hacks and mods Using Your Samsung Epix as a Wireless Modem

Using Your Samsung Epix as a Wireless Modem

Download

Here’s an awesome hack for all you Epix owners with data plans (unlimited data is recommended for use with this hack)! You can now tether your Epix to your desktop/laptop and use it as a high-speed modem. If you’ve in 3G range the access speeds are nothing to scoff at, and even the Edge network is very usable.

FYI – tethering without an expensive tethering plan from AT&T is technically against their terms of use (read the section Prohibited and Permissible Uses). AT&T will probably not notice unless you move a TON of data through yout AT&T “unlimited” data plan account (ex. bittorrenting using your Epix). Personally I don’t abuse it and when I do tether its when I’m out and about and don’t have access to WiFi, so i’m primarily checking e-mail and surfing the web — which moves the same amount of data as I would using my Epix.

Update: Reportedly you get 5GB of bandwidth every month from AT&T.

This hack may not work correctly if you are using Slide 2 Unlock 2 (S2U2).

Anyhow, enough with the disclaimer, here’s all you have to do:

  1. This works via USB with Windows XP or Vista. It also works with OS X over Bluetooth (thanks Mike!).
  2. Application unlock your Samsung Epix
  3. Download and install this hack
  4. Go to Start > Settings > Connections tab > Internet Sharing
  5. Sytem > Internet Connection Sharing

  6. Select the PC Connection method
    • USB (This requires the Epix USB connection cable, this method is recommended)
    • Bluetooth PAN (This requires your computer/laptop to be Bluetooth enabled)
  7. Select “MEdia Net” as the Network Connection
  8. Click the “Connect” soft-key
  9. Your computer should auto-detect the that your Epix is trying to share. You should see a progress window that looks like:
    Internet Connection Sharing Progress Window
  10. After your computer automatically configures itself, you can now access the internet through your Epix’s data connection!

And as a bonus, your Samsung Epix’s battery will charge while it acts as your wireless modem (if select USB and not Bluetooth in step 5)!

  1. Dan Says:

Is this much different from the samsung modem application that comes with the Epix CD (and there is an update for this modem application at the samsung website)? I’ve installed the cab and it works great. I saw the responses you were getting on the AT&T forum and want to say I for one appreciate this cab as it made life a lot easier!

  2. david Says:

Dan – this is different than the modem app on the Samsung Epix CD. The Epix CD has drivers that let your computer use your Epix as a modem — the problem is AT&T has disabled the Epix to be used as a modem unless you have one of their special tethering plans. This hack enabled your Epix to connect to your computer (which is using the CD drivers) and have your computer use it as a modem.. does that make sense?

  3. matter1212 Says:

Okay.. so i do not have an unlimited data plan, but i was wondering if it is possible to connect to a wifi source, and then use that wireless internet through your phone in order to use the internet on a computer. for example, i have a desktop that is without a modem and i am currently using an ethernet cable. Is it possible to connect to wifi via the epix, and then plug the phone into the computer and use this as the internet source? thanks

  4. david Says:

I’ve been playing around and I can’t figure out how to tether the Epix just using WiFi… :( Every time i try to use the Internet Connection Sharing tool it tells me that my Phone must be turned on (I turned it off to ensure that only WiFi was going to be used).

  5. cambo0019 Says:

hack installed but when i try to connect via bluetooth or usb it says the remote party has ended this connection, why is that? also i only have 1 option in this window and that is to connect to either bluetooth or usb, i can’t select media net or of the sorts. wth is going on?

  6. Chuck Says:

The best option is to buy and install WMWiFiRouter (http://global.wmwifirouter.com/consumer/). This awesome app turns your Epix into a 3G wireless access point. Just like tethering, but without the cable and multiple people can get online at once. A great way to let the whole family surf the web from their laptops while driving down the road or stuck in an airport!

  7. david Says:

cambo, Make sure that the hack is installed by going to Start > Settings > System tab > Remove Programs and make sure “MySamsungEpix ICS Hack” is listed. Then restart your Epix and try again. Also, make sure that your “Phone” is enabled in the Wireless Manager (Tap your 3G icon in your top-bar, and press the “wireless manager” link). The error you’re getting is the one that occurs when the hack is not installed.

