Hello, new Epix owner here, just picked it up from ebay for a good price and enjoying it so far. Much much better thanks to the various tips on this site, and especially thanks to the excellent new SPB Mobile Shell 3.5.

Anyways, I'm trying to figure out GPS with this thing. I'm one of those odd people who don't use a data plan, as I'm almost always in wifi range at work, home, or the usual places I go. But I do want to use GPS for the occational out of town trip. I have TomTom6 which I used on my old HTC device, paired with a bluetooth GPS receiver. It worked great. I have installed it on my Epix but so far can't get a signal. I might upgrade to Garmin or some other newer program if that will be easier.

As far as I can tell, I do not have the ID1 “fix” on my Epix. But I can't seem to reliably get GPS to work, even using the GPStest program. I have it set like this:

Operating type: standalone

Session type: “nevigation” (typo in the program, not mine!)

Start type: Cold (should I try warm?)

And I just can't seem to get a signal, although I have done so twice when driving around, usually I do not. I don't know what I did differently those 2 times…. once time I remember starting google maps first, then exiting and running GPStest. I don't know if that is relevant.

Obviously TomTom won't work since I am not finding any sats. I can get it to say “searching for GPS signal” but it never finds one, although once it said “GPS signal lost 5 seconds ago” and kept counting up from there….. I'm sure there is some silly thing I'm doing wrong.

OK I got it to work. I read that many people had to resort to a hard reset before it would work. Since I wanted to get rid of all the Samsung bloatware, I just went straight to Trashcan's latest WM6.5 ROM. It was an easy install and really looks and feels much better/faster. I still prefer SPB Mobile Shell 3.5, so I installed that again and it works great.

At that point I used GPStest.exe to change the GPS setting to standalone. Ran the test and it found 6 sats fairly quickly. I really wanted to get my TomTom6 working, so I tried GPSproxy, which I could not get to work properly. Switched to GPSgate and then TomTom worked very quickly.

I had S2U2 installed before the WM6.5 update, so that might have contributed, but more than likely it was the hard reset that was needed. Either that or going to 6.5 fixed the GPS.

If anyone is unsure of the unofficial 6.5, I highly recommend it. I use the optical mouse all the time, and the “issue” doesn't really bother me. I just slide it down to the bottom to hide it. It is very much faster and easier to use, and works just great with Mobile shell.

Sorry, didn't see this until now. Yes I'm using non ID1 version, on my old pre-cingular AT&T account with no data plan. I see a “3G” icon but have not configured data, and actually use the free Modaco NoData program to ensure no data is even trying to be sent. GPS is still working great, it usually takes 30-60 seconds to find a signal in TomTom but occasionally will take a fe minutes, depending on where I am located.
