Change ring and talk volumes

A lot of people say that the Samsung Epix’s ring volume is far too quiet — luckily Samsung lets us change this using a hidden volume control utility.

Please be careful when adjusting these setting. I suggest changing the volume level in small increments (1dB to 2dB at a time) and test your new volume settings out each time, this will prevent you from inadvertently maxing the volume out and either hurting your speaker/headphones/etc or even more importantly your ears! I haven’t checked out the max volume end of the spectrum so I don’t know how loud it gets, but I don’t recommend trying unless you incrementally reach the max volume and know that its not too loud.

When you find settings you like, post them in comments!

Used the WM9713 Control Util to access the Epix’s volume control panel:

  • Launch the Phone app by pressing the green “phone” button on your Epix.
  • Dial: *#0002*28346#

To change the Ring tone volume:

  • Go to: Menu > Normal > Handset.
  • Changed the DAC to: -10.5db (this may be slightly loud for some people, if so try bumping it down to -12dB)

To change the Handset/Speakphone/Earjack/Bluetooth (BTMono) volume:

  • Go to: Menu > Talking > Select corresponding item
  • TX: Controls how loud people hear you
  • RX: Controls how loud you hear people

change volume Change ring and talk volumes

You can adjust the dB values to your preference.

Remember to select Menu > Apply after setting your dB values.

Default volume settings for the Samsung Epix:

  • Normal > Handset: 0dB, -4.5dB, +30dB, +20dB, 1.5dB, blank
  • Normal > Headset: 0dB, -3dB, +24dB, +20dB, 1.5dB
  • Talking > Handset: -3dB, -3dB, +12dB, -3dB, +0dB, -4.5dB
  • Talking > Earjack:0dB, -3dB, +12dB, -6dB, +0dB, -6dB
  • Talking > Speakerphone: -1.5dB, 0dB, +12dB, 10.5dB, +0dB, -10.5dB
  • Talking > BTMono: -17.25dB, -12dB, -9dB, -6dB

Ok, so I followed the steps above, and managed to get my ringtone to be significantly louder in volume (I went into phone settings and hit the play button there and it’s nice and loud). However, incoming phone calls are still just as soft as before, starting at very very low volume for the two first rings, and jumps to a medium-ish volume in the middle of the third ring.

Upon reading a little bit more about this via google searches, it looks like Samsung implemented this “safety feature” to prevent either breaking your speakers, or hurting you when you have the phone close to your ear. I know that Nokia does this too on their newer E-series model, but in the case of Samsung, I think it’s just bad programming. The feature doesn’t exactly work when it “jumps” from one volume to another. Plus the delay in kicking in to the higher volume takes too long, and you are bound not to be able to hear your phone ringing, or not catch it in time to receive it.

Anyway, does anyone have a fix for this?

  2. Restroom Says:

I feel dumb asking this, since I’ve seen the hack posted before, but according to your instructions the default value, 0, should be louder than the suggested values, such as -12. Unfortunately I don’t know enough people to get someone to call me tonight to test it, otherwise I’d have my answer, but in case anyone else is wondering, you may want to reword the instructions to reflect the fact that any linear change from default is still a good deal louder, and from there it becomes a matter of degrees.

  3. Ryan Says:

Does anyone know how to make the vibration stronger or longer? I usually don’t notice it when it does vibrate.

  4. david Says:

Restroom, You are correct — i remove that working since its confusing. I think when you select “0DB” it means no change in DB from the default volume setting. Im not entirely sure though :)

  5. david Says:

Ryan – dont know — if you figure it out definitely post back here. I agree that the vibrate is far to weak (opposed to the Blackjack II’s which was far too strong)

  6. T. A. Says:

Well I feel quite dumb, but I have a Blackjack II and I think the sound on it isn’t all that loud. Is there some kinda app like this for the Blackjack???

  7. david Says:

    TA,

If you have a Blackjack II, check out MyBlackjack2.com .. Youll have more luck there than in these Epix forums. MyBlackjack2.com also has a forum you can post your question in.

  8. Hans Says:

Does anyone here can add more “rings” to the Epix, my device just rings 2 times very soft that you can hardly hear, then 2 louder rings and that’s it, it goes to the voice mail. When you a a bit far from the device and realize your phone is ringing by the time you reach it you missed the call……any ideas on this guys…!

  9. david Says:

Im not 100% positive, but I think you can call up AT&T and request they increase the ring-length on your line. Ive never tried this but say some other user post about it, cant remember where though.

  10. tvuong Says:

You can increase this ring-length by going to: Start/setting/Phone on the Personal tab then the services tab and select “Call Forwarding” and touch Get Settings then change the “Forward after” to 30 seconds. Default is 20 I think. Do not set it more than 30 if you do not want to be charged air time.