  8. cambo0019 Says:

yessir, thanks a lot homie….going to try that ASAP

  9. geoff Says:

I agree that WMWiFiRouter is a great application, but I can’t get the WEP encryption to work. Anyone have any luck?

  10. Tyler Says:

    Works GREAT! Thanks!

  11. Chris Says:

I understand how this hack works and have it installed and use it at my house where I have no internet connection. My question is if AT&T notices alot of data plan usage is there any way they could prove this is what I am doing? If so what could they do? I am no longer on contract with them so I guess I could just leave them If they give me a hassle.

  12. astokie Says:

trying to install the hack – do I install on my computer or my epix? thanks for the help

  13. david Says:

astokie, Install it on your Samsung Epix.. its a CAB file. CAB files are for phones.

  14. david Says:

Chris, I’m not privy to AT&T’s inner-circle so I don’t know how they determine if youre doing this. From my understand of how ICS/tethering works with mobile phones, AT&T probably would have a VERY difficult time proving you were tethering your phone. The only thing I can see would be if you were using programs that used non-standard ports/protocols and that moved alot of data — of course you could always say you found an application that used those ports and protocols for your phone. …

So, they short answer is, AT&T probably can’t prove anything, but there is a small chance they could. As long as youre just surfing the web and checking email I think youll be fine though. I’d avoid downloading large files (several hundred+ MB).

  15. long Says:

is there a website from where I can download the hack directly to my phone? Thanks

  16. david Says:

long – sure, you can download it the hack to your phone from this site… ?

  17. Chris Says:

Thanks David your time is appreciated.

  18. Fred Says:

Thanks for taking the time to make this site and tutorial. The CAB works great.

  19. Mr Cool Says:

The application unlocker didn’t work for me. I did find this: http://www.windowsmobilecool.com/2008/11/howto-internet-sharing-work-att-fuze-sprint-touch-pro-htc-touch-diamond-samsung-epix/ and it worked perfectly! Hope it works out for you guys too

  20. Russell Says:

In case anyone is wondering if bluetooth tethering to a Windows 7 machine works (build 7000), it does! I did a straight upgrade of my Vista machine to Windows 7 and found that the PAN connectoid for my phone when it was still running Vista was gone. I created a new one, and had no probems. I did not test USB, but I can’t believe it wouldn’t work if BT does.

Unfortunately, I found that Windows 7 still wasn’t ready for my 3G card – an Option GT MAX 3.6 card. Windows 7 detected it and installed drivers, and the AT&T Communication Manager found the network and appeared ready to connect, but CLICKING connect did nothing – just reset the card & Communication Manager redetected it, found the network again, and was ready to connect again. Bummer. I installed the newest Communication Manager and saw the same behavior. Had to roll back to Vista as the data card is critical part of my job. I also found that a technet blog from the Windows Mobility team had a small-ish list of cards currenty supported under Windows 7 Beta 1. Oh well! I found that Windows 7 is really, really nice, boots much faster than Vista, and I’ve already put it on 3 (back down to 2 now!) machines.

  21. david Says:

Mr. Cool – That is exactly this hack does… It deletes the ForceCellConnection key on your Samsung Epix.

  22. AJ Says:

ok so i went on my epix and went to the download the “application unlock” cab thing on my phone and it installs and i found it in the folder etc…but i don’t see what it does…when i go to the internet and sharing tab under connections there is no MEdia net option…i don’t understand!

  23. Jay123 Says:

OK…I think I need a hand here…I installed the unlocker and rebooted phone, then installed the hack and rebooted…I have the USB option set to modem…I installed the samsung modem drivers on my laptop and followed the instructions above, but my pc does not auto detect that the Epix is trying to share and the only thing is does is try to install a driver for the hardware (which it never finds)…any thoughts out there? What am I missing?

  24. david Says:

jay, are you running XP or Vista? Also, you are hitting the “Connect” softkey in internet connection sharing before trying to share your internet connection with your computer – right? It sounds like youre doing everything correctly but your computer is having problems finding the drivers…?

  25. david Says:

AJ – did you install the Application Unlocker AND the Wireless Modem hack on your Samsung Epix? They are two different things.

  26. Jay123 Says:

im running XP Pro with SP3…i did hit the connect soft key, than option then changes to “disconnect” on the phone…both the unlocker and hack are installed with a reboot in between…i even dowloaded the latest epix modem drivers from samsung’s website and installed them…no luck yet…its like the PC just doesnt see it as an external modem for some reason…im wondering now if it is because of SP3?

