Hey guys
I just got my phone yesterday. I performed a hard reset (or format) to get my wifi on my browsers to work. I was hoping this would solve the problem for the Instant Messenger clients, but it did not work.
I'm currently not under a data plan. Just the bare bone essentials + unlimited texting. I went through most of the connection modes by going to AIM's Global Settings (except for the ISP and WAP mode, as i feared those would get me on the 3G network), but they did not work.
Does anyone else have this problem, or a solution to this?

actually it does work, but you use the SMS/texting based messengers, that's where AIM, MSN and YAHOO are actually sending texts/SMS to your phone directly (if i'm not mistaken), thats not a real Instant Messenger in the commonly used sense.
I personally use PALRINGO (google it) – it's a fully feldged, free (only have to sign up w. their own IM-system) Instant Multi-Messenger, I use it through EDGE/3G and/or WIFI just fine – it even resumes connections decently when you're in EDGE network – since in EDGE you can either just make calls OR surf the web…3G can do both parallel at the same time.
Just keep in mind to STAY offline with PALRINGO while NOT in a WIFI spot's area, or PALRINGO will use your EDGE/3G connectivity, which then will be very costly for you.

Alright well,
Scratch the wifi thing i mentioned haha. I do have unlimited messaging (which includes IMs).
However, i still can't connect. It says the following:
Unable to connect to the data network. Please ensure that the phone is not in flight mode and your current data network settings are correct. To change the way you connect go to 'Menu-> Settings->Global Settings' and select an appropriate setting.
I had it set to both the “Work” Network (which i'm assuming is the wifi setting for non-data plans), and the “My MMS Networks”, as well as “The Internet.”
Any thoughts?

Still wanting to use WiFi even with Unlimited then? Possibly try turning off the Proxy in the option for it in Settings/Connections. Only thing I've noticed with it off is things like device.home and some web content from AT&T doesn't work…but who needs that stuff, we want working phones!
Mine works pretty slick, I just go into connection manager and turn off Phone and on Wifi.
P.S. I also went in the registry under HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Today
Under it you will find a key for Wireless and in it a value for Enable which you can set to 1 and allow access to Connection Manager from Today screen after reboot/power cycle. I have this on other WinMobile devices and missed it. (Now I just need to find what it executes so I can add it to a Fn Key)

If unable to connect with GPRS and not using WiFi was meant then your network settings may be set to Auto Pick or something wrong. These and other GPRS settings may be locked, although if wrong they may be unlocked already and changing them messed them up. You have to set the ReadOnly value in ConnMgr\Providers key to 0 to unlock, or there is an app in Windows folder called UAMGR or something like that that can unlock GPRS settings. You can then fix it to you connection that has access point= wap.cingular.com, etc. If it still doesn't work then I'm not sure what else to do.

So i've tried to unlock the GPRS as you mentioned, and it still won't connect when i have the instant messenger set to ” My MMS Networks”. it just halts at “Signing In…” now //edit: i tried pressing “unlock GPRS” agan and now it goes back to the “Unable to connect to the data network…” again //
Same goes for “My Work Networks”
Can i get the precise connection settings for “My MMS Networks” from someone here?
