try to use keep-alive data apps, every 3 minutes, AT&T disconnects me from voice and data. I partially blame AT&T for being a terrible phone company, and I partially blame Apple, because the iPhone has caused AT&T to lock down their service A LOT (and is probably why the Facebook app for windows mobile no longer works)
February 24th, 2010 at 1:08 pm
I have the Windows Mobile Facebook app and it still works fine on my Epix.
February 24th, 2010 at 2:13 pm
Yeah, my facebook still works on my Epix. As for AT&T sucking? I realize they have a lot of work to do and wireless may never be perfect, no matter how hard they try, there’s still probably going to be holes. They’re still a lot better than Sprint has ever been in Sprint’s own home town. And according to a press release on Monday, they’re beefing up their 3G network in Missouri a lot (I would guess other states as well), and then I read articles like this http://www.pcworld.com/article/189592/atandt_roars_back_in_pcworlds_second_3g_wireless_performance_test.html in PC World yesterday which make me not want to jump the gun to Verizon so fast. Plus the fact that Verizon is on a limited CDMA network anyways. As for the issues you’re having Thyme Cypher, I would think that the Epix itself might have some part of the blame, along with Samsung & Microsoft.
February 24th, 2010 at 3:36 pm
OK, two days left for AT&T to keep their promise.
How about if we make Monday March 1st, return-Epix-to-AT&T-day (provided they don’t keep their promise)?
February 24th, 2010 at 8:39 pm
epix is one hell of an awesome device. I got the most/buck. Cant get a comparable phone at $99(about an year ago). I think the form factor is amazing. The only problem for me i the gps doesnt work after the id1 update and it doesnt bother me as much as i only travel in the summer. as long as i get the new update before summer starts, i am very happy with samsung.
and ATT does not suck at all in the places i travel or live. I always had the best voice quality and best internet speed of any of my friends with other carriers. verizon has the slowest network.
February 24th, 2010 at 9:39 pm
I switched to a BlackBerry Bold 9700 in December, and will never look back at the Epix. The BB is a similar form factor, but it’s fast & reliable.
February 24th, 2010 at 10:42 pm
I was assuming it was my location, but alas, in multiple cities and states, Facebook only works over Wi-Fi.
And alas, where is our update?!
February 25th, 2010 at 12:29 am
if u r having problems with your connection here is the fix. it will give u all the settings u need for at&t, tmobile & a few other carriers. if your gps is not using the data connection it will also fix that and enable it to use the data connection. fix: go to the windows folder and scroll down till u c a program called gprsmgr.exe. click on gprsmgr.exe. ther is two arrows at the top. click on either one till u get to at&t use then click on save. wait about five seconds till it says provisioning secceeded. then close. now in start-connections-gprs authentication there should only b three settings. now your phone has the correct connection settings for at&t. there is also settings for a few other carriers built into the gprsmgr.exe program. soft reset and your gps should now work.
give it a rest with the 6.5 rom. it will b here. can u not wait? u r like 5yo kids waitin for Christmas. if u would actually read the microsoft site instead of just the dates u would know that the dates r subject to change. u cannot just write companies off cause they don’t do something when u want them to. u should b happy they r even willing to release any updates. if your gonna complain about problems with the epix then fix the problem and post the fix like i just did and stop complaining about the 6.5 update. u only want it cause u think its cool to have but after a week the newness will wear off.
February 25th, 2010 at 2:41 am
are they waiting for the 28th or something?!!
February 25th, 2010 at 8:44 am
It seems they are waiting until they find Jimmy Hoffa.
February 25th, 2010 at 5:46 pm
I think they will not spend their effort on Windows platform until Windows Phone 7 . I gave up Epix, today I purchased iPhone. I will not buy Samsung smartphone anymore.
February 25th, 2010 at 10:58 pm
I am really getting sick of the Epix. Bought it for $150 with a new 2 year contract at AT&T after using it a bit at the store, and thought that I was making a good decision. Don’t get me wrong, the Epix was a great phone for the first month or so. GPS worked perfectly, 3G and Wifi all perfect. I was enjoying my time with the Epix. Then comes along the ID1 update. I was excited to update it and gain new features/fixes, such as the ability to send MMS messages.
Update, everything seems to be going swimmingly, but alas, GPS stopped working? Hmmm… ok. As time goes on, I notice more issues. I will be texting people, waiting for replies, yet alas, nothing comes. 40 minutes to an hour later, the phone informs me, “Text Message Not Sent” and asks if I want to resend! So annoying, and this only gets fixed after I reset my phone.
I will never by a Samsung phone again if this is how they treat their customers.
Wish I bought a different phone when I started my new 2 year contract, but now I am stuck with this garbage.
February 26th, 2010 at 12:08 am
samsung did not force u to do the id1 update. i never do any update on any phone till i read the forums to c if people r havin problems with the software. i propably will not update to 6.5 when they release it either. maybe its a fluke but i have a pre id1 epix and the only problem i have had that id1 was supposed to fix was with the ringtone. but i fixed that myself. i never got a slogdump error. i have done everything wtth the epix. edited video and audio on the epix. use tomtom on the epix. used the epix as a wifi router. shared internet through bluetooth and usb connections. i could c myself still using the phone even after i upgrade this summer. i got my epix on amazon.com a couple weeks after it was released for $5.98 new. amazon is the cheapest place to upgrade. thats just my experience with the epix. just like any electronic device some will experience problems. i think its the best device i have had to date. my bad experiences with other devices have made the epix great. my number one rule with cell phone is to never put software on it until i know its safe to do so and never blame someone else if the software malfunctions.
February 26th, 2010 at 12:14 am
honestly, i give up on samsung… gonna get the new iphone in june when it comes out
February 26th, 2010 at 1:49 am
same here.. Never ever buy samsung phone.
I begin to think.. what an interesting concept Apple has! One type of phone. Update and maintain that phone.
Not like samsung.. release 10 or more phones a year and don’t care about them.
How sick is this philosophy.. I even stopped short of buying samsung TV. Looking for better others.
Bye bye samsung.
February 26th, 2010 at 8:03 am
Not surprised one little bit about the fact that the Epix update is not out when they said it would be.
Why? Because of the past record of accomplishment of Samsung and the Blackjack, and the Blackjack II, or should I say the lack there of.
Both of those devices were to have an update on a certain date and both times the dates came and went without a sound from Samsung giving us a hit that the 6.0 or the 6.1 update will be available.
I do believe it was something like 6 moths after the promised release of the 6.0 for the original Blackjack that they had the release finally available.
We were told by our account rep at ATT that there were issues with the update and that more work was needed, but did Samsung tell us this, NO! They kept telling us the update would be out soon.
So when it comes to the Epix I am not in the least surprised that the update is not out, they do have a few days left, so I could be proven wrong and in this case I would like to be, but if I were to bet I would double down that they are not going to make it out with an update for this device anytime soon.
February 26th, 2010 at 8:53 am
they never said the 6.5 update would happen this month. they estimated it could happen this month. r u not reading past the date posted on microsoft? it clearly says that the dates r subject to change and may never b available. the dates posted r not definate and it says that so y get mad? i have watched the microsoft site for over a year and every date put up has been pretty accurate so far. either the updates have come out in the month posted or have always been available when the site was updated by the end of the next month. in December 2009 there were two updates that were posted for December\January and were both available by the end of January. one of the updates that came in January was the samsung jack. i am confident that a 6.5 update will b here atleast by mid March and i would even bet on it. stop stressin. u people r makin windows mobile owner look like babies. i love reading forums on the epix when people share tips tricks & fixes but this forun has turned into a bunch of unitelligent whiners that want everthing their way and blame great companies that don’t have to even give an update. if u can’t wait for 6.5 then cook up a rom yourself and stop complaining.
February 26th, 2010 at 10:53 am
Well… The cooked ROM would be fine except I heavily use the mouse and it has some graphics issues. Aside from that, has anybody noticed any other problems? Does the camera app work well with it? I use my camera quite a bit.
…I don’t use the GPS so ID1 is just fine for me, but I can see why people get so angry. This phone has been my ideal smartphone in the form factor, no moving parts, keyboard and touch screen. Its the next step down from my netbook. If I relied on the GPS and had the issues that many here have, I would be a bit anxious for this update as well… It’s a feature, it’s advertised, it SHOULD work without problems.
So, while my wife loves up her iPhone- ( Awesome device in its own right, but aside from jail-breaking it is meant to be a closed system, and I don’t care for that- it’s why I stick with windows mobile ) I’ll keep my Epix either way…
…But that update would sure be nice
February 26th, 2010 at 12:03 pm
porkenhimer obviously works for AT&T or Microsoft
February 26th, 2010 at 12:28 pm
i don’t work 4 anyone. i am just grown up. i can wait for 6.5 cause i ain’t planning on updating till its out 4 a couple weeks anyway. i would just rather read a forum full of useful stuff about the epix instead of a bunch of whining. i am correct about thecmicrosoft site. read it yourself. it says dates r subject to change. anybody should know that means that it might not come out this month. u r stupid.
February 26th, 2010 at 12:46 pm
No, it’s stupid to say it’s our fault for not reading forums before updating our phones. If an update is made available by AT&T/Samsung, we should be able to assume that update has already gone through rigorous testing. We shouldn’t assume every update will mess up your phone. Can’t believe your defending AT&T/Samsung when they clearly didn’t test the update very well at all.
Now, I fortunately didn’t install the ID1 update. But get this, I still have issues with my phone. Random times where it won’t wake up, the sound quits working and requires reboot, etc. Even playing mp3′s, it will “stutter” in the middle of the song and just not play smoothly the whole way through. Call this whining if you want, I’m all “grown up” too, but I expect more from a phone of this price. If you’re fine with the issues, good for you. AT&T/Samsung must love consumers like you.
Re: the Microsoft date, I think we are all familiar with the statement that dates are subject to change. But why post a date at all if you don’t intend to hit that target? Why not just post Spring 2010? Or why haven’t they actually changed the date on the site yet since they obviously aren’t going to make it?
February 26th, 2010 at 1:12 pm
well if u would actually read the site u would know that its only updated once a month and thats propably y they have not changed it. the last update january 28. even if the micrisoft site gets updated today and it comes out tomorrow it will not say its available till the end of March when the site is updated again. u r lookin in the wrong place for the 6.5 update. look on samsung.com for software updates for the epix cause it will say its available on there before it will ever say its available on the microsoft site. the microsoft site just estimates it will b available in that month but not that it actually will b available in that month or will ever b available. thats y they put the disclaimer. seems like the postal service is the only company that garantees dates and even they sometimes don’t get it right. 3-5 weeks sometimes turns into 2 months.
February 26th, 2010 at 1:17 pm
microsoft will probably update their site when the update becomes available. that will probabably be the reason they update that site. not just once a month for no reason that makes little sense.
February 26th, 2010 at 1:37 pm
no it would make sense. there r other reasons they would update once a month. they would add new devices to the list and set estimated dates for devices that they have not set dates for yet.
February 26th, 2010 at 2:06 pm
porkenhimer, I figured I’d give it a try to see if it would fix the Facebook issue. Alas, as I figured, it did not. Oh well.
February 26th, 2010 at 2:32 pm
Has anyone tried to use the phone with a foreign SIM? Mine is unlocked and I’m using a SIM from Telcel in Mexico and the phone reboots endlessly as soon as it registers into the network. The same happens to the I900, as it seems they are just versions of the same system. I hope to see a fix to the radio rom in the update, not only Windows Mobile.
February 26th, 2010 at 3:10 pm
i am using facebook and i never had a problem with it. i am using 1.1.0.17 and befire that was using 1.1.0.14. they both worked fine. my advice would b to remove the facebook app and then make sure u remove the registry entry if it is not deleted when u remove the program then softreset and reinstall facebook. it makes no sense that it would not work if u have a connection unless it malfunctioned during install. ut has happened to me with other programs but i just deleted the program and registry entries and it was fine after reinstalling.
February 26th, 2010 at 4:48 pm
Porkenhimer, how did you fix the ringtone issue without the ID1 update? I’d like to be able to fix that as well without the ROM update. Thanks
February 26th, 2010 at 4:49 pm
@ ASK –> i used a foreign SIM for 2 weeks without any issue last year on my unlocked phone. Do make sure it’s unlocked, i thought mine was but it wasn’t. I had to call support again to get it unlocked.
February 26th, 2010 at 5:25 pm
@danish -> Thank you but I’m sure the phone is unlocked. The problem is that UMTS (3G) support for (U)SIMs other than AT&T’s is broken (and likely, future versions of their own SIMs are likely to fail as well, due to non standard compliance). With GSM-only (2G) SIM cards the phone presents no problems, I’ve tested this myself. This issue has been observed in several phones due to broken radio firmware. Look at this: http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/FreeRunner_unable_to_work_with_3G_SIM_cards BEWARE!
February 26th, 2010 at 7:28 pm
I may be missing something but where is the windows files located on menu?
February 26th, 2010 at 8:43 pm
I’ve done all the typical debuggery. Reinstalled, fully cleaned, etc., it may be my account, who knows?
February 27th, 2010 at 1:30 am
Hey. It’s a LEAP YEAR!
February 27th, 2010 at 1:30 am
… actually no.
February 27th, 2010 at 4:55 am
Joe to fix the ringtone u can use the cab that makes the ringtone full instead of ascending. u can find the fix on this site in hacks and mods. u can also download the clean 6.1 rom which already has the ringtone fixed. plus it has all the at&t firmware removed which gives u a few MBs more for memory.
whereistheupdate the windows file is in your file explorer. just open the explorer and u will find it.
Tyme Cypher u might wanna try to log into facebook using the phone number u used when u signed up for facebook with. when u sign into facebook u do not have to use your email. u can also use your phone number instead. if u use your email make sure u type it out exactly like it is. the email and password r case sensative on facebook. if u have a connection u can use facebook no matter where u r in the world or what carrier u have. sometimes u just gotta say fuck it and hard reset your epix if nothing else works that propably will.
February 27th, 2010 at 8:47 am
here is a small fix for the epix if u r using opera mini 5 installed by cab. ok here is the problem. if u r using opera mini 5 and u minimize it then open it back up the screen will b white and it will say exit and resume on the softkey bar. sometimes when u hit resume the screen just turn white. here is the fix. if the screen turns white and opera does n resume just hit the start menu button and when the start menu pops up click the mouse one time on the white area and opera mini 5 will resume. it also works for other java programs that do the same thing.
February 27th, 2010 at 8:58 am