  27. Jay123 Says:

ok…I tried it on my buddy’s vista pc and it worked fine, but still nothing here…i can see the device listed under modems in the hardware manager, but i think for some reason I’m not getting that remote NDIS Enabled notification…I think I just may be out of luck with this XP machine…at least I know it does work…

  28. Linda Says:

I connect my Epix to my computer and it seems to work fine for a few minutes, but then, after 2 or 3 minutes it’s like it disconnects from it. It keeps charging, but it’s like it keeps disconnecting and re-connecting every few minutes. More like, it stops detecting it for a minute and then detects it again. It works for a bit and then does it again. So, I just tried this, it worked FINE! but since it stops detecting my Epix, I get disconnected. Can anyone tell me what’s wrong?

  29. david Says:

Linda, do you have any sort of Firewall software running on your computer? Also, I assume your Samsung Epix’s data connection is solid this entire time, correct? This sounds very strange .. Do you have a lot of other programs installed on your Epix?

  30. Linda Says:

I had Firewall on, turned it off after you mentioned it, but it still did it. What do you mean by solid? And not really, I’ve only installed Opera, a player called TCPMP, Slide 2 Unlock and the rest come with it. I tried uninstalling Windows Mobile Center, and realized that was noobish of me cause that wouldn’t get rid of my Epix installation on my computer. Could you maybe help me with that so that it reinstalls again? Maybe that would help.

  31. Linda Says:

Well, it hasn’t done it for a while now. Maybe the firewall was it? Though it still did it one more time after I turned it off but it’s been half an hour and it hasn’t gotten disconnected.

  32. Linda Says:

ok, so i discovered that as long as the backlight is on, it doesn’t get disconnected. but then it’s supposed to be charging it too, but since i have to keep the backlight on (which I do by moving the mouse thing), it doesn’t really charges.

  33. Steve Says:

Linda I’m having the same issue. I almost wonder if slide 2 unlock is the culprit. Does anyone else have slide 2 unlock installed, and not seeing this issue?

  34. Steve Says:

So far so good. I disabled slide 2 unlock and I’m still connected after 15 min. I was getting disconnected every 5 min. before. There are recommended settings for slide 2 unlock on this site. I’ll probably try those to see if maybe I just have a setting wrong.

  35. Linda Says:

I lost my cable, haven’t been able to find it for a few days now. But thank you so much! I’ll try that as soon as I find it.

  36. AJ Says:

sorry about my lack of response, I am used to the blackjack II which had “medianet” instead of having att behind it, my mistake. Also, does it matter if you select media net for att ims?

  37. Jay Says:

    How much is too much?
I am wondering if anyone has an estimate of the amount of data that would alert ATT as over-use of Epix as a modem assuming you have unlimitted Data service. Thanks.

  38. david Says:

Jay, I don’t think anyone really knows – I stick to visiting Web pages and checking my e-mail when I tether.. My rule is if I can do it in a web browser, i could do it on my phone – so they really shouldn’t be able to say anything – who are they to say that I dont use my phone a lot for surfing the web, emailing and IMing.

I do NOT run bittorrents over my tethered connection or download massive files (50mb+) .. though its funny because I have downloaded 50+ mb files to my Samsung Epix before I figure out how to tether (I need a couple large files for work and I didnt have WiFi where I was for the weekend, so I downloaded the files to my phone and copied them to my laptop via microSD)

  39. Ben Fitts Says:

This is such a huge tip. Thank you.

The other day I was trying to do a demonstration of my web site for a client. Their firewall was blocking some ports we needed to access. So I pulled out my Epix and connected my laptop. I was able to do the demo AND sign up the customer on the spot.

  40. 337 Says:

Hack works like a champ, now attempting to have epix connect at 3G only. Any suggestions appreciated.

  41. Mike Says:

Followed directions as posted and it worked perfectly the first time! Thanks!
Internet sharing was buried way down in the windows folder in the original BJ, but it worked fine. Now it’s out in the open, but they disabled it. Kind of funny I think.

Also, this DOES work on OS X – with bluetooth!

    Initial set up:
First install the hack (step 3 on the instructions on this site). Next, pair your phone and computer. Turn the on bluetooth on your phone and set to “visible.” On your Mac, go to system preferences>bluetooth>set up new device, and follow the promps (look for “any device,” and the Epix should show up as SGH-i907 if you have it set to visible).

