I thought i'd try to compile a list of known issues the Samsung Epix has. Please feel free to add/discuss these issues. If you know of any more issues the Epix has, post them in the thread and ill try to move them into this post.
NOTE: Samsung has released an official notfication patch that allows e-mail notifications to occur when the phone is in sleep more. Download the patch here.
  1. Ring-tone is always ascending/increasing making it easy to not hear an incoming call until the phone has rang several times, at which point it can be too late to pick-up. This was a design choice by Samsung.
  2. Blinking LED light notifications stop when the Samsung Epix enters sleep mode (even when set to blink “forever”)
  3. No e-mail notfication in sleep mode.
  4. Vibration seems weak (atleast compared to the Samsung Blackjack II) making it easy to miss notifications.
  5. Some Epixes (this may not effect all Epix phones and those that are effected can very in severity) have a tendancy to lockup when in sleep mode. This has happened to me a handful of times.

no matching of contacts or recent calls as you punch in a number to call, it only matches the name

no way to tell if your BT headset is connected without going to the phone screen

clicking on voicemail icon in top bar does nothing

Matchign contacts to typed numbers works for me. It doesn't highlight, but it does narrow the list down.

Lack of a headset indicator is a WM issue I think, because my last phone was the same way.

Matching contacts does not work for me on typed numbers, even if I force it to enter numbers by pressing the Fn key twice it stills tried to match against a name.  However it does seem to match numbers when you enter the call history list…. this appears to me as though the phone does have the capability to match but just doesn't.

My blackjack 1 had WM on it and would show the headset on the top bar.  Granted I was using Da_G's cooked rom, but if he could make it work then there's no reason Samsung can't.

Also I noticed if the phone display turns off, while on a call, you have to hit the end button on the phone 3 or 4 times to end the call.  Hitting it once does not end the call and sometimes hitting it twice does not work either.

Also the call timer “stops” when the display turns off, and takes a moment to “update” when the display comes back on (either while still on the call or if you've attempted to end the call).

All in all, it's pretty clear Samsung still has a lot of work to do.  If these issues are not resolved soon, I can see myself not buying another Samsung device in the future.

actually, when i use my JABRA BT8010 on my Epix, i get an indicator at the title-bar, it looks like a headset with a music-note inbetween the speakers. Mind you that my JabraBT8010 can do both, handsfree and stereo-music. Sometimes though it 'misses' to link up via stereo-music and is then just connected as/in handsfree mode. I've to go then into the Bluetooth Manager and click on “Connect Headset via Stereo Mode”.

I noticed that, If you have WIFI enabled & connected to your local LAN-WIFI, and have your ActiveSync set to “tunnel through all internet services/traffic” through your desktop PC, ActiveSync cannot start/link-up to your Epix via USB-cable. I presume there's a HW address/access conflict somewhere on the physical Layer in the NIC chip.

I personally do not use the vibrate feature, as it has a detrimental effect on the battery's lifecycle as a small electromotor has to throw-around a small weight ;)

as for the delay in the call-timer or delay in the call closing. I think that's an issue that WM 6.1 is not really part of the phone-module SOC, which is rather independent. It happened to me once that my WM6.1 crashed but i was still able to talk and hang-up afterwards. I think that the phone-module SOC (System On a Chip) has an API which is queried by WM 6.1 for “status updates”, but since WM6.1 is “sleeping” when the screen turns dark while on a call, it cant do it. Which also explains the delay/lag/sluggishness in initiating/closing calls. This HW independence allows you to use your Epix as a PDA/handheldPC while on a call. I personally prefer the HW independence :-)

As for the number/name contact matching, it does it only when the number is part of the name. I tried to find out of the PocketOutlook looks into the contacts and compares numbers with the ones you entered (even with locked FN-key) but it doesnt. It just compares what you've entered in the “primary name” fields. I think looking into each field within an Outlook Contact would overwhelm the small CPU, especially when you start having multiple hundreds of Contacts with names, adresses, several phone #'s, company info's/adresses and small notes attached to/in them. :-)

I have an issue with my Epix that recurs every couple of days. The phone just shuts off. Before I put the phone in my pocket I lock it and then turn the screen off with a single push of the power button. Sometimes when I take the phone out of my pocket it looks to be off. No blinking light on the top-right, and I'm unable to start the phone with a multi-second press of the power button. The only way to bring the phone back to life is to open the battery compartment, remove/reinsert the battery. Is anyone else having an issue like this, or is this perhaps the “lockup when in sleep mode” issue I've been reading about in this forum?