  11. oreamnos Says:

In the settings, on the Personal page, and then in Phone settings, there’s a tab for Services. If you select “Call Forwarding”, and then “Get Settings”, you can set it to give you 30 seconds instead of 20.

  12. Darren Says:

i dialed the number but it says failed shortly after, what did i do wrong?

  13. vinneme Says:

hey, just wondering what everyone put there values as? i want my ringer as loud as possible…

    -Thanks

  14. Skypiper Says:

Found this info while googling. and it works for mine. i think the SPK is the speaker vol.

    *#0002*28346#

You will see a wm9713 control util screen pop up.

To change the loudspeaker volume for ringtones, movies, mp3…

Click menu > normal > handset
    Digital-to-analog: DAC(0C) I set to 0db.
    Speaker volume: SPK(02) I set to -1.5db.
    The rest dont change.

    To change the headset volume…

Click menu > normal > headset
    Digital-to-analog: DAC(0C) I set this to 0db.
Headphones volume: HP(02) I set this to 0db.
    The rest dont change.

NOTE: You must click menu > apply for changes to take effect, recommend you play a mp3 & launch this app, then apply the changes and set your preferred volume.

  15. Engineering Says:

I know this is not related to the ring volume, but does anyone know how to turn off the “Touchscreen” when the phone is active. I continually hang up on people or put them on hold when my cheek presses the buttons when talking of the phone.

  16. ~Q~ Says:

    Engineering,
Go to Start>Settings>Power then the LCD Off tab. Check the box that reads “Turn off LCD after call has been connected for” and the select a time from the drop down menu.

    ~Q~

  17. Engineering Says:

I tried that but the “end” function still works on the touchsreen after the time duration (5 seconds) I’m to the point that turning the touchscreen off completely would be fine with me.

    thanks for the advice!

  18. VapitteeQuies Says:

I am unable to understand this post. But well some points are useful for me.

  19. Knowledge your freindly Att Rep Says:

Just to let everyone know, the posting is actually inaccurate. I managed to change the settings to get the ring tone to ring louder. btw attempting to change settings then going to listen to an mp3 or playing the ringtone from sounds and settings WILL NOT reflect how it will sound when the phone actually rings, there seems to be some sort of disconnect programming wise between the settings and the actual ring. here are the settings and FYI use at your own risk i am not liable for anything that might happen from this.

To increase ring volume to a reasonable loudness:
go to your phone keypad, dial *#0002*28346# then go to menu>normal>handset
not where this differs from the previous post is the settings. change DAC to 3db or 4.5db (i have mine on 4.5db since i keep mine in a case and its muffled a little). also change the RVOL to 12db. this works absolutely AMAZING. after changing all the settings click menu>apply then do a SOFT reset on your phone (turn it off then back on)

the ring volume was one thing that was going to make me return the phone but with this fix it is definitly alot better. now only if someone could tell me how to get rid of the ascending ring that would be great (and no dont tell me to go to sound settings and take it off increasing ring because this does absolutely nothing)

  20. tundrazach Says:

I cannot seem to get my phone to dial the number. I put in the correct number, hit the green button, and it says “waiting…” Then “Failed.” what am i doing wrong?

  21. sssweeetonyou Says:

Thanks so much for the info!! I use my speakerphone a lot and was pretty happy with the volume of my Blackberry Curve but found the Epix was so quiet I pretty much had to hold it up to my ear, defeating the purpose! I changed my speakerphone settings to RX 6dB and it’s nice and loud, perfect for when I’m at a noisy construction site or in the car and forgot to put on my headset.

  22. Rick Says:

This is why I love this website…..You guys really know how to tweek this stuff to make this phone work great.

    Thank you!!!!

  23. Medo Says:

I like the setting that “knowledge your friendly ATT rep” has provided… It works great with incoming ringtones… the ringtone definately becomes reasonably louder…

yet I still need to know how to increase volume for..
-music that can be played in windows media player
-ALARMS- I have a lot of trouble waking up from the default alarms and max volume control provided- it needs to be louder

also… has anyone heard of the maximum level that you can increase volume settings before the speakers become damaged??

  24. Tom Says:

I bought my phone Feb. of 2009, and when I try to call the number you provided it says “failed”. Any other suggestions for ringer problems?

  25. A-EpixUser Says:

Tom – you do not have to call the number

just go to phone > bring up the on screen number pad > type in *#0002*28346#

the audio control utility should appear after you key in the last #

  26. Deeken Says:

Guys, can anyone tell me how to lower the volume when I’m talking to someone? Usually the person on the other end sounds loud and muffled and I want to lower that volume so that I can hear them a lot more clearly. Thanks.