Now, anytime you want to use internet sharing:
Set up an internet sharing session on your phone as described on this website (steps 4-7 above, choosing “bluetooth” in the “PC connection” drop-down menu). If your Mac bluetooth is on (mine always is), you should have a bluetooth icon up at the top of your screen, near the wireless icon. Click on it, and then click on “Join Network on SGH-i907.” Once the little dots appear across your bluetooth icon, you’re on-line! 3G + bluetooth + the Epix’s processor speed = faster internet than many public WiFi hotspots!

  42. Mike Says:

By the way – David this site is awesome! For someone like me who doesn’t have a lot of time to surf the net looking for hacks and mods and then sorting them all out, it’s a lifesaver. I had considered exchanging my Epix for an iPhone, but after finding your site I decided to settle in to my new Epix.

Also, can you re-post detailed instructions on getting TomTom Navigator 6 to run on the Epix? I saw your post on another site but it was a little confusing. Thanks!

  43. david Says:

Mike, thanks for the kind words! im glad the site is helpful!!! Unfortunately I dont own Tom Tom Navigator 6 so I have no idea how to get it to run… that software is alittle of my price range :( I just use GoogleMaps!

  44. david Says:

Mike – awesome find! thanks for testing it out on OS X!

  45. Jan Says:

Help??? I have tried installing this hack multiple times. Restarted the phone. Check the “remove programs” and the hack isn’t installed. The hack install “appears” to install correctly, yet I don’t get the “Network Connection” option. I’ve read all the comments but am still missing something here. Any ideas? Heading out of town this weekend and the phone is the only possible internet connection I’ll have. Thanks!

  46. david Says:

Jan, did you application unlock your Samsung Epix?

  47. DavidZ Says:

I am hving some issues as well. I installed everything per instructions and everything seems great. My PC (Lenovo T61 / WinXP+SP3) sees the Epix and has created a “Windows Mobile-based Internet Sharing Device”. I am connecting to MediaNet just fine and holding the connection, but when I try to access the Internet I have no connection. I realized that the Sharing Device in “Network Connections” on my PC is not enabled. So I try to enable it and I get the popup with “Connection failed!”. Anyone else seeing this or am I missing something?

Also to Mike: I just got my Tomtom NAV6 loaded and working fine. Make sure you have already contacted Tomtom support and transferred your activation to the new phone or it will not work. You will need the product code (little credit card looking thing in inside cover of the DVD) and the device code (this is tricky: after tomtom starts, tap lower right corner and see the “Version 6.010″ button, then tap the button and see the version and activation code, right below language selection: xxxxx xxxxx).

Tomtom support can then transfer over your activation for you. Good luck!
    DaveZ

  48. Mike Says:

    DavidZ,
I get transferred in circles at TomTom, then I got disconnected!
How does it run? Mine loads super slow, then says “no valid gps signal” even though Windows Live and Google maps can both lock on to 15 satellites. I’ve read other places it is because of how the Epix uses the cell phone towers to get an initial fix, and that TomTom can’t do that. Did TomTom do anything to your software, like a patch or something? Or are you using a bluetooth GPS device?

  49. qagmire Says:

Is this hack necessary?I just put phone i modem mode, disable active sync, internet sharing push connect and get connected.

  50. david Says:

qamire, if you tether your Samsung Epix in the way you described you wont be able to charge it while youre using it as a modem.

  51. Emil Says:

Awesome hack, I use it almost daily at work to stream radio, remote desktop, iTunes etc.

Anyway, how do I make a shortcut or assign a button for it? I have tried to locate a “exe” file associated with the app. but can not.

So for right now I have to go “Settings -> Connections” but I hoped for a shorter solution…..

    Thanks

    Emil

  52. Emil Says:

Never mind, I found the files I where looking for…….

    “\Windows\IntShrUI.exe” and “\Windows\IntShrUI.lnk”

    Thanks again

    Emil

  53. Lh Says:

Using this to connect my Mac to my Epix no worky. How do I find out what IP address I am getting (if I get one) via the Epix?

  54. Emil Says:

Lh, I don’t know if this help…. but

On my XP, checking the Network Connection Details, I found that the Epix modem have

    IP Address 192.168.0.102
    Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway 192.168.0.1
    DHCP Server 192.168.0.1
    DNS Server 192.168.0.1

  55. vox Says:

    Works great, thanks!