i forgot to write that the opera mini 5 fix also works with the ok button too. if u hit resume after u have minimized opera mini 5 and the screen turns white u can hit the ok button to minimize again then click on the opera mini 5 icon and when it opens it will b resumed. it only works with the ok button and start button. not really a big fix but it saves u from having to restart opera mini 5 and enables u to keep browsing.
February 27th, 2010 at 10:26 am
Porkenhimer, I may have to hard reset anyway. Then again, I’m about to call AT&T and tell them to cancel my contract because their towers are STILL (this has always been an issue) rejecting my SIM. I thought it was the phone, but I’ve always had the issue of AT&T disconnecting me from the network (data and cellular) every few minutes, despite being ~1500 feet from an AT&T antenna. Often times, for up to 10 minutes at a time.
February 27th, 2010 at 11:35 am
i used to have a problem with my connection too. i called at&t cause sometimes it would take me upto an hour to connect to the internet. they said there was a problem with the tower in my city and it would b fixed within a month and i have never had a problem since. there is a tower less than 3 miles from me and another less than 10 miles away and i have never gotten a 3g connection. my connection is strong though without 3g. my brother is on verizon and i have a stronger connection on edge than he gets on 3g. he has a blackberry bold. so u might call at&t and ask if other people in your area r havin data connection problems. they will tell u if other people have complained.
February 27th, 2010 at 11:39 am
another tip is to call at&t and ask them to credit u for a free sim card cause some at&t stores charge $20 for a new sim card and when u go to at&t they will give it to u for free. make sure if your store does charge that u call at&t first so u won’t b charged.
February 28th, 2010 at 12:03 pm
last day in feb and no update, i love my phone more then anything but this its in desperate need for an update, this was a big let down
February 28th, 2010 at 4:09 pm
how is it a let down? it says this “** Dates provided by our partners and are subject to change. Update availability not guaranteed.” at the top of this page and on the microsoft site. stop complaining!
February 28th, 2010 at 5:00 pm
They shouldn’t even suggest an update unless they’re mostly sure, and by mostly sure, I mean they could give PR as to why there are delays. That’s why it’s a letdown.
February 28th, 2010 at 5:01 pm
Also porkenimer, no, nobody else has the issue. I’m starting to assume it’s my sim, as I’ve had the same issues since I switched to AT&T, but I need to test it on another phone to be sure.
February 28th, 2010 at 7:43 pm
Well I for one am in the same boat. I have Trashcan’s cooked rom and so far it’s working ok, but would rather get the “official” update if for nothing less than the phone portion of the rom. I can’t put 100% blame on Samsung for this as part of any delay in release is not just them but also AT&T and their “modifications” that are needed to make it work right on their towers and the all the useless bloatware to throw in. I have to wonder how much of the phone is broken because of Samsung’s shoddy coding versus poor integration by AT&T. Between my spouse and me, we’ve gone through 3 Epix’s and both are now past warranty. Her issue is the worst as both her phones resulted with the touchpad completely dieing. Mine is still good but plagued with the ID1 update that (mostly) breaks GPS use. Any refurb replacement will automatically have the ID1 update applied before you get it so replacements are pretty much pointless.
With MS making that announcement for Win phone 7, any work on WinMo 6.5 is almost pointless if for nothing more than keeping us suckers happy for a few more months before there’s a buggy Win7 phone.
Our 18mo sentence is up in April and at that point I’ll be hunting for something else while she’s going to be a disciple of the Church of Jobs with whatever iPhone is available. Just have to wonder how raped will Android be after AT&T is done with it.
And Porkhiemer, before you go defensive… I like the Epix… at least the theoretical version of it. It has a good form-factor, and friendly design even with a stylus tucked away for fine work. Any complaint is simply with both Samsung and AT&T for taking this good design and failing miserably–and repeatedly–to make it work like it’s suppose to.
February 28th, 2010 at 11:46 pm
LostSoul3471, you make many great points here, but I have to agree more that AT&T did the damage than Samsung. Much like a lot of my faulty phones, I read around that the Epix was planned for release 3-6 months later than it did, and naturally, AT&T was all “gimme”. Rushed devices are never worth anything. LG Incite? Terrible and VERY rushed.
March 1st, 2010 at 12:48 am
Been checking Microsoft, AT&T, and samsung sites every couple of days too. From my iPhone. Lol. I do miss my epix though. Just couldn’t take the crappy browsers. Even skyfire was slow. Tried trashcans rom, but I also lean pretty heavily on the mouse. One of the main reasons I got the epix was the touchpad. Oh well.
March 1st, 2010 at 1:58 am
Samsung and ATT should be embarrassed. The Epix has had serious issues from the day it was sold! An “Official Upadate – ID1″ created more bugs and broke features of the phone. This shows a lack of commitment to their products because if they both allocated the correct resources to these issues, they would have been solved long ago.
I purchased a samsung LN52A850 LCD television a while ago for like $3000. It had an IR interference problem that caused all remotes in the room to not function while the TV was on. Samsung dragged their feet for months saying there was no problem. They released a firmware update that broke the TV and luckily I was able to find the old firmware and revert it back. After four months of harassing them they admitted that there was a problem and replaced the inverter boards in the TV. It worked. But it took the constant harassing of many online people in forums to get the TV’s fixed.
At the end of the day Samsung has terrible support. The worst I have ever seen in my life. I am an Engineer and would be embarrassed to work for a company like SAMSUNG.
March 1st, 2010 at 9:04 am
Well as predicted, the date has come and gone and no 6.5 update is available.
I have been trying to get to this site to post for some time, but it is completely unavailable, perhaps the flood of crybabies that have come to, well cry moan and complain that a date was not made yet again by Samsung.
I know there are some, I mean one, that thinks that we are a bunch of crybabies about this and that we expect to get what we want when we are told that it would be made available to us.
I for one am complaining because I deal with this all the time and it is time that Samsung start delivering on its dates. This is not a MS problem from what I can see. They are just providing a single location that customers can come and see what is available and when.
For those that have been to the MS site in the distant past, you will remember that the Epix had a date of “Not yet Available” it changed after the first of the year to be February 2010, leading us to believe that an update was on its way out.
Well it is now March and Samsung is closed lipped about it, just like the first Black Jack when it was to have an update out for 6.0
I have called our rep and have tried to call Samsung to get an update, all to no avail. Person I talked to at Samsung says it will be available soon, but would give no clear data as to when.
Well the last time I was told soon it was nearly 8 months until it was released. Therefore, that is what I have to base my opinion on!
I would be fine if Samsung would be up front and say the following,
Due to some unforeseen issues, we are currently unable to meet our delivery dates as was first indicated. We apologize for any inconveniences this may cause you, but we wish to deliver a solid release for you are loyal customers. We are planning on the release to be available for you soon and we will have updates once we have finalized the testing. Thank you for your understanding and continued support.
Do this and the bleeding will be minimized, too late to stop it all together.
March 1st, 2010 at 9:07 am
Epix-User,
I’m sure porkenheimer will come to Samsung’s defense again in regards to the lack of support you’ve received for your TV. I think what it comes down to, is that some people just expect more. When you spend $99, $199 or whatever the Epix cost when you got it, some people expect it to work the way it’s supposed to. The update to fix the problems caused MORE problems. I don’t understand how anyone can defend that. OK, he says, read forums before installing updates. OK, check. But even without the ID1 updates, I STILL have issues with the phone.
That is why we are hungry for the official update from Microsoft. Finally something that MIGHT fix our phone so we can actually use it like… well, a smartphone. So it’s just salt in the wound when Microsoft sets a release date of Feb 28 (yes, even though it IS a tentative date) to tease us. Actually, it doesn’t even bother me too much anymore, I’ve already decided to never purchase a Samsung again, and perhaps even switch from AT&T altogether.
March 1st, 2010 at 10:00 am
jduk, leaving AT&T is an excellent idea. i’d do it myself if not for contracts, and despite the “fad” of hating Sprint, they were the best company to me. i’ve gotten over $600 in free services and products from sprint. As for leaving Samsung, next to my Palm Treo 800w, all my best phones were samsung. Even my first phone, the Samsung-SPH620 (i believe) was very durable. survived a washing machine with only a few unusable buttons and camera. again, samsung is probably not to blame, it’s AT&T and their “final touches.”
March 1st, 2010 at 11:10 am
You guys couldn’t have in all seriousness believed that a posted date of 2/2010 would actually mean an update being released in February! For a fleeting instant, I considered WM 6.5 on my phone before the snow in my backyard melted, but quickly dismissed it as porkenhimer’s “childhood Christmas fantasy.”
For me personally, the Epix presents the best formfactor ever (without the hideous interface of BB). It also has the best camera I have ever had on a phone.
However, in terms of the WM reliability, it’s without doubt, the worst phone ever.
From the sound suddenly and mysteriously dying on me, to the whimsical battery life yanked around by the quirks of an errant LED indicator, to the phone screen just turning on without rime or reason (which results in some unspeakable mishaps while the phone’s in my pocket), to the ring tone resetting to AT&T’s default tone. Yes, the problems are numerous and egregious.
At this point, I don’t even care about the broken GPS, which I have never been able to get to work (since I’ve owned the phone). Or the minor irritations such as the Internet rendered unreachable (probably by some weird race condition in which if you sometimes turn on Bing before the GPRS connection, you can never ever get the Internet until you soft-reset). Or the general slowness of the phone (which might be just a “virtue” of the platform).
So to have the upgrade would have been good thing. Good thing that is, if it didn’t bring brand new Samsung/ATT follies to fore.
I for one am not holding my breath for WP7 seeing as how it’s primarily a stunt to meet heads on with iPhone. The gadget freak in me is appropriately curious, but the business user side of me, which primarily uses the phone for typing emails and browsing the Web is not enthused by the fact that the only formfactor likely being considered is the sideways keyboard one (a la Tilt), which I tried and detested. As so many of you have already declared, I would like a phone with a tactile keyboard where I don’t have to employ a gimmick to start typing.
I figure I’ll give Samsung and AT&T until May to get their ducks lined up, after which the Epix becomes my daughter’s problem, and I get a brand new Glisten.
March 1st, 2010 at 12:42 pm
So.. March… such a beautiful month! Greening trees, birds flitting about the clouds, grass between my toes and a psychotic phone in my pocket……
It’s time to fix one of these things….. one of these things is not like the others……
I’m no longer waiting for the 6.5 update, it’s a fruitless venture, it’s never going to fix the near infinite stresses that this phone can and enjoys presenting on any given day / call.
On the 7th of March, AT&T is releasing the Motorola Backflip, it looks awesome, and it has Android!!!!
Fuck the Epix, all i wanted was a fun robot pal who’s fun to be with. What i received was a technological nightmare with an even more temperamental battery.
When i get my new phone i’m going to see if i can pitch the epix thru the Sheetrock in the AT&T store… “Finally, the Epix has broken my expectations!” i shall proclaim, “i thought this brick would act like a phone and shatter, but instead, it worked just like the brick it is!!!!”
This will be an awesome day =)
March 1st, 2010 at 12:44 pm
just cause i refuse to lower myself to comlaining about an update for my phone does not mean i totally support samsung. i am just a grown up who has other shit like bills and family to think about. if i was gonna complain about something on a forum it would b some real shit. something that effects my life and others lifes and not some mundane bullshit like a wm6.5 update. this forum was great till u stupid fuck started complaininf about how samsung sucks then at&t suck then microsoft suck. u can’t even get straight who u wanna blame. fuckin idiots.
March 1st, 2010 at 1:20 pm
Wow, porkenheimer, way to pull out the Jr. High vocabulary there. I agree with you that there is a lot of complaining here, and as for me, I was pretty skeptical of the February date posted by MS, however I do agree with you again that they did slip in their nice disclaimer. I don’t think any of the three major parties are totally free from blame, however let me ask you this. Would you buy a brand new luxury car, all of the nice gadgets that you pay extra for and expect to work (say GPS, built-in speaker phone, sunroof, leather seats, the whole shebang) and be okay with the GPS freezing up, phone not working, and the car stalling every 150 miles? Would you not take it back to the dealership and expect them to fix it? And then they say, “hey, we have a fix for it, but you’ll have to wait at least a week, meanwhile feel free to keep driving it.” Would you still wait after two with no complete fix? I think you’d be a little furious, and lemon laws would eventually protect you in your situation.
In the same regards, we as consumers expect that when we pay a decent amount for a product that we get decent customer support in return. In the wireless world, all one has to do is look at Sprint to see what the lack of customer service can do to a company.
In the end, this is a forum! A place where people can share thoughts and information about a product.
March 1st, 2010 at 1:21 pm
i called at&t they said that there is one update sceduled for samsung in the near future but it was not for the epix and knew nothing about a rom update for the epix. he put me on hod for about 15 minutes then said he taked to someone in research & development at samsung that said they know nothing about the epix update and that microsoft makes all the roms and if there was a rom comin that microsoft would have notified them by now. they are aware of the date on microsoft but have heard nothin from microsoft. he then said that samsung advised him that maybe the date was meant to b for the omnia 2. i had hope that it was comin too but i might give up now.
March 1st, 2010 at 1:23 pm
Porkenimer:
Clearly your a f*ing idiot too. Since you have the time to read through the forum a trash everyone on it despite your “grown-up” responsibilities. What are you like 12 years old? People are allowed to complain about a couple of hundred dollar brick that we all purchased. If you don’t like the subject in the forum do somthing else with your valuable “grown-up” time.
March 1st, 2010 at 1:40 pm
i guess im an idiot i was thinking they were going to to the update before the end of the month
March 1st, 2010 at 1:46 pm
maby they scraped 6.5 maby they might make windows phone 7 update for it
March 1st, 2010 at 1:47 pm
the subject of the forum is to provide the best tips hints tricks hacks & software for the epix. anyone thats reads this forum has to read through the garbage to get to the good post. u ain’t smart enough to comprehend. its called mysamsungepix not ihatesamsungepix. if u don’t like the phone and can’t wait for an update but something else. pay the $75 early termination and u can get a tilt2 for $0.01 on amazon. i get all my phones on amazon and they usually charge me $5.98. got blackberries & windows mobile phones for just shipping & handling. there is no trick u just fill out the form and pick your plan and u got a new phone in less than a week. called this number 800-936-5700 for microsoft and was told the only imformation they could give was whats on the site and was told to keep watchin the site.
March 1st, 2010 at 2:06 pm