  27. Felicien Says:

Hi! This is great information because one of the things I hate about this phone is the low speaker volume. I think I’ve adjusted it correctly but I’m wondering if anyone can tell me what all the abbreviations under the various options stand for? I wouldn’t want to be tweaking something that would work against me…

BTW to clarify something about dB… a negative number means that you’re attenuating dB (lowering the volume). 0 dB is the device’s “full open” volume. Any positive dB is an increase above that baseline. At least that’s the way it is with audio systems…

Thanks in advance for the help with the abbreviations!

  28. iwouldbebob Says:

what do all the different settings mean? and will this affect the hack to remove the ascending ring? if it’s loud enough i prob won’t need to remove the ascending ring, because i do like the e-mail notification.

  29. Sabrina Says:

I too hate the touchscreen during a call! I tried the LCD power off but that didn’t help. When I’m on a call, I end up opening all the shortcuts from my home screen. Please, I hope someone knows of some shortcut to lock the touchscreen during a call.

    Thanks in advance.

BTW, I find I don’t have the problem for incoming calls answered while the phone was locked. This only happens when I’m making an outgoing call.

  30. xor Says:

Thanks so much for this thread. My phone was driving me nuts as well as the people trying to call. Just one question. Does DAC act like a main volume control? Does anyone know what M2BST and MPBST are? I am guessing media player boost. Am I close?

  31. Stickman Says:

How do you turn the keypad volume off?

  32. wonderwoman Says:

Does anyone know how to get my cell phone to actually ring even when my bluetooth is connected?

  33. Thumper Says:

I am having trouble hearing the Windows Voice Command on my Bluetooth headset. I have adjusted the volume on the RX but it doesn’t increase Voice Command responses. Do you know which setting it would be? Thanks!

  34. kenobooty Says:

ok so I still used the dial utiliy and switched the dB in the menu etc but incoming calls and even when I just play the ringtones anywhere, windows media player or under the notifications tab, it still isn’t loud, I put the DAC to positive 12dB and it gets aaaaa llliitttllleee louder but sounds extremely distorted as if the bass of my ringtone is killin the overall treble of the ringtone. for example I hear beat but no words…. how do I get it to sound clear and loud exactly like the blackjack i607 and i617??? help pls and thanks in advance!!!

  35. Civic Says:

What Felicien said is correct -db your lowering the vol. i set mine to 3.5 (not -3.5) its loud as heck!! just go up from 0db to the setting you want!!!!

  36. lys7 Says:

  38. Sangie Says:

I was having a problem with people hearing me on the phone. But with the suggestions on this page I was able to change the settings. Tremendous help.

    Thanks,

  39. Igor Says:

I have discovered what appears to be a unit limitation and wondering if anyone has a solution. If I dial a number that would prompt me for a key pad input (Like press “1″ for English), my phone works fine. However, if I am on the 3-way conference call, the key pad as well as the electronic key pad on the touch screen are both disabled. It is a very annoying problem, especially when I have to ask the other party of the 3-way call to input digits for me. I have spoke with Samsung geniuses that “suggested” to do a hard reset. Bad idea since it did not fix the problem and wiped all the data off my phone. Be sure to back everything up. Does anyone have an idea or solution for this annoying problem? I am about to send a “nastygram” to Samsung to see why such an important feature was left off the unit. May be another genius will come up with a firmware upgrade.

  40. DuncanConnor Says:

I love my Epix except for the volume issues addressed here and…
…the fact that when I’m on a call, my ear seems to open up processor intensive apps that kill my supposed 7-hour battery in about 7 minutes.

Sure, the touchscreen was fun at first, but if it means that my ear and car-keys open apps when the phone is in use or in my pocket, it’s getting a better and better candidate for an “upgrade” to my old phone, the Sony w810i – which has far fewer features but at least the battery lasts through my workday.

Does anyone know if/how the touchscreen can be disabled completely so I can just use the funky little scroll mouse thinger?

We all are having a same problem its not related to volume controls.

But at times when we try to make calls, it says waiting and gives a pop up of call failed.

Fact is caller was/is never on waiting and is too frustrating in emergency.

Only solution found is to call someone else and try calling again.

I don understand what should be done.

PLEASE DO PROVIDE SOLUTION FOR THIS PROBLEM

  44. Dude Please Says:

I know this isn’t related to the volume control thing, but i don’t know what else to do, and am looking for some help. Can anybody help me please? My Epix has experienced all of the common problems that we Epix users have grown accustomed to (volume control issues, power button glitches, etc.). Today it wanted to add a new trouble to that list, and now it won’t open my messages. I’ve tried accessing the message menu from the Start-Up menu, the touchscreen, and the message button in the lower right corner of the keyboard, but still no luck. Can you guys help me please?