For those having problem, install the unlock first, reboot the phone. Then install this hack, again reboot the phone, you should be good to go after that.

  56. Cm Says:

I LOVE this, works perfect! Thanks, I have unlimited data plan will be worth it now.

  57. Felicien Says:

Not sure if this is related, but I find I can no longer reply to POP3 e-mails via the accounts I have set up after I installed this hack. I’m tempted to uninstall the hack and see what happens and probably will unless something dawns on me quickly.

I’m really hoping it works, cuz otherwise it’s Hard Reset time for me, followed by an hour and a half of tweaking.

I wish some of the hacks on this site were a bit less problematic. Not very professional for those of us who actually use our devices for work.

  58. Felicien Says:

Follow-up to recent comment. I ended up deleting the hack, but there was no change with the malfunctioning e-mail account. One worked, the other didn’t.

So I ended up reinstalling the hack, had to reassign two of the Buttons (Calendar and E-mail) and when I found that one of my e-mail accounts was still failing, I simply deleted it and set it up again. It now works fine, but admittedly I’m not sure what will happen if I use the phone as a modem again.

But even if it causes an e-mail account to fail, it’s still worth the trade-off.

  59. ageorge Says:

Thank you so much. I tried in vain for hours until I reread all the posts and realized that I have to install the app unlock cab and the using epix as modem cab. Works perfectly.

  60. Dru Says:

I downloaded the Unlocker CAB file to my computer and then placed it on my MicroSD card. I put the card back in the phone and used File Explorer to find the file. When I clicked on the phone it changed screens and a status bar showed up. It took just a second or two and then a message stating that the software was successfully installed was displayed. I also did this after placing the file in MyDocuments and got the same results. Now I cannot find any evidence that the software was installed. There is no new icon or anything.

Do I have to restart my phone for the software to show up? Even when I go to the System tab and click on Remove Programs, the software program doesn’t show up. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

  61. Peter Says:

Hi. I lost some of the programs on my SGH i607, example, my phone was set to have an alarm, it still does but now i can not access nor even change the time of the alarm that should go off. That page cannot be seen anywhere.
appreciate any help, thoughts, and suggestions for my device. Thanks guys.

  62. Todd Says:

Thanks for the hack, it worked great.

  63. Kyle Says:

Am I missing something? When I click download if only gives me a .xml file. Where can I find the .cab? Any help would be great!

  64. JRo Says:

This is the coolest. Thanks so much for the application. This will come in very handy.

    Keep up the good job!

  65. JRo Says:

    Kyle,

If you have the CAB file, just move it over to your I907 without opening on your pc. Once you find it on you device you can then install it.

    Good Luck!

  66. djaxim Says:

I downloaded the cab’s to unlock and to setup ICS, then both installed OK. I set the Epix USB to “modem”, opened ICS and set it to USB and Medianet. I plugged it into my Vista computer and Vista installed 3 or 4 different drivers, one of which was “Samsung UCM modem”. I can click “connect” on the Epix ICS and it says it is connectec, but nothing works on the Vista computer. How can I convince the computer to actually use the phone as a modem?

  67. Kyle Says:

I don’t have the .cab file which is what I am looking for? When I click download I get an .xml file. JRo where can I get the .cab file? The “download” link gives me the .xml. Thanks, again.

  68. djaxim Says:

When I “mouse over” the DOWNLOAD text, at the bottom of my browser screen it gives the link name, and it ends in .cab. If I click on the DOWNLOAD text, my browser asks if I want to open or save the file, and says it is of type .cab. This is doing it tonight on my PC. When I did it last night with my Epix using the Opera browser, it asked me if I wanted to save the file and it saved it as a .cab file.

  69. Kyle Says:

Got it! Thanks for the help everyone. Great hack :-)

  70. Derron Says:

I have installed the hack and rebooted the phone just to make sure however within the internet sharing i still only have a drop down for pc connection. I dont have an option for the media section. Also when I connect I get disconnected from att saying remote party has disconnected the session.

  71. Anthony Says:

Help please. I have downloaded everything as said, but when I click connect, status says check usb cable connection. Any ideas?

  72. david Says:

    anthony – Vista or XP?