March 1st, 2010 at 3:35 pm

March 1st, 2010 at 5:01 pm
Dear John,
Thank you for your inquiry. There is no update currently for the SGH-I907 nor is there an estimated date of one being released. We do apologize for the inconvenience.
How Can I Get A Firmware Update On My Phone?
Samsung does not release “firmware updates” to the public. These updates are released strictly to Service Providers, who then distribute them to customers.
For more information, we recommend contacting your local Service Provider for details. Below is a list of contact information for the major Service Providers.

Anything to do with software releases is essentially a creative work. It is not a science. That means doing it right, or even close to right takes as long as it takes.
Everyone saw the result of ID1. That was in all likelihood a rush job because it was early in the marketing cycle of the Epix. It’s hard to sell something that seems broken.
Now that the Epix is off the market, there is less time pressure. Maybe they will do it right. At least be thankful that there is a public intention to make the update available.
After all, while it will contain fixes, it is also a version upgrade.
The version upgrade is more than generous. It is also harder to do than just a fix.
Take a look at the list again. There lots of phones which aren’t on the list at all, never mind any slippage in dates.
Everyone misses deadlines. Some of those deadlines were a lot easier than delivering a version upgrade on rom. Who are we talking about? Just look in the mirror.

isnt it funny how its not februrary anymore, and how i foresaw this…lol

Maybe the date is a typo, should be Feb 2011.
March 2nd, 2010 at 11:10 am
I use to have a BJII and last year upgraded to an Epix. I’ve been happy with both phones, I upgraded for the touch screen, Wi-Fi, and mouse. I also applied the ID1 fix as soon as I got the phone and everything on my phone still works fine, including mouse, GPS, and MMS, which I’ve seen discussed here as potential issues. I guess I’ve been lucky. I am looking forward to upgrading to 6.5, but I have Spb Mobile Shell so the interface is already pretty good.
Now, back to work so I don’t miss my release date!!
March 2nd, 2010 at 1:23 pm
An upgrade to Win7 on this phone,,, lol, AT&T will say, “yah sure, send your phone in so that we can re-fill the headlight fluid, flush your 6.5 rom from Trashcan, and give you a great big hug for holding onto this phone for months longer than anyone else (because Obama got us a little to hopefull about everything! love the man, but seriously).” this right after they fix the sheetrock at the local AT&T dealer that i’m going to make a mess of, so bare with them if they are a little busy.
Hey porkenimer, most of the whining in this forum has been you whining about the whining, so quit being a mathematical dipshit and extending all of our whining buffers into the red.
STFU and long fuck the brick =)
March 2nd, 2010 at 2:20 pm
fuck u chris. quit braggin bout how your gonna mess up walls cause u ain’t gonna do shit. there is alot of whining on here by peeons lije u that can’t wait for an update so they wanna blame someone and break their phone. your a joke.

Fact: The Samsung Epix is a phone that was pushed to market without being fully tested
Fact: Samsung has not addressed the issues with the Epix in a manner consistent with a “fully supported” product from a company that makes commercially saleable products
Fact: I plan on gently dipping my balls onto Samsung’s forehead as payback for the UBER FRUSTRATING past 18 months of my life (when I’ve been stuck with this POS phone)
Fact: porkenimer does not use upper case characters because an upper case character killed his or her dog during their youth
Fact: Whining on this board will not force Microsoft or Samsung to release an update any faster
Fact: Whining on this board does (most likely) make the whiner feel a bit better because they have shared their passionate frustration with a community that shares a similar interest
Fact: Writing facts in a linear fashion, with all of them being preceded by “Fact:”, does not make any of your statements factually accurate
In Summary: The Samsung Epix is, and has been since the date of its launch, a substandard phone, and one which is leaving my daily use the moment my fahcking contract with AT&T is up.
Suck it MySamsungEpix Community!

There will be no Windows 7 Mobile for the Epix- Microsoft said that only new phones will have it.

Well said Tron Bike.
Re: upper case characters, porker’s life is too busy to be messing with pressing the Shift key. He has bills to pay and a family to take care of. We wouldn’t understand. Leave him alone, he’s a adult, OK?
March 3rd, 2010 at 1:05 pm
jduk every post u have wrote has been a complaint. u r fuckin stupid. check out these capitol letters, FUCK YOU. u can sit on here all day and write what u want cause i already know u can’t fuck with me. u only want 6.5 so u can b cool and tell your friends about it. UI is the only difference in 6.1 & 6.5 and 6.5 is just not as good as 6.1. so u can get mad like a little bitch and write what u choose cause u r just makin yourself look stupid as fuck. u r the type that ruins these forums for people and complains just to complain. knows nothing about these devices but just want a phone based on how cool u think it is. so i know u’ll respond cause thats what u do but u can save it cause i will pay no attention to u. i said u was a peeon and that means that your a peeon.your a super hater. hatin through a website. ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:26 pm
Hey porker, if I wanted a phone to show off how “cool” my phone is, I would have gotten an iPhone. All I wanted was a Windows Mobile phone that WORKED. The Epix did NOT WORK AS IT SHOULD HAVE. So, excuse me, but you’re gonna hear a lot of complaints when a phone has as many issues as the Epix does. Who are you to decide what content is listed on this forum anyway? Are you the site admin? By the way, heard of the recalls on the Toyota’s accelerator issue? I bet there’s people complaining on car forums because of that situation. That must be driving you nuts. Have a good day
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:51 pm
its not upto me whats listed on here but all u do is complain. i am fure there r people complaining on every forum about everything. u r not interested in tips or fixes though all u wanna do is complain.my epix is great cause i made it great by takin advice from others on many forums and using my own knowledge of windows mobile devices. its like when netcf 3.7 came out and people wanted it cause they assumed it would b better cause it was new then they realized 3.5 was better cause 3d apps won’t work on 3.7. they figured the problem out cause they asked for a fix when they complained. all u r doin is puttin down the epix and not even carin about nothin except for when u can put an official 6.5 rom on it. every problem i have had has been fixed. this is absolutly the best device i have had. not the coolest but by far the best. list of problems
gps not workin
mms not workin
data connection not workin
beejive not workin
coreplayer & tcpmp not workin
java not workin
phone freezing up when charging
ringtone not workin
assigned buttons not workin
internet sharing not workin
cm wifi internet sharing not workin
wifi not working
ie not browsing at all
plus several more. all problems were fixed because i stopped complaining and started askin for help if i could not fix it myself.

