hI,

just got a epix I907 and had it unlocked. I am on the fido network here in Canada. I have setup my internet connection and I can get my mail downloaded and surf the internet using skyfire (which is great)

I loaded Garmin xt gps software and it works perfectly BUT in the middle of working I keep getting the error that it is trying to dial out to ims.cingular connection and it cannot connect. I have searched everywhere on this phone and no where do I have programmed for cingular connection. This only happens when I am using garmin xt software Is there a way to figure out how to disable this annoying option.

My next question is. I am using outlook for my email and I have told the program to download the entire message. Yet when I look at the incoming email it says that the picture have been blocked and if I click on it, it will say that it is downloading images. How can I set it up to see all the images when it downloads the email ?

THAT IMS.CINGULAR IS USED FOR video share HERE IN THE STATES ON AT&T.(sorry caps)

You might might to look for the video share setting (start/settings/video share) and insure that IT is off. As to your email question I am not sure why or how to correct that.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

I have unchecked all options in the video share and I still get this message ONLY when running Garmin GPS. I have shut off data in Garmin. This error does appear any other time only in when I use Garmin.

Does anyone have any ideas ???

Does anyone out there use any other GPS program other than Garmin. I am will to try.

I use Google maps and local live both work fine and i don't get anytype of error messages.  you can go to google.com to find google maps and local live is here http://livesearchmobile.com/?mid=1011 or just type m.live.com into your browser on your phone.   Good luck.

I concur, google maps is a breeze to install and set up w. the Epix'/Saga's internal GPS. The only issue you may have with, is that you will not have “turn in 100 yards left” voice-recorded playbacks. But i think that's a rather minor drawback, considering the wealth google/MS Life search can give you to find stores, adresses (by names/phone#'s) restaurants and what-not.

Google maps is worthless if you don't have a 3G data connection, and slow even if you do. The advantage to programs like Garmin is that the map data is on a memory card.

Thanks all for your replies,

I am still with the problem. Does anyone have experience with Tomtom or IGO or route66 or navigon. I want something where the maps and data are on the storage card.

I look forward to hearing from my fellow epix users.

I am using TomTom Navigator 6 on my Epix.  Setting it up is rather complicated since the TomTom software doesn't know how to use the WM6.1 “managed” GPS COM Port.  I had to install the application unlocker and the microsoft .net compact framework (both available on this site) as well as the GPStest utility found on the Sourceforge.net site.  (This GPStest utility is different from the application which has the same name and is found in the windows folder.)  The GPS test utility creates a virtual com port for the internal GPS (I used Port 2) which TomTom can find.

Running TomTom means first starting the GPStest utility which creates the initial fix on the satellites and feeds the GPS data to the virtual com port.  Then start TomTom (set it to find the NMEA GPS on Com2 at 4800 baud – just have to do this the first time) and it will lock onto the sats in a couple of seconds.  When you shut down TomTom, also shut down the GPStest utility since it runs the GPS receiver in the background and will eat the battery very quickly.

Definitely not as clean as running TomTom on my previous WM5 device but at least I get to continue to use the software that I spent a lot of money to purchase and upgrade through the years.

BTW, I have called several GPS software companies regarding support for the Epix (including Garmin, TomTom and iGuidance) and they all disclaim any support for the Epix claiming that ATT has locked the GPS for Telenav use only.

Back to the original question regarding dialing out to ims – this is probably due to the fact that the GPS in the Epix is “aGPS” which means that it needs “assistance” to locate and lock onto the sats.  Your software is trying to get a sat fix and the GPS itself is causing the dial out so that it can triangulate on the nearby cell towers and provide the initial fix for the GPS.  Google Maps and Live Search will cause the same behavior but most users probably never notice it because they are also waiting for the maps or the satellite images to download.

Thanks Beachdog for the response. I was thinking along the same lines that the gps was causing the problem because it was doing an update on postions. Is there a way to unlock the GPS and tell the gps to use my local service provider to triangulate the position using  my local internet service.

On my old blackjack II there was an unlock for the gps that used COM4 and this never happened.

actually, the GPS in the Epix is a real GPS chip, but by default it's offloading the required calculations of triangulation at start-up onto the network – hence aGPS – which allows that the Epix can locate/display your position in a matter of merely a few seconds, instead of up to a minute or two. If the epix cant find a carrier signal, it'll do all the calculations on its own. More details here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AGPS

beside, EDGE is rather sufficiently fast for GoogleMaps as a protocol, it becomes 'criminal' when you're stuck on GPRS. Keep in mind that GoogleMaps will not work when you're on EDGE/GPRS and you're on the phone making a call. Only 3G/UMTS/HSDPA network can parallel handle call and data streams at the same time.

Hi everyone,

I finally figured out the problem !!! Here is what I found. When deleting a connection in setup it does not seem to delete it in the registry properly. I found a blog that showed you on the blackjack II and epix on how to change the registry connections to allow more than 1 internet connection. I went and followed the steps which were all set properly to allow more than 1 connection. BUT what I did find was that in the registry under connections there was still IMS.cigular connection and a wap.cingular connection even though I did not have them listed in my connections tab (in setup). So I proceeded to delete them from the registry and only left the fido connection that I needed and believe it or not Garmin works like a charms.

Thanks everyone for their input and help.

Maybe we should include this a a bug in the Epix.
