has anyone came across a tool/program that allows to manually unpack the .CAB files out of the desktop-installers, which just transfers the .CAB-install files for your PocketPC/PDA-phone/smartphone anyway?

I want to extract those .CAB files manually to install the programs directly WITHOUT the “left-behind” installations-junk on the desktop.

atlanta,

i don't know if you mean to extract the .CAB files or to extract them on the phone.

if you are going to extract them on the phone, then you need PocketWINRAR, that is available on win-rar's site, and if you are extracting them to your computer then you need normal win-rar.

Win-RAR desktop version isn't free, but you get a 30 day fully functional trial.

The PocketWinRAR is free forever.

I dont think cabextract or winRAR will do the intelligent filename extraction. What i mean is in CABs files with long name (aka most files) are renamed to MYFILE~1.001 and MYFILE~2.04 when the real file names should be “My File.txt” and “My File.exe” .. This mapping occurs in the _setup.xml file in each CAB.

atlana, can cabextract do this? I played around with it today and it didnt seem like it could. Im fairly certain that WinRAR cannot do this. The extraction program would have to reference the _setup.xml in the CAB in order to know what to rename the files to.

@ jack,

i want them extracted from the desktop-installers, so i can copy/move them directly onto the Epix' storage and install from there

@ david,

i found – or so i thought – cabextract to, it lead to a site cygwin-something, but there was none, do you've a direct link to DL it ? if the names are in the XML file, it can be renamed manually. My point is that i dont want all that installer's-junk left behind on my desktop :-)

A friend of mine in germany who speaks/reads russian, told me he has a tool from a russian site that does that, but i've to wait untill he's back home. I'll keep you guys posted.

atlana,

I got the same problem – I ended up installing Cygwin and compiling the src into the executable. I think that the executable requires Cygwin to be installed to run the cabextract.exe — if you want I can email you the exe, but im pretty sure youll need to have Cygwin installed atleast.

Im pretty sure WinRAR does the same thing cabextract does thought.