Porky,
I love my Epix for starters, but there are people that expect some of the features to work better than they are currently, and they don’t. They are frustrated and find one of the few places on this vast internet where their phone is the focal point so that’s naturally where they discuss how they are feeling about it. For you to come in here and take it upon yourself to chastise everyone, ESPECIALLY in the manner that you do so ( ” U LOOK LIKE UR TXTING YOU BFF MELANIE ABOUT DA NU HANNA MONTANNA EPISODE ” which leads US to believe you are likely 16… let alone the profanity and “Tuff Stuff” insults ) is funny.
… So throw the **** YOU, HOWZ DAT? my way, call me names, I’m whiney and you are the big man LOL…
Because you know everyone cares so much!!!
March 4th, 2010 at 9:45 am
well it’s not like AT&T & Samsung have been on time before but you know they have released the update for the Jack. That fact alone makes me believe an update for the EPIX will be released. Maybe they just need more time. As it stands, we’ll never know the exact facts behind how this works. All we know is that MS has EPIX listed which means that they might even have given the update to AT&T & Samsung. Now it’s up to them. All we can do is wait. Arguing in this forum isn’t going to help any one.
March 4th, 2010 at 10:23 am
Fact: Official date for the 6.5 release for Epix has been pushed out to April 2010:

Fact: Disappointment warshest over TronBike
March 4th, 2010 at 10:42 am
The next date for total disappointment and shock that it was not released is now April 30 then. lol.
March 4th, 2010 at 10:49 am
its a conspiracy
March 4th, 2010 at 11:01 am
I think danish said it perfectly – “As it stands, we’ll never know the exact facts behind how this works.” We can complain all we want, but it’s not going to make them release the update sooner.
And if you are continuing to have problems, why not check out the resources available to you now? XDA dev has a ton of information on fixing several of the issues. And although some are a bit more complicated than others, it might be enough to at least get you started.
Like many others, I have also had my fair share of problems with this phone. But I’ve also learned a bunch of how Windows Mobile works and what you can do with it. I absolutely love using Mortscript and being able to create simple utilities to make using the Epix that much more enjoyable. All it took was a bunch of reading and researching and a whole lot of hard resets, but my phone works great now. I’m stopping short of loading the lastest build from trashcan mainly because of the promise of an official update and some of the cursor issues others are experiencing but I haven’t ruled it out yet.
I do think that everyone here has a right to complain about their phone not working correctly – if you plunked down a large chunk of dough for this phone, you deserve to at least have it work correctly without freezing, errors, etc.
But the phone has been out for over 17 months now and is steadily getting outdated by newer and hopefully better models. If you want to keep using your phone or if you are unfortunately still under a contract, I definitely recommend doing the research to make your phone work better. There are a lot of tweaks and utilities and guides on this site that you may or may not have already tried that will help your phone.
The fact they are trying to get another update out to us means that hopefully it will last even longer, but I take that with a large grain of salt.
March 4th, 2010 at 11:03 am
Well… it’s at least a LITTLE encouraging that they updated the release date…. hopefully that’s a sign that they didn’t just abandon it, but as said before.. We just don’t know.
March 4th, 2010 at 11:06 am
It just got updated a few minutes ago to April 2010!?!?!?!?!
What the heck, come on already. I had to get a Treo Pro because I couldnt use my darn Epix, and it was out of contract so it costs $$$
March 4th, 2010 at 12:16 pm
Yeah don’t get me wrong, I use mortscript too, customized the interface to my liking. That was awesome and fun to learn. That’s why I got Windows Mobile over the iPhone, easier to mod. But the issue with not waking up and random no volume are the two big things I wish were fixed. Anything on the xda developers site to address those issues?
April 2010.. the next countdown begins.
March 4th, 2010 at 12:39 pm
For anyone that is about ready to give up on their Epix and has tried using other various tweaks and workarounds – have you tried using trashcan’s 6.5 rom? I would definitely try that before spending even more money to cancel a contract/buy a new phone.
Here is a link to the thread (There are also several youtube videos and even a tutorial on this site that will walk you the setup):

March 4th, 2010 at 12:44 pm
did u try the audio control hidden menu? it might help.
March 4th, 2010 at 1:01 pm
Now that WM 6.5 won’t be coming out until April (at the earliest), I’ll probably end up going with trashcan’s rom.
Audio control hidden menu? Hey, funny!
March 4th, 2010 at 1:06 pm
The audio control hidden menu was a blessing – no more volume issues!
As for the phone sometimes not waking up – this really hasn’t been a big deal for me. It usually happens once every 2-3 months and I have to reseat the battery and reboot. Would love to fix that, but I don’t really have anything to go off of to see what’s causing it.
March 4th, 2010 at 1:37 pm
I remember using the hidden audio control, that was fine and all, but it didn’t fix the issue where the volume would disappear. I regularly place my phone on vibrate, and the issue seems to happen after switching from vibrate to ring. A few times a week the audio will not work until I rebooted. Doesn’t happen consistently so I cannot determine what is causing the glitch.
The phone wakeup thing probably happens 3-5 times a week. Have to take the battery out, back in, boot up to fix that.
Hoping WM 6.5 somehow corrects these issues, along with a few minor ones.
March 4th, 2010 at 1:40 pm
I can attest to the fact that Trashcan’s 6.5 ROM has alleviated the “random reboot” issue for me, as well as a few others.
It’s not perfect, but it DEFINITELY helps take the Epix from “holy shit, this phone is cordially invited to lick the sweat off a dead reindeer’s balls!” to “holy shit, this phone is slightly usable, and remotely stable!” for me.
Your mileage may vary.
March 4th, 2010 at 2:38 pm

Check it out:

March 4th, 2010 at 11:01 pm
Anyone know how to back up a ROM in case trashcan’s rom doesn’t float my boat?
Mine’s a pre-ID1 phone with the original AT&T firmware that happens to work fairly well. Has crashed only once since I bought it and the GPS works too. Battery life is measured in days.
This is the first phone I haven’t felt the need to hack…yet.
I’d like to save it and maybe upload it so others can benefit.
Thanks
March 5th, 2010 at 1:18 pm
Also a dumb question, how do you tell if your phone had 1D1 update, I purchased it used.
March 5th, 2010 at 1:55 pm
TronBike, I personally installed TrashCan’s Clean 6.1 rom (320×320 is terrible for 6.5, if you ask me), and as such, am hoping that 6.5 on the Epix offers some tweaks to it to make it nicer on the unusual screen size. tbird635, TrashCan should be able to instruct you on how to dump your rom.
March 5th, 2010 at 1:58 pm
jduk, the audio issue may be related to alarms. I tried using my Epix as an alarm clock, only to find it not waking me up, nor having volume when I finally did wake. Turning the alarm off, having it off for a good few months, I’ve only lost audio twice, but I’ve had a few abnormalities, such as if you recieve multiple calls (to where one hangs up just as the other starts), the audio can start playing through the ear piece with no fix beyond restarting the device. This leads me to believe the issue is with the audio driver or chipset.