  73. Daniel Says:

This has worked perfectly for me until yesterday. When I press “Connect” now, my computer lets out three rapid low beeps and the “Check USB cable connection” comes up. I am on XP.

  74. Stuart Says:

It’s stated that it will charge my phone, but it doesn’t. After I unplug from my laptop my battery is drained. Could I have possibly done something wrong or has anyone else had this problem?

  75. goderaj Says:

This all works fine for me! All but this: My keypad stays lit up all the time while using connection sharing through my Bluetooth PAN! Not good for my already constantly draining battery! I have the settings set to turn it off, yet they don’t do the job! Anyone know a work around?

  76. angela Says:

I downloaded the hack and it works great via USB option, but when I try to use bluetooth option, my phone can’t connect to the network. I have the phone connected correctly through my computer’s bluetooth settings, and I have bluetooth option and media net option selected, but my phone just keeps trying to connect to the network but can’t. Please advise

  77. larry Says:

Ok I need some help I got the ics working and my laptop can get online but after a few minutes when the screen goes dim it stops working and I don’t have the slide to unlock installed on my epix?

  78. Dave Says:

I have ICS working with my Epix and my lpatop running Windows XP. This works great!!

    Now for the real challenge:
I work with embedded PCs running Windows CE 5.0 (my company manufactures these devices) and I would like to connect my Epix to these embedded PCs to show the different functions available to customers, with an Internet connection. When I enable ICS on the Epix and plug in the USB connector to the Windows CE PC, I get a window popup stating that the USB DEVICE UNRECOGNIZED and asking to please type the name of the driver in the entry box.

When I connect using my laptop (Windows XP) it is using the remote NDIS (rndismpx.sys) driver and the USB 802.3 (usb8023x.sys) driver to connect the Epix and establish a Windows Mobile-based Internat Connection Sharing Device #2.

The question is this: Does anyone know of Windows CE rndismpx.sys driver and usb8023x.sys driver for download? And just to make things even more difficult, I need the drivers for both x86 and ARM platforms.

    Any help is most appreciated!

    –Dave

  79. Grub Says:

Anyone tried using this on a PS3 for a modem?

  80. Eddie Says:

FYI – I use to have a Cingular 8xxx that did this sraight out of the box (even had some store reps tell me I was wrong & it was not possible) so thought all these type of phones could be used as modems. Imagine my surprise. Phone support finally explained it to me.
But as far as data amounts, I was tether streaming video for hours a day without any haggles from Att.

  81. Conor Says:

im having the same problem as Dru.

ive tried multiple times to install this file, and so far it has not worked.

ive restarted my phone afterword, and ive looked in the Remove Programs list.

    Any ideas?

  82. charlie Says:

I finally got it working after many hours. The website and comments above are hard to follow. Essentials are that first the unlocker.cab has to be downloaded to the epix and installed; then the MySamsungEpixICS Hack. cab has to be downloaded to the epix and installed; (presumably ActiveSync is already installed on the epix; then set it to use as modem). Then ActiveSync has to be downloaded from Microsoft website and installed on the laptop (if not already installed); then then samsung epix modem files have to be downloaded from the samsung website and installed on the laptop (there is a file for pre-install); then when connecting the epix to the laptop usb the installation of the epix as modem will be executed and completed on the laptop. Only after all of the foregoing will the internet sharing (pc connection-usb; network connection MediaNet) work.

I then also installed and tried the wmwifirouter application. It is available for a 21-day trial without THE $29 purchase, which is advisable because it warns certain laptops have problems, and some epix problems have been reported. It worked fine using the cellular to wifi option and connected by usb cable. So far it also seems to perform better than the ICS hack option as far as web sites being found and loading faster. So it looks like both should be tried as only one may work depending on your hardware.

  83. Fred Says:

Will this hack work if I’m running WM6.5?

DOES THIS WORK FOR THE SAMSUNG PROPEL PRO? if not, can u direct me in the right way?

  85. David Says:

I have installed the CAB file on my Epix but I do not have the media net tab below the PC Connection:USB . When I hit the soft ket “connect” it connnects for a second and then I get a box that pops up saying ‘ The remote party has ended this connection’.

    What am I doing wrong?

  86. David Says:

If I go into Remove Programs the CAB isn’t listed.