I'd imagine its the lockup feature that we all ran into initially.  I haven't had a single problem with the phone except when i mess it up myself.  Question though does anyone know how to keep the phone from going into “sleep mode” while using it.  When i'm using GPS or trying to text after a minute or so if i haven't touched the phone it will go into “sleep mode” then I have to input my password to unlock it, etc…….

This is popping up on the AT&T forums also, but i get an occasional error saying “this is forced SLOG DUMP”

When this error pops up the phone is essentially disabled until you reset.  I had AT&T send me another phone and i have gotten the same error.

Anyone else w/ this issue? any known causes or solutions?

Recurring

  • The notification issues described above.  Annoying.
  • The notification for email occasionally resets with “show on screen” even though I keep turning that off.
  • The battery status goes in 10% increments (even when using other indicators like batty).  Annoyingx2!
  • The battery indicator has been inaccurate for me when on a car charger
  • The End key long press does not lock the phone when a Simple PIN or alphanumeric password have been set up (which I have to do per company Exchange policy)
  • The phone wakes up for no reason at times…

Non-recurring

  • I had one weird freeze that required me to take the battery out (the phone call and bluetooth were still on, but I couldn't even hang up the call…)
  • I've had one shell.dll crash so far (or maybe shell.exe or something like that).

I'll think of more eventually.

The ascending ring issue can be partially solved by a registry edit.  I am going by memory here but if you search at xda-developers website you will find the details.

HKCU\Control Panel\Sounds\RingTone0

You will find a field called “script” ( I think).  It will be set to something like apw2r

Which stands for

a – activate

p – play ringtone

w2 – wait 2 seconds

r – repeat

I changed mined to ac100pw2r

c100 says to change the ring volume to 100% of the volume.

Keep in mind I said that this was a partial fix.  The first ring is still soft but then it goes immediately to full volume.  Not perfect but better than before.

I tried changing JKCU\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\Ring\InitVol from 5 to 10.  It rings a LOT louder now.  I'd be afraid to make it go much louder.

Still quiet for the first couple seconds though.

I know that the ringer issue will be fixed in the romupdate along with the SLOG DUMP problem

For the sleep/standby mode problem, i would have to press the power button many times (long and short presses) in order for it to function again.  It won't instantly turn on.  It takes some time for the system to get back on its feet to show the screen again.

Mine does the same except it is accompanied by sound. beeps. Usually beep – beep, beep. No message on screen, nothing but the wake and the sound.

Also, sometimes my notification options (text) revert back to the default of showing the message on screen. Annoying, but doesn't do it too often and not sure what triggers it. Soft reboot maybe…

I know the Slog dump error. It is a really fatal error. I called to Samsung service today and was told that they have prepared a patch with Qualcomm.

However, they didn't inform me when it would be released. Anyway, if you guys know any further information, please let me know. I look forward to the patch.

Thank you.

I have the hard to wake up problem on my Epix….but I also have another that I have not seen mentioned here.

Every 2-3 days on average it will get into a state after a wake up where it does not have any sound (including phone calls..I cannot here ring tone or the person on the other end and applications) the unit also does not respond to the touch screen…I can still navigate and click using the mouse but the touch screen is inactive.    Have any of you experienced this?  For full disclosure it may be a 3rd party app causing the issue but I do not have many (spb backup, opera, live search, pocket mechanic and skyfire…I have others but they were added after I started to experience the problem.  I loaded the listed apps on the first or second day of owning the phone…ignoring one of my normal week long break ins prior to loading 3rd party apps…doh).

Hi there…

My Epix has the same problem where it will occasionally just seems to turn off.  At first I thought the battery might be shaking loose, but many times it happens when the phone is just sitting there (not being shaken around).  Has there been any further information on this, or fixes?

Thanks much!

The other day my Samsung “bricked” itself.  I was listening to music, and monitoring my battery usage as I went.  I should have had at least 50% left.  I had gotten one of those SLOG DUMP messages, but had blissfully ignored it, since TodayPlayer was continuing to work, and I didn't need to make any calls.  About a half hour after the SLOG DUMP message, the phone went “Beep!”, vibrated 3 times (do I even have it set to vibrate?), and displayed the shutdown video.

Nothing I could do would turn it on.  Plugging it into USB to charge it didn't help. Taking the battery out did nothing (even left it out for a half hour).  Hard reset didn't work.  Even tried Fn-B and Fn-Enter during turn on, which is supposed to put into Emergency for Flash mode (though this may only work for European 780s (or 760s or whatever).

Plugging it into my car charger finally woke it up.  (Guess USB wasn't providing enough charge, though it does charge it up during the day…)  Battery said it had 60%. Confused