@Xzit, to find out what version is installed on your Epix,
- go to Start, Settings,
- go to the System tab,
- select Version.
If your PDA and Phone version both end in ID1, then you have the ID1 patch.
March 5th, 2010 at 7:00 pm
Yup it is a conspiracy. They’ll release the update AFTER I have the ability to get a new phone. Oh well. And as for Trashcan’s 6.5… it works fine. There’s still some oddball issues that pop up… in ability to wake (remove battery to resolve) usually stems from leaving Opera open and it going into power save. GPS staying on or taking 5min to lock, never fixed and never will be until a proper update to the phone.bin is made. Trashcan fixed the PDA but a bunch of the issues that ID1 tried to fix and/or introduced are all in the phone.bin that covers the hardware itself.
And how about the other random issues, like touch screens just not working (and keep in mind that on the SO’s phone does work in that it is sensing something, but it can’t register an actual location of where it was touched), sound files ON THE ROM reporting back that they are corrupted and mysteriously work after a hard reset. It’s these things that we all complain about and just point out the fact that the Epix was rushed out the door early, and only half baked in testing and component use/coding.
March 5th, 2010 at 9:19 pm
Has anyone (with another WM device) tried to install Android? I saw this article about booting Android on several HTC models: http://pocketnow.com/tweaks-hacks/how-to-dual-boot-windows-mobile-and-android
March 6th, 2010 at 5:32 am
@samblackjack, I tried andromnia (http://andromnia.sourceforge.net/), it kinda booted and then hung on some shutdown screen. It only used 3/4 of the screen so it thinks it is 240×320 screen. It has potential but it needs much more love from developers to be even remotely usable on Epix. It is easy to try.
In beginning of March I got tired of waiting for official update and installed Trashcan’s 28008 ROM. I should have done it when it was released. The phone is so much better and so far it did not hang on me like it did with ID1.
GPS only works in standalone mode, there is the mouse cursor problem (easily curable by binding chfingermouse to fn-something). I have noticed one snag though. While wifi works quite well with WPA2 etc, I had the wifi UI hang with 802.1x PEAP-MSCHAP that used to work with ID1, it just asked for domain and username, never for the password.
So, in short. Trashcan made my phone usable.
March 7th, 2010 at 3:06 am
I have noticed that the volume will usually disappear if I force the phone to sleep with the power button on the side without turning the screen lock on. Also if I let the phone go to sleep by itself the volume will be fine. If I let the display dim and then hit the power button to put it to sleep, the volume will not disappear. In short, if you lock the screen and then put it to sleep it will not lose the sound. I think the problem has to do with the way the power button forces the phone to sleep. When the screen dims or is locked it somehow prepares the phone for sleep. When you force it to sleep before the dimming or lock it must be skipping some important step which causes the volume to disappear. The locking of the screen has eliminated my random loss of sound.
March 7th, 2010 at 2:20 pm
what is the link for for Trashcan’s 28008 ROM??????
March 8th, 2010 at 10:53 am
I have a unlocked refurbished Epix and have lots of trouble on daily basis, even after ID1 update: phone freezes every time i touch mouse button.
Also, it losts date and time every time i turn it off (or battery is pulled out, performed at least 5 times a day).
GPS does not work.
I’m performing hard resets almost every day (through PWR+h or through menus).
Can’t stand it anymore. Can’t wait anymore for Microsoft, Samsung and AT&T.
STUPID, BUT UNAVOIDABLE QUESTIONS:
1) ID1 update will avoid me to update to Trashcan’s 6.5 28008 cooked version?
2) At time (actually, IF) MS/Samsung finally releases this official version, will i be able to install it on my Epix?
3) Is there any harm on using GrandPrix 1.9.2 version, instead of 1.6.4? I’m a Windows XP SP3 user.
Thanks to everyone.
March 8th, 2010 at 5:38 pm
April 2010 ????? !!!!!
Well my plan will be up in May, sooooo I’ll be switching to something else.
I’ll think twice about buying another Samsung, or any other new phone from ATT, unless it has been well proven first.
March 8th, 2010 at 7:10 pm
Did they ever fix the GPS on these babies?
Windows 6.5 isn’t much, if you ask me. The question for Epix users is whether the software will finally work.
I was able to swap my Epix for a Tilt 2, because it kept fritzing on me. Although the Tilt 2 is stable and probably a better phone, I still miss my epix. I miss the mouse. I miss the (nonsliding) keyboard. I liked the square screen. If I could get another one, and be fairly certain it would work, I’d get it in a heartbeat.
March 9th, 2010 at 4:49 am
@Hank http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=544101
@Marcio damn, yours is even worse than mine. I only had mine hang once every several days.
Run \Windows\GPSTest.exe and set GPS mode to standalone. the broken GPS is because aGPS doesn’t work and device.exe spins at 100% utilization like crazy trying to connect to network. standalone mode switches off aGPS.
AFAIK it should be possible to install Samsung update on Trashcan’s ROM and you can also flash back to ID1 or use clean Trashcan ID1 ROM too. My Epix is much more stable with Trashcan’s ROM and it looks like you don’t have anything to lose anyway ;-(.
March 9th, 2010 at 8:18 pm
Marcio:
Also try the command line reset instead of a normal hard reset. I know it sounds crazy but it cleans the memory better and can correct stubborn recurring issues. It helped me. Here are the instructions:
Backup your data. Type in *2767*3855# and follow the instructions. I did the reset twice to make sure everything was reset. Then make sure you set the GPStest as mentioned in the previous post and reload your programs and data.
I think you’ll be surprised at how well the Epix will work.
March 9th, 2010 at 9:40 pm
@0xDEADBEEF Thanks for the info on Andromnia. It looks like I can try it via the MicroSD card and not have to really reset my Epix. So I think I’ll give it a try.
I’m tempted to try Trashcan’s ROM, mainly because I want to try WM6.5. Thankfully, my Epix works pretty well, and only freezes rarely – maybe once every month. My touchscreen stops working on occasion as well, but again, it only happens every few weeks. Otherwise I love my Epix. I guess I’m lucky that I haven’t seen the same type of issues I’ve heard about here.
March 10th, 2010 at 10:09 pm
Dear friends (specially J.W.)
For my surprise, my Epix started to have very good manners…
I don’t know exactly what I’ve done right, but the phone is… working! With no upgrade! With ID1!
GPS seems to be not working and haven’t tested MMS yet, but this is not a big deal for me.
The main point is: no freezings anymore!
It could be the command line reset, thank you J.W!
Or it could be… The SAMSUNG TODAY (menu>settings>personal>today>Items)!
I’ve marked – and it removes all Microsoft’s WM6.1 graphics interface – and all stuff simply started to work properly!!!
Of course, i have the less idea why it’s working perfectly. However, i’m not a software engineer: i’m an cell phone user. And it worked for me.
I suggest people to perform the same changes, since there is a risk-free test. Then, let us know the results.
If another people confirms that this is one solution, maybe we can help more Epix desperated users like me.
March 11th, 2010 at 4:24 pm

anonimous – hate to break it to you, but you’re just erasing the shortcuts not the programs themselves. Although i guess not having to deal with the links in your start menu is helpful too.
March 16th, 2010 at 12:53 pm
I have been patiently waiting for the 6.5 upgrade for my Epix when my screen failed this weekend… now I finally have 6.5, it is just on an HTC Pure. I have loved the site and will miss coming back out here… good luck with the upgrade!
March 16th, 2010 at 11:54 pm
I’m going to install Andromnia on an SD card in about an hour.
I will post a video or pictures if it works properly.
Looking forward to some good results.

Wait long enough, Windows 6.5 will become old news. It’s like if I had to wait until April to upgrade my computer to… Windows XP.
I enjoyed my Epix even with all the quirks and issues. But it could have been so much better. What a shame.
March 20th, 2010 at 3:26 pm
It’s official: Nobody gives a damn about 6.5, we just want our fixes! 6.5 sucks if you ask me anyway, the concept was decent but it’s just a ripoff of the iPhone’s shitty UI.
March 22nd, 2010 at 11:43 am
Justin – Any word on how android went?
March 23rd, 2010 at 8:47 pm
I enjoyed the Epix with just 6.1. I had the 6.5 unofficial. I just got tired of waiting on 6.5 official, now 7 almost here. I left WM devices. Liking Android a lot better.
March 24th, 2010 at 6:57 pm
The update is online now
March 24th, 2010 at 9:36 pm
New ID1 Patch? This one is 105MB as opposed to the old 80MB one.
March 24th, 2010 at 9:42 pm
It’s the same size and file version as the one I downloaded in May of last year.
March 24th, 2010 at 9:48 pm
Oops, I stand corrected. I have the zipped file. =) Never loaded ID1 from all the problems that everyone shared on this site.
March 25th, 2010 at 8:52 am
I guess there’s some movement – shows samsung is prolly not at fault with the other delays, it’s prolly AT&T that’s slowing things down
March 25th, 2010 at 12:08 pm
Anybody install that new update? Anything different what-so-ever?
March 25th, 2010 at 1:50 pm
Downloaded and went to install, but no KEY or ID for the downloader.
Any suggestions?
March 25th, 2010 at 2:04 pm
I’d assume it’s the same as the old version…I think that is

*Jeff*
The ID and KEY do not work on this update.
Not sure why Samsung did not use a ZIP file and attach a txt doc with it, like they usually do.,
March 25th, 2010 at 2:15 pm
Interesting. I suppose that means it’s not the *exact* same file then. That’s promising. What’s the chance that it’s the 6.5 update and just incorrectly named for now?
March 25th, 2010 at 2:30 pm
I may call Samsung and ask them why I can’t get it to work.
I’ll post a response in a few.
March 25th, 2010 at 3:07 pm
AFter speaking with 5 reps from Samsung, Level1, 2, and 3 support, I did get teh ID and KEY for the new update.
IDL 6416
KEY: 2364
If you want me to post the instructions for the update, Samsung has sent me them via. email.
March 25th, 2010 at 3:09 pm
Instructions can be found at this link:
These are VISTA instructions:

March 25th, 2010 at 3:12 pm
Ah, so it is the same key/id combo from the last update, I just gave you the ones for XP and not Vista.
March 25th, 2010 at 3:18 pm
Wonder why they would repeat an update, doesnt make any sense.
March 25th, 2010 at 3:20 pm
Ok, I installed the patch, but so far I can’t figure out what it fixed. It is not 6.5.
March 25th, 2010 at 3:25 pm
Did it fix the GPS issue so it’s like the pre ID1 update?
March 25th, 2010 at 5:01 pm
Yeah it’s definitely the same update, unless they have tried to fix some of the existing ID1 issues. But that doesn’t really make any sense to me since the 6.5 update is (hopefully) close to being released.
Only thing i can think of is that they are tweaking the ID1 release ahead of the 6.5 update to try and address any issues so if someone wanted to go back from 6.5 to 6.1 they could do so. Which begs the question of why they didn’t try and update ID1 much sooner.
It could also be something completely unrelated like changing the verbage on the EULA or in the actual update. I’m totally guessing at this point.
But from my view it looks like the same ID1 update from last year. Based on what is on the Jack page, I would expect them to identify any new update the same way (version 6.5, windows 6.5 update, etc.) so we would definitely recognize it as such.
For those that installed the “new” update – did anyone notice anything different?
March 25th, 2010 at 7:02 pm
i don’t think i wanna mess with this update unless the 6.5 update requires. this might be a precursor to the major update.
March 25th, 2010 at 7:27 pm
I was never able to get Android to boot on the Epix.
I think it is still in early stages, but may consider waiting for them to fix the bugs, definitely more appealing than WM6.5
March 25th, 2010 at 8:27 pm
what is this patch for?
March 26th, 2010 at 9:58 am
Does anyone have the link to the actual AT&T 6.1 ROM?
I’m tired of all the bugs on the cooked 6.5 ROM.
March 26th, 2010 at 3:58 pm
Don’t bother with this update, it doesn’t fix the GPS which is what most people really care about. Now I gotta go through the hassle of putting Trashcan’s 6.5 back on.
March 29th, 2010 at 11:16 am
John, I’ll trade you my mint Epix for your Tilt 2 in a heartbeat… edku822@hotmail.com
“John Says:

Did they ever fix the GPS on these babies?
Windows 6.5 isn’t much, if you ask me. The question for Epix users is whether the software will finally work.
I was able to swap my Epix for a Tilt 2, because it kept fritzing on me. Although the Tilt 2 is stable and probably a better phone, I still miss my epix. I miss the mouse. I miss the (nonsliding) keyboard. I liked the square screen. If I could get another one, and be fairly certain it would work, I’d get it in a heartbeat.”
April 1st, 2010 at 8:58 am
Watch them post the 6.5 upgrade today and then say “Sorry, it was a server accident, April Fools!”
April 2nd, 2010 at 8:37 am
Only 29 more days!
….until we are told that the update will be released in May
April 3rd, 2010 at 6:53 pm
And watch as they push the date back again. I gave up and bit the $$$ bullet and bought a Nexus One. I’d be happy to sell anyone my two Epix’s. I just finished replacing the touch panels on both. Mine was working fine, but scratched to hell, the wife’s was deader than a doornail. Best $20 off ebay you can spend to fix it–$10ea. You just need to figure out a better way of mounting the new one on. The kit didn’t come with a replacement sticky, so I just used model cement I had on hand. Still works but the very bottom is slightly bowed due to having less clearance as before. At this point if the touch panel dies again, no sense in trying to fix it, just get something more current and less sloppily made. I am officially done with Samsung.
April 7th, 2010 at 9:45 pm
Okay, so i accidentally deleted all of my files off of my samsung epix and i didnt know they were like my shortcuts to like my photos and evvverything else on my phone. like i cant even get to my settings, ringtones, photos, annnything. What do i do???
April 8th, 2010 at 12:59 pm
LostSoul3471: do you have an e-mail address to contact you about your Epixes?
April 11th, 2010 at 2:49 am
@ASK: just tack on @gmail.com to my screen name and you should get me.
Oh, and Nexus One is the bomb, as good as an iphone with less “interference” from the likes of apple. But unfortunately has the same short battery lifespan as the iphone as well. Keep a charger handy. Still worth the $530 for the AT&T version.
April 20th, 2010 at 1:03 am
i bought my Epix on Craigslist. i wanted a winmo phone so i could keep Excel files on my phone. i love it. sorry for all those with problems. there has been some good info on this site ,but is there a good site for grownups, that has mosly uselul info without all the drama? thanx