  87. AJ Says:

I finally just gave up and am using wmwifi. I did get tethering to work but it wasn’t as good as wmwifi. As far as wep encryption goes (for sharing 3G over wifi) they are working on it for the epix. there are also a few bugs (one version thought the epix was the omnia and tried to install wifi drivers for that) but have pretty much been fixed. give the free trial a go, you won’t be dissappointed

  88. chain Says:

so I got the 2 hacks downloaded 2 my epix, they show up in the remove programs list, I get the correct screen, like the one above, in the instructions, the epix software is not installed, because my laptop is old & doesn’t have the correct adobe software, so I can’t install it anyway, but when I try to use my epix as a modem it won’t work, my os is xp so I really can’t seem to see where the problem is coming from. please, some pointer or advice.
    thank you.

  89. KJ Says:

Great Fix. Thanks everybody. It works like a charm.

  90. Jesse Scott Says:

I have a similar problem that others have had with Windows XP (it says Check USB connection, and the computer attempts to install drivers unsuccessfully). On Vista machines, I just plug in the phone and connect (without installing anything special on the Vista machine).

I tried installing the drivers that came with the phone to no avail.

Has anyone figured out the XP problem yet?

  91. Tim Says:

Thanks guys…. It was awesome. I am now able to use my epix as a cell/ evdo card. It was a simple setup.

  92. JoeD Says:

I was able to unlock and run the tethering program on my Epix. The Epix seems to be working , but my laptop does not “see” the phone. Do I need to do something on my laptop in order to see my phone? I am using XP on my laptop. Thanks!

  93. Matty-Anne Says:

I did everything right and this worked perfectly for a New York minute. The second time I used it I got nothing, the phone connected fine to the computer and was charging, but I got no connection to the internet. The networks and sharing center showed connection, as well, but not internet. I thought maybe it was my location, but when I went home it was still the same. Can att ’see’ if we’ve downloaded this hack and then block it somehow? I tried the firewall, like Linda, and still nothing.

  94. Matty-Anne Says:

Oh yes, and I’m using Windows 7.

  95. Daniel Says:

When a person installs this hack, does it void the warranty on the phone?

  96. George Says:

Does this work with trashcan’s wm 6.5?

I go to start-settings-connections, but then there is no option to selection that says PC connections and media net.

    Help?

  97. George Says:

    n/m found it

  98. Mark Says:

    Worked first time. Beautiful!

  99. DD Dave Says:

I have been using the epix as a Modem with Vista and it worked great. Since upgrading laptop to Windows 7, I have not been abble to tether. Does anyone have any info or help for me?

  100. Joe Says:

I am using my Epix as a modem to get internet on my pc running xp. I am using my phone to run xbox live. I have a small problem with the nat settings. Is there anyway to change the nat settings on the epix? It will connect to live but the nat settings now is mod.

  101. panamatee Says:

how can i change the connection, i have a unlock att phone but using t-mobile, when it trys to connect it says media net, but on my connection setting i dont see media net, because i have everything set up for t-mobile already

  102. Brian Says:

  103. Henry Saballos Says:

me and my wife got this phone this morning & it is probably the easiest smartphones i have had the pleasure of using. Oddly there were several individuals at Sprint when i picked up my evo 4g. it’s so quick and snappy. The chip will be simpler to use to my moment. i read a well written htc evo review online!

  104. Kevin Says:

I am very interested in being able to use my Epix as a modem for my Windows 7 PC, but after talking to an ATT tech, he said it requires a tethering feature that is an additional $20 a month. Does this hack violate that ATT agreement?” If so, how do you get around it, i.e., how do you justify it? I would really like to use the hack, but not sure I could if its not “right”. Any thoughts? Thanks

  105. Tyler Says:

Brian- try turning the phone off and then back on after installing, this worked for me

Kevin- AT&T won’t know because you are using the exact same amount of data as you would if viewing on your phone, unless of course you really use it a lot

  106. Trek Says:

Just tried out on with the 6.5 update and it still appears to work (did not run on it but options appear).
Just remember – need to install the unlocker ( http://www.mysamsungepix.com/hacks-and-mods/application-unlockers/samsung-epix-application-unlocker/ ) first then this. After both .cab files have been installed reboot your phone and you should be good to go.

  107. 1337wannabe Says:

A quick path to working connection sharing is a search for ForceCellConnection in the registry and change its value to “Media Net”.. No need to download or install anything.