April 27th, 2010 at 7:59 am
I simply cannot believe, I am shocked, that Samsung and AT&T would do this to Epic owners. Shameful, unprecedented.
April 27th, 2010 at 8:58 am
3…..
I CAN believe it. The longer they wait, the less Epix’s that are left in service and the less people to complain when the make another horrible upgrade. Wish they would’ve been respectable from the getgo and helped out the loyal samsung customers. All the Samsung stuff I own, Phones, TVs, Radios, microwave, refridge, stove, oven, dishwasher, excavator, etc. is just waiting to be replaced by a new brand that is loyal to its customers. All this because of a little tiny phone. I hope we all learned the very imporant lesson than all customers need to to be treated with respect or else they are no longer customers. BYE BYE SAMSUNG. PS … My new HTC blows Samsung out of the water. Wish they made appliances and excavators too.
April 27th, 2010 at 1:29 pm
From the perspective of AT&T, Samsung, and Microsoft, they probably have one or more “software upgrade teams”, and they’ve prioritized all of their upgrades across all vendors, devices, versions, etc., all based on revenue and number of devices in use. I know that’s how my company prioritizes projects. And I’m sure the Epix is near the bottom of that list. Sucks for us that we bought an unpopular device.
April 27th, 2010 at 6:28 pm
I’m guessing they’ll miss April but maybe make May. If they were to miss May too then I’d bet the upgrade will never happen. I’d like WM6.5 for my Epix but to be honest if it doesn’t happen I won’t be that upset. That’s because my Epix (with the ID1 firmware) actually operates pretty well and I expect to change phones in 6 months when my contract is up.
I know I’m one of the lucky few that can say their Epix is working well. The only non-working function I can blame on the firmware (as opposed to WM in general) is the GPS chip. I have it working in standalone mode though so the only pain is a few minutes longer to acquire satellites from a cold start.
That all said, I’m about ready to throw in the towel on WM. 6.5 won’t be enough to make me want WM and I’ll need to see how the market reacts to WM7 before I buy one. I don’t want to get stuck with an OS that is dying out and see all the good apps developed for other platforms. Android and the dark side (iPhone) look like they are surer bets.
April 28th, 2010 at 9:25 am
2…
They shoulda skipped all the hassle and just given us a coupon for a discount on a different Samsung phone. Losing customers must not matter. In 3 days I must say ‘Bye Bye Samsung’ as well.
April 28th, 2010 at 10:24 am
meme, don’t be a cock over one little update issue. The Epix is a low end WM device. Just give it a few months and you’ll be bitching about your HTC (as everyone does). Samsung isn’t to blame for these delays per-say. While prior information released about “Microsoft makes the updates” being total bullshit, in order for Samsung to release the firmware, it must go through the carriers. I would not be surprised if the firmware has been done since Feburary, but AT&T’s too busy with the iPhones up their ass to push the ball.
April 28th, 2010 at 11:55 am
ALL ROMS AND OFFICIAL UPDATES ARE MADE BY MICROSOFT. Its just like on your pc, the OS may come with Dell, HP or Compaq firmware but the OS is made by Microsoft. No company in any field would stamp their name on an official product and let someone else make it. Just call Microsoft and they will tell u the same thing. It basically tells u that on their site in the updates for 6.5 page. Don’t u think if Samsung or AT&T was makin the update that they would have a date of availability? They have nothing at all to do with the updates except posting a link to download them and releasing their firmware to put on the OS.
April 28th, 2010 at 1:53 pm
Disagree with porkenhimer… Microsoft makes the OS and it is up to Samsung and the carrier to do their stuff to get it out. Microsoft has been done with the OS for quite some time. This is either Samsung or AT&T red tape. I am not sure which one as I don’t have information on this part.
April 28th, 2010 at 3:24 pm
Its all about money. The EPIX is an aging device that sold several million units but like any other electronic device the consumer will always think newer is better. A cellphones lifespan is very short and thats why u see all the TP2 devices getting updates. All parties involved bring in more revenue because an updated device like the TP2 will outsell an updated EPIX. If Microsoft knew the EPIX would sell 3 million units after being updated we would’ve already had an update. I know u don’t think these updates make any money but they do. Each device sold would give a cut to Samsung AT&T & Microsoft and Microsoft propably prioritizes each update with what device will bring in the most money the. I don’t know what else to say about this situation. Every WM device u will ever see will tell you the rom is made by Microsoft and when we fially get the update it will also say it was made by Microsoft. SETTINGS>SYSTEM>ABOUT it says copyright Microsoft not copyright Samsung.
April 29th, 2010 at 6:40 am
As a developer, I will politely tell you that your assumptions are wrong. Ever notice how core features in the OS work differently for every device? For example, some Samsung Windows Mobile devices do not block internet pictures in E-Mail? The reason lies in the Windows CE Platform Builder. What is Platform Builder? It’s the source of Windows CE in a powerful editor IDE, of course.
Platform SDK isn’t required for drivers, as there are plenty of MSDN documents on making soft and hard drivers and installing them over CAB for Windows CE, so obviously Platform SDK expands upon this.
TouchFlo doesn’t use a service or background application either, it’s actually built into HTC’s builds of the common controls.
April 29th, 2010 at 6:59 am
My mistake. This was written 10 minutes after I awoke, it’s actually Platform Builder and information is available here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms938344.aspx

April 29th, 2010 at 3:07 pm
meme, it’s most likely not Samsung. We must all remember that every AT&T employee is required to have an iPhone up their bum, and it probably co relates to the lack of an update. AT&T has the worst customer service by far.
April 30th, 2010 at 6:27 am
0… Good-bye!
Well today is the day that the update is to be available.
Last look on both MS and Samsung show no new information for the 6.5 update. AT&T also has no information on this.
Does this surprise me? No. This is nothing new for both AT&T and Samsung.
Samsung is done in my Book, and if it was not for the fact that Verizon has less then poor coverage where I live I would switch from AT&T in a heartbeat as well.
Both Samsung and AT&T could have provided us a status of the update, but choose to keep us in the dark.
To be fair there are still a few hours left in the day that the update could be made available. But as far as I am concerned it is too late, I’ll just keep it and I will wait until Windows phone 7 is released and look at that time.
Goodbye Samsung
April 30th, 2010 at 12:51 pm
I would have rather seen Microsoft post, “Summer 2010″ as their expected release date. They’re just messing with us now, with continually changing their dates. Watch now, come Monday, the expected release date will be May 2010.
April 30th, 2010 at 3:21 pm
Like I said before, its all about money. This is why the TMOBILE TP2 was updated in Jan and is gonna be updated again. The Omnia2 came with 6.5 and will be updated with 6.5.5. The newer devices still in production will always be updated first. They will sell more units after being updated than an aging phone like the EPIX will. They milk these phones for every cent they can then leave us hangin when they think the device is past its prime. Think about it, the Jack was updated quickly after being released because it was in production and was still selling well but now the owners are propably wantin another update and will propably deal with the same shit we are cause its past its prime. Its not that its Samsungs fault its just the way the world goes. They will always give more attention to rhe products that benefit them the most where it count the most, the company bank account.
May 1st, 2010 at 12:35 pm
Obviously they’re better off having kept their mouth shut, since this sparked irrationality umong most Samsung device owners. I don’t own any other Samsung devices, but I do know the update issues with Epix are with Epix. Omnia got updated in time. Most all Samsung devices did. If it was okay to base an entire company on one fluke, most notably, HP, Apple, Dell and Microsoft would have all collapsed.
May 1st, 2010 at 8:51 pm
Samsung could never lose chips on one product. They make electrical appliances, TVs, cameras, cell phones & much more. Do u really think they are gonna lose sleep if the EPIX is never updated? The EPIX is not a fluke. The reason it isn’t being updated with a quickness is the same reason 6.1 devices from 2008 to mid 2009 will never be officially updated, cause there is no benefit to updating them. The EPIX was & is a great device that is still able to keep up with devices that are much newer but its past its height of popularity and is past its production run. The EPIX was just released at a time around six months before 6.5 hit the stores which is about the full life of any cell phone these days. That is propably the biggest reason we are having trouble with this update. If the EPIX was released a few months later than Oct. 2008 we may have had an update 6 months ago like the Jack got. So Cypher u can keep sayin I am wrong all u want but if u would think about the pros and cons from a business stand point u might understand y the EPIX is not one of their top priorities.
pros – sell a few more devices
hope to keep a few fed up costumers
cons – device is discontinued
make no profit from an update and give attention to more profitable products.
already sold millions of units and could care less if a few thousand more r sold.

My house is loaded with samsung products because from what i had read they were of the upper tier in the big box stores. I have had about 4 of 13 items go bad within the first six months! Not a great record for samsung. However I probably wouldn’t be so upset if there customer service backed them up, but no go. Every item has been a fight! My microwave, the most expensive one the make, got stuck in the ON mode with nothing in it and got so hot, it burned a hole in the glass before we could get it turned off. It took customer service over a month to get it working again. Our new high end refidge, within one week the ice maker frozen solid. The Samsung rep has located the problem, however Samsung will not allow him to order the parts. However they will swap it out for a new one, but the new one wont arrive until september! The mini fridge is so loud after only six months of use the TV needs to be tuned up when it turns on. I could type for hours about all the problems I have had with there product and even moreso, there customer service. However, the phone (Epix) is the cheapest Samsung product I own by far. I just bothers me the most as i saw its faults daily and once again samsung offered no guideance or help. One by one as my samsung products go bad, they will be replaced by other brands. Samsung has lost me as a loyal customer for good. I now once again own a HTC and my frusterations have diminished. And like my first Tilt, I don’t foresee any future bitching about the product or the company. MEME, Over and Out.
May 3rd, 2010 at 12:59 pm
Fact: Microsoft missed another date.
Fact: We all just got mushroom stamped by Microsoft and Samsung.
Fact: We have no recourse other than abandoning the Samsung products, the Windows Mobile OS, and the planet Earth.
Fact: If my panties were in more of a bunch than they currently are, I would have two balloon knots.
May 3rd, 2010 at 4:03 pm
Meme, HTC aside, because quite frankly, I have found their devices to match the construction of every other device made in the Foxconn factories, THAT is a MUCH better argument. With that, you have the grounds to be a cock about this issue

Android and iPhone appear to be two winners in the SmartPhone OS wars. Blackberry will hang around and be relevant if only due to its lock for the corporate market. Windows 7 may have arrived too late to have a chance, no matter how good it might be technically.
If I get the WM6.5 upgrade (and it works) it’ll just let me hang on to the EPIX through this year and avoid spending money on a new phone and replacement apps. Otherwise, I may bail on WM and the EPIX before Fall.

Go Andoid because there’s no way I’m getting an iNot…..
May 17th, 2010 at 9:57 am
I gave up on the official update months ago and just went with one of trashcan’s roms. Not perfect, but for me it was much more functional than 6.1 – I feel like it added a bit more life into this phone. Still has a tendency to drain the battery when using GPS but I just plug it in when i’m using it and just reboot afterwards – no biggie for me.
That said, when I can upgrade in a few months I will probably choose a different brand. Aside from the Epix problems we know about, things like a proprietary charge/headphone jack instead of mini/micro usb and the functionality of the outside buttons (volume/power etc.) have just never appealed to me.
Regardless of who’s fault it is, I think we can all agree that it would have probably been more benefitical for them to get the epix issues resolved rather than just give up on them – speaking to brand/network loyalty – if such a thing exists anymore. But I appreciate all the help and advice I received from this site – really helped to relieve some of the pain caused by the epix problems.
I’m probably leaning towards WM7 – at least to see how Microsoft trys to upright it’s sinking mobile platform. Otherwise I’ll probably be getting an android. The wife already has an iphone – dealing with that one is enough for me.

Like CodeJockey I’d like to know the source of these no update coming posts. I have not seen one thing about the update from either Samsung or MS, and the MS site still lists it as scheduled for April.
Having said that they have had plenty of time to get it released so it is certainly not looking good for WM 6.5 for the EPIX (unless you use Trashcan’s cooked ROM).
June 2nd, 2010 at 9:05 am
I’m going to assume ASK was assuming. (which is a lot of assuming)
My plan was to hold out hope until MS updated their site one more time. Unfortunately even that doesn’t look like it is going to happen. They were updating monthly, but it has been 3 months now.

No need to update the Epix now- 16 days to iphone4 arrival. ATT will allow you to upgrade to the iphone4 even if your current plan doesn’t expire until later in 2010.
June 8th, 2010 at 12:47 pm
Hey djaxim,
Is that true about the Epix users being able to ungrade to the iphone4. I’ve been an epix user only since last march 09′. Do we have to pay anything for the upgrade, or what would should we say to a rep about the upgrade possibility?
June 8th, 2010 at 4:50 pm
AT&T’s website has some information about the upgrade. Basically, if you’re eligible for an upgrade later in 2010, the price of the phone is higher than if you were already eligible, yet cheaper than paying full price.
June 12th, 2010 at 3:04 am
I have already decided to say F.U. to AT&T and all Win Mobile phones. The Epix is a piece of garbage. I have never wanted to violently destroy a phone more than I want to kill my Epix. It randomly enjoys shutting off the phone function even at full battery and refusing to turn it back on. It also likes to completely freeze if I miss a call or a text. I hate this phone and F*** paying AT&T $90 a month for the cheapest “Smart”phone plan. I am going to Sprint, getting the HTC EVO and saying F*** you to super expensive bills.
Sorry…I needed to vent…I really really hate my phone.

Well it looks like Samsung hasn’t given up on Windows Mobile 6.x just yet. They’ve just announced two new Qwerty-board style Omnia Pro devices. You’ve got the touch screen Omnia Pro 4 (B7350) and Windows Mobile Standard Omnia Pro 5 (B6520). That’s right! Standard Edition! As WMPowerUser reports, The Samsung Omnia Pro 4 will be available
so how about epix

Day two of my iPhone 4 and not disappointed one bit in my decision to switch OS platforms. iOS4 and the iPhone are lightyears ahead of the “smartphone” otherwise known as the Samsung Epix.

July 2nd, 2010 at 1:59 pm
I tried the 6.5 patch and the last message I got was Create COM 5 succeed / ChangeUSB OK. Does this mean it’s done and I can disconnect?
July 2nd, 2010 at 2:31 pm
I got the same message. Still waiting.. Been 40 minutes now.
July 2nd, 2010 at 3:05 pm
OK took the plunge and uunplugged the phone took out the battery and restarted. It booted up into 6.5 just fine.
July 2nd, 2010 at 3:09 pm
Wow Finally ! It went past the “change USB OK” and came up finished. So far patch working fine, also it updated “phone” section and now gps IS WORKING AGAIN.
July 2nd, 2010 at 3:23 pm
Been using the official 6.5 patch since 12 today and it’s been working like a charm. I can achieve a GPS lock under 20-30 sec using google maps. At some points, I’ve locked onto 9 satellites, something my Epix has never
been able to do before.
It is build 21895.5.5.0.90
Other pros besides GPS
1. I can open all ppt files, something that I couldn’t do with Trashcan’s 6.5 Roms
2. There is word completion and when typing, you can use caps lock and the icon will appear.
3. There is mouse function (without the artifacts), but the default is 4-way, you need to turn the mouse on if you want it.
4. Seems IMO to be more responsive that Trashcan’s 6.5 Roms
Only 3 cons I can see so far (minor)
1. I haven’t been able to figure out is getting both the battery icon and the date icon on the upper left screen. (Or see how much battery power I have left besides going into the power option)
2. Samsung limited the ringtone file size to 300 kb, no more long mp3 as ringtones anymore.
3. Can’t really move the icons in the home page, only move it all the way to the top or leave it where it is.
Ehh, it does come with a bunch of ATT bloatware, but that was to be expected.
There is something to remember though. The Epix has been out for quite some time (2 years ish). This patch was much needed and made the Epix a lot more functional now, but you can’t compare it to the iphone 4. Windows 6.5 will never be as snappy or responsive as the apple OS, but it does make the Epix a lot better.
July 2nd, 2010 at 4:33 pm
Oh yeah, maybe I forgot to mention the biggest thing about GPS. I did not configure anything after 6.5 was installed. I happen to try google maps to see if it worked and it did. No device.exe spiking to 70 and achieving lock under 20 sec. Seems so far that this patch fixes the GPS that ID1 broke.
July 2nd, 2010 at 4:34 pm
The official 6.5 download is available at Samsung.com.
July 2nd, 2010 at 5:20 pm
Too little too late I think. I’ve been enjoying my Milestone for about a month now and I don’t think i’ll be going back to Windows Mobile anytime soon. I’ll still try this patch out, maybe it’ll make a good navigation device with just garmin mobile xt installed, now that the GPS is working again….
July 3rd, 2010 at 10:25 am
The Epix has a faster proc & better ram than the Tilt 2 whch has the same proc, ram & mem as the Htc Pure a smaller less featured phone with no slide out keyboard! Samsung is about to release on At&t the i897 Captivate a Galaxy 5000 S series phone, withall the specs ip4, and more and its Android 2.1 upgradeable to the 2.2(froyo) with Adobe Flash 10! which blows the already plagued (signal loss while holding it in ur hand, and Steve Jobs official statement was oh well these things happen, errors in the retina display, the case shattering when dropped, etc….!) from release Iphone 4 away!!!! Fuck iphone, its a bullshit media hype job! Long live the smartphone kings Samsung (even if their cust serv. sucks)
July 3rd, 2010 at 11:03 am
A few things that are a must, to change on this 6.5 ROM. Limited rintone size, which was fixed in the Blackjack II, message sent notification, which I don’t know why they brought back, and a few small workable flaws.
Other than ringtone and messaging stuff, the phone seems to act well with the finger sliding menus and sensitivity.
For being an “outdated” phone, this update may help it a ton.
July 3rd, 2010 at 1:01 pm
@djaxim (and others) AFAIK this year upgrade is only for current iPhone owners, not all AT&T subscribers. To check dial #369* on your phone and AT&T will text you with your upgrade status
July 3rd, 2010 at 1:27 pm
Bummer – 6.5 is out but now my USB cable is not working
. Is it the cable or the phone, anyone have similar experience? Or know how to do an update using the SDHC card?
July 3rd, 2010 at 2:55 pm
Luckily found out that my phone is still in warranty (just), so a replacement is on its way.
Upgrading to 6.5 is no big deal as I just did a hard reset to tyr and fix the USB problem.
Looking forward to 6.5. Should keep me off an iPhone/Droid X/Evo for a while
July 3rd, 2010 at 6:32 pm
Looks like I’m stuck on the Axim for a little while longer. I tried pre-ordering the iphone4 the first day of preorders. My daughter ordered one and has received hers already. A friend at work ordered his a day or two later than I did and has received his already. I have heard nothing about mine. I think they lost my order. I do have a receipt though so I’ll have to go to the ATT store and complain to them. Unfortunately I’m stuck at home due to an injury and won’t be able to go there for about another 7 or 8 days. Maybe they’ll have plenty of phones available by then.
July 4th, 2010 at 12:11 am
Though I had posted in the past that the wait would be long and frustrating, I am glad to see it finally did arrive. Good luck!

For the built-in WM6.5 lock go into the registry
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shell\LockSc reen]
“Enable”=dword:0
change it from 0 to 1 and you’ll get the 6.5 lockscreen.

So, I am glad to see this update, FINALLY! Has anyone checked to see if teathering still works with this upgrade? That is the one feature that keeps me using (and will keep) this phone when I upgrade to a new phone. I love the epix and I’m disappointed that it was not kept up to date. Do you load this update on the phone to run it or run it on the computer with the phone connected? Has anyone tried this using Windows 7 or a 64 bit version of Windows?

is this an official 6.5 update?
July 5th, 2010 at 12:14 pm
So far the biggest con for me with this update (at least compared to trashcan’s rom) is not being able to rearrange the start menu. You can move an item to the top of the list, but you can’t move it around any where else you want.
That being said, this update is a must, especially if you have the id1 update. (gps fix)
July 5th, 2010 at 12:14 pm
did anyone tried the official update by samsung? need to hear some feed back before applying it.
July 5th, 2010 at 12:20 pm
J D, i haven’t updated to id1 update, would it be a good thing in applying this official 6.5?
July 5th, 2010 at 4:03 pm
How do you guys get it to download the update. Mine sits at the “Waiting for the device…” prompt. I have Trashcan’s ROM loaded, if that makes any difference.
I have already changed the connection mode from ActiveSync to Modem.
Thanks

Im trying to update my epix with the official 6.5 but im having some trouble with the usb driver. I tried installing and uninstalling it but it kept on saying that cant install driver cause there’s already installed for the device. Any work around for this? Thanks in advance
July 5th, 2010 at 5:11 pm
i think the 6.5 updater can’t seem to locate the USB modem even if its already installed…

Frank, on this website go to utilities and down the the registry editor and install. Plug in you phone and make sure it syncs with your computer. From there follow the tips above.
July 5th, 2010 at 11:20 pm
Thats how i uninstalled my usb driver, when my phone is connected and under modem mode on my epix connection settings. But when im installing the usb driver it kept saying that driver installation failed cause theres a driver installed for the device.

BTW, I also am doing this with Vista 64-bit
July 6th, 2010 at 7:39 am
my problem when trying to update my epix with the official 6.5 is my windows XP won’t detect my USB driver modem even if it is installed already.
July 6th, 2010 at 9:11 am
I had no problem installing on Windows 2000 (who knew my crappy 11 year old os at work would actually come in handy?)
Those of you having trouble on Vista/7, try right-clicking on the file and run as administrator. I have heard that helps. If not… I bet you can find someone with 32-bit XP who will let you use their computer. That seems to be the best bet.
—–
I use phm registry editor. Just google it and you’ll find it pretty easily.
——
From what I hear, even pre-ID1 phones benefit from this update, but I can’t speak for that personally. It might be good to wait a week or two to make sure some new issues don’t arise. (I installed ID1 after it had been out about a week because everything I saw said it was great.)
July 6th, 2010 at 11:25 am
Tyler – try a different USB port. I had the same issue under XP and that cured it. Also I did not have any luck running under Vista 64 bit. Ended up using an XP machine to complete.
The install software is a bit buggy and required some playing around with to get to run.
July 6th, 2010 at 12:13 pm
i have vista ultimate and there was always an error when detecting the phone…so, i ended up using a virtual machine (xp pro) on my vista machine…worked like a charm. on a side note, i’ve changed that registry value to enable the slide to unluck…doesn’t work.
July 6th, 2010 at 12:32 pm
this is what the installer is giving me an error “modem driver is not found on the system. please follow driver installation process, and then restart download.” i just check in the device manager (epix is connected to usb in modem mode) and saw that the driver is installed.
so i tried uninstalling the driver and installing it again and an error appears “SAMSUNG Mobile Modem driver was not installed succesfully (15) there is a driver installed for the device, please uninstall it first”. but im sure i uninstalled it already.
can someone help me on this matter. im on windows XP
July 6th, 2010 at 1:19 pm
Just to let you know – I have a pre-ID1 phone (never installed it) and a Window 7 PC and was able to successfully upgrade to 6.5. So far it works great (I had trouble at first with Windows 7 until I used a differenct USB port and it ran well). So keep trying, its worth it, IMHO.
July 6th, 2010 at 4:27 pm
Is anyone else having trouble with Microsoft My Phone? When I click on it, it says I have to do the mandatory update but it gives me an error when I try to install. I’ve also tried installing from marketplace as well as downloading the cab, but no luck.
Any ideas?

July 6th, 2010 at 8:36 pm
got it to work, used my XP 32-bit to do it, works great!
July 6th, 2010 at 11:04 pm
frank, I don’t think you can do that with the default windows lock screen. you’ll have to get s2u to do it.
July 7th, 2010 at 12:19 am
To get it to install for me, I used the USB Connection Mode “Mass storage”. Would not work in ActiveSync Mode.
July 7th, 2010 at 11:53 am
about smartlock, it seems its not compatible with a 320×320 screen resolution
July 7th, 2010 at 12:26 pm

Sorry to sound like such a noob … (and I’m not!) but I still don’t see the 6.5 lock screen. I’ve tried the reg edit as well as the Samrtlock program and neither change what I’m seeing. Anything I should check?
July 7th, 2010 at 10:14 pm
icant get this to install. ive changed the phone settings to mass storage, modem, active sync, etc and none works. ive tried on my XP virtual machine also. it just sits there waiting. iv tried all ports, tried uninstalling, etc. any ideas guys?
July 8th, 2010 at 12:05 am
I’ve also spent a couple of hours trying to upload the ROM without sucess. I can’t get the application to detect the phone, no matter what. I installed the modem drivers and the device shows up in the device manager, but the update application just sits idle. The only thing that comes to my mind is that I’m using a non-OEM cable and maybe it is missing some serial pins or something, but I doubt it. If you get it to work please describe the process!

how to make smartlock slide to unlock make a sounds when unlocking it? mine sounds on the first time but it suddenly doesn’t makes a sound anymore…
July 8th, 2010 at 5:09 am
i just solved it, its in the lower part of the smartlock setting, too bad its not compatible with the epix screen resolution can’t barely see it
July 8th, 2010 at 9:05 am
danish – correct myphone now works on my phone.
Steve – not to further accuse you of being a noob… but are you sure 6.5 install entirely? If you did the reg edit there is no reason for the new lock screen not to appear.
For those still not getting it to work… make sure you are using an official samsung usb cord, I had a problem with that when I did the ID1 (too bad I figured it out, but that’s another story)
Make sure you are using the usb port in the back of your computer, because technically the convenience plugs in the front is a hub.
July 8th, 2010 at 12:22 pm
badcat160 – i used the link and everything’s working fine now. I installed using my Win7 32 bit laptop and I ran the Vista exe file with Vista compatibility. The installation worked fine. My only current problem is that Marketplace isn’t authenticating against its servers but that looks like its a Marketplace issue. the device is actually performing better than before, faster and more responsive.
July 8th, 2010 at 12:55 pm
marketplace error: We encountered an error while trying to reach the Windows Marketpace server.
for a while it wouldn’t even start the app, now it’s started but it won’t install MyPhone cuz of this error. i have tried the following:
1. made sure proxy isnt enabled
2. made sure 3g data is connected (i can even check emails)
3. full bars
any ideas?

July 8th, 2010 at 4:40 pm
danish – what reg edit program are you using?
July 8th, 2010 at 10:23 pm
Well its official the Epix is not longer even on the microsoft upgrade list anymore, they finally gave up.
July 8th, 2010 at 10:59 pm
dsntree… what in the world is wrong with you… have you not seen the last 50+ messages discussing the official release of 6.5 by Samsung and AT&T for the epix on July 2nd…
July 8th, 2010 at 11:03 pm
I am debating the upgrade… my phone is currently pre ID1 and I am not having any major issues.
Can anyone say whether the 6.5 upgrade fixed the lack of being able to surf at true 3G speeds? I am still waiting to see what all has been fixed and what they might have broke… sounds like GSM was fixed. How about the message notification LED… does it stay on even when the display is off if there is a missed call. There was so many features that this phone has never had working correctly from day one. I am curious as to whether 6.5 ROM release fixed any of these old issues.
July 9th, 2010 at 3:47 am
if i upgrade to 6.5 and dont like it can i downgrade back to 6.1?
July 9th, 2010 at 8:16 am
JD, first I tried something called Mobile Registry Editor. It connected to the registry easily but I got access denied messages when I tried to apply a change. Then I got the PHM editor after seeing that mentioned on this blog. However, this one just refuses to install – keeps telling me there was an error during the install process.
I’m thinking maybe I should get something like S2U2. I’ve already installed my SPB Mobile Shell – it actually seems to work better on 6.5. The phone overall seems to have gotten quicker.
July 9th, 2010 at 9:08 am
That is weird the Epix got left off the update page. i guess samsung didn’t let microsoft in time.
s2u2 is a great program, just eats up a lot of memory (which is a premium on my phone). Wish i could help you with the reg edit, but i have no idea. i assume you did a soft reset and redownloaded the .cab. A hard reset might do the trick if you’re willing to do that.
dustin – the id1 update would probably put 6.1 back on your phone, but then you would have all the problems again. you could always use trashcan’s clean 6.1 rom if you really didn’t like 6.5.
July 9th, 2010 at 9:26 am
JD, do you mean re-downloading of which .cab? PHM?
When I flashed the phone with 6.5, it formatted everything of course. and i followed instructions to format again to make sure it’s clean before i started downloading my apps from marketplace and the install of mobile shell.
you’re right about the S2U2. i’ve used it on this phone with Win 6.1 and the memory was a problem. I would run out of battery quicker too which is why i uninstalled it last time.
July 9th, 2010 at 1:00 pm
Unless Windows Phone 7 is really awesome, it’s going to be difficult to get me to switch back. Android is just so much better. I haven’t completely tossed the Epix out the window, now that the GPS is working again, I’ll be using it for Geotagging purposes.
July 16th, 2010 at 8:02 pm
Many thanks with regard to the information, I am truly looking forward to the Samsung Epic 4G, even though I have constantly been pretty interested in gadgets, for a long time I have already been searching for my very first smartphone and I did not get it yet. The reasons are quite simple: each and every couple of months there is a revolution in the industry (tough to come to a decision!) and prices here in Brazil are very abusive. Maybe I would enter this world in excellent style with a Samsung Epic 4G. I hope so.
July 16th, 2010 at 9:39 pm
Thanks for the nice article, I’m excitedly waiting for my Samsung Captivate through T-Mobile as soon as they technically confirm that they’re carrying it. I was in my neighborhood store today and experienced a hold of their own dummy device. It looks as well as feels much better than I thought. This is going to be the phone to get. Never mind the iPhone 4g, the Galaxy S is where it’s at. As for me, I’m upgrading from a Samsung Pixon after an 18 month contract and am happy to have ultimately settled on the Galaxy S. The decision process was fraught with many, many hours of investigation on the world wide web. I was close to an HTC Desire and even closer to an Xperia X10 but then, from out of nowhere, I came across the GSMArena.com review of the Galaxy S and it just does everything so well.
July 20th, 2010 at 12:24 pm
Well I’ve been running 6.5 on my epix for about week and a half…since July 7th. so far it’s working alright. I finally had my old 6.1 with the id1 update working like a champ and crashes were reduced to 1 to 2 per month.
At the moment I have it working pretty good, I think the majority of my day one issues were from using my backups and restoring my Text Messaging DB…It didn’t work too well..After deleting all my texts it is working fine. GPS works great, though I did have to go to the windows directory and click on the gpstest.exe or whatever to initialize it first…I’m guessing to have a quazi location from gprs and then it initiates the gps chip. Either way..it seems to work fine for my use…a geocaching app.
Cons:
Battery life is shorter!
choose between clock or battery on taskbar…not both
a tad less customization than 6.1
and possibly….used way more storage memory than previous version.
I only have opera, basic gps app, and wm6_rdp(remote desktop connector)…Same I had on my previous phone…but I had to uninstall the .cabs when I was done with each file and I am now using my card for pictures instead of phone memory.
program 55.17 free out of 97.36 storage 10.76 free out of 126.77
bloatware…it came with a few extras…I may swing by cingular sometime and see if they can remove some of this crap…Why would I use ATT navigator when I have Google, I want it Gone…Let me know if you guys have a easy way to remove programs I don’t want or will never use so I can get back some space!
Pros:
better usability thumbing the touchscreen does most of my functions instead of trying to hit a tiny drag bar
no crashes because of conflicts with messaging icon/light etc.
My biggest pet peeve with 6.5 is the lack of me being able to put exactly the same things I had on my today screen back on there. And I have no Battery Icon…I want to be able to see the time if I am using media player or some such. But I can’t.
I may try to run some programs that will address a few of these issues if my memory allows like using the ibattery from http://thewingster.com/freetools.aspx
July 21st, 2010 at 3:32 pm
Many of you who are running Windows XP are having problems fully upgrading your Samsung Epix.
Apparently, the PDA portion of the phone gets updated, but the phone part does not. You can see this
under Settings >> System >> and click on Version. The phone version and pda version do not match. This
typically occurs because the phone hangs during the upgrade process. The phone and the installation
program stops responding where it says “changeUSB ok” and on the top part it says “Succeed COM #”. This
is a failed installation. Now the user is forced to reboot the phone by removing the battery. The phone
boots up fine and appears to work okay; however, only the pda part was updated, the phone part still has
the old version. The following instructions eliminates this problem and ensures a full upgrade of your
Epix both PDA and PHONE. Good luck, and remember I take no responsibility for any damage or problems
caused by using this tutorial. Good Luck and Enjoy!!
First, Install the Samsung Modem Driver
Open ActiveSync 4.5 and go to File >> connection settings >> and uncheck Allow USB connections
then connect the phone to pc using data cable
On the samsung phone go to USB Connection Mode and select Modem
On the PC go to control panel >> system >> device manager
go under modems and double click on Samsung Mobile Modem

then press ok to apply changes. Press OK under Samsung Mobile Modem Properties window
Now under Device Manager go to Ports (COM & LPT) and double click on Communications (COM 1)

COM 1 that is not in use. ex. COM4 >> Press ok to apply changes and under the General tab of
Communications Port (COM#) Properties go under Device usage: and select disable (Do not use this device)
then press ok. Now follow on the samsung phone to go Settings >> connections >> USB to PC and uncheck

At the same time as I really like a bodily keyboard, after managing the Samsung Captivate for roughly quarter-hour, it is hard to head back. At this time I am debating whether or not to visit Verizon for the Droid X, cross to Sprint for the EVO, or stay with AT&T for the Captivate…choices, decisions.

Has anyone figured how to get the Battery Icon back onto the status bar on top?
I can’t believe that they took it off!! What is the point of doing that? Nothing else on that bar changed
