After the ID1 update, I noticed that I could no longer use my Epix aGPS with Garmin XT or Google Maps.  It simply would not connect with any GPS Sattelites.  I used GPSTest, and it just hung at “Starting Up GPS”.  This is a fairly common problem after the  update from what I hear, so I wont go into any more detail.  Here is how I fixed it:

1) In my case, I re-performed the update.  I think this step is unnescessary, but if the next steps don't work for you, try performing the update over again, doing a hard reset, then picking up @ step 2.

2) Go to Start-> Settings ->System and select “External GPS”.  Use the following settings:  GPS program port: COM4, Hardware Port: COM9, Baud rate: 4800, Manage GPS Automatically.

3) Install AT&T Navigator. You can download it from here:

http://otacdn.telenav.com/nav/…..1.3.17.cab

It appears that once you install AT&T's gps program, your GPS will function properly.  Once it is installed, go ahead and run it, it will ask you  for a first and last name, and will give you an arbitrary pin code.  This is for the free trial of their software.  Go ahead and connect to their service and verify that your gps is working properly with Telenav.  If it is, go ahead and exit AT&T Navigator.

4) Go to Start-> Settings ->System and select “External GPS”.  Verify that the Program port is still set to COM4.  Close settings.

5) Open GarminXT.  It should automatically detect the GPS and begin working, but if it doesnt try clicking the scroll icon or the empty bars, and click disable or whatever until you  get to the screen where you select your gps port.  Select Serial -> COM4.  You may need to close and re-open Garmin or restart your device.

Hopefully this process will work as well for you as it did for me, since it was a REAL pain not having my GPS for a few weeks…. but ymmv! sf wink Samsung Epix Forums

Fixes like the one posted above didn't help me with my post-1D1 GPS or battery drain.  The following info with was posted by Neil on the “saga” thread on this site's homepage (comments). This finally did help me to fix the GPS and apparently the battery drain as well.

give this a try…

For those with battery issues I think I found a possible fix. It seems that the ID1 update broke the aGPS function of the device so that it will never connect to data. Prior to the update, the device would connect to the data network and find the location rather quickly. This does not happen after the update. With my limited programming experience, I would make sense that one line of code that points in the wrong direction could put the program into a loop and eat up resources including the processor. It seems that if you set the GPS not to use the assisted functionality, this does not happen.

Navigate in the file browser (programs>applications>file browser) to My Device/Windows/GPSTest.exe
Select: Menu>Options>GPS
Under the “Operating Type” option select “Stand-alone” and then select “Done”

This should allow you to use the GPS (if it works at all) without “Device.exe” hitting ~70%. For me it stays around ~1% where it normally is even when using the GPS and does not drain the battery faster than normal.

I hope this helps and good luck to those sticking with the Epix

This worked for me, inside the house, although next to  a south facing window. Got a fix after several minutes. Checking device.exe and it's within normal range after exiting the app.

I'll monitor this for a few days. This may make waiting for the (official) WM 6.5 release worth the wait.

Thanks for the heads up!

Since this fix is turning off the ability of the aGPS to get location information from the cellular system, it can cause increased sat lock time (but not nearly as bad as without this tweak)

I tested multiple programs from my home yesterday – GPStest, GPSproxy, TomTom and Google Maps.  All were finding the GPS and getting sat lock in 10-30 seconds.  This is indicative that after the first lock, the GPS is retaining sat data in order to make initial lock quick even without the assist from the cell system.

Today, I drove about 30 miles away with the GPS turned off.  Tunred on the GPS when I arrived at my destination to see how long it would take to find and lock the sats from a new position.  Initial lock in the new location took under 2 minutes.  Far better than post-1D1 performance and almost as good as my other PDA with aGPS.

I kept the GPS going for the entire ride back and then shut it down.  Restarting the GPS, it took under 10 seconds to find and lock on the sats.

Battery was very low after the 40 minute drive but that was because TomTom is set to keep the display lit at maximum brightness all the time it is running.  This was no different than pre-1D1 battery life when using the GPS.

For me, I'll consider this fixed.

My results have also been positive. An interesting note is that I recently took up the fight again after hosing my Epix with ID1, and had not one but TWO refurb units sent out (1st had a cosmetic defect, and lousy GPS) but the 2nd had somewhat decent GPS, managing to get a lock in a minute or so in most situations. I bring all this up because I had the opposite effect when inadvertently doing what's discussed in the first post in this forum. I added AT&T MAPS Application (Free, very basic  version of AT&T Navigator) Just because I like all things free, even though I have Garmin XT, Google Maps, Bing (Windows live Mobile) and OCN (On Course Navigator). The darn AT&T Maps BROKE my working GPS, though not entirely. Tripled the time it took to get the GPS to even wake up.

I am happy I found the GPS Test Setting, since that put me back in the running. And yes, Device.exe is not burning up the battery, even after using any or all of my GPS Apps. I forget, though if the “Start Type” setting was previously set to “warm” or “cold” I went back to TRY warm, thinking it would help startup time, but it was already set to warm after my first change of “Operating Type” to “Stand Alone”. In any event, It works acceptable, perhaps as good as pre-ID1, and Battery issue seems fixed.

That should hold us until Official 6.5 gets here. Come on AT&T, don't make us suffer like we did with BlackJack II waiting for 6.1!!!! sf yell Samsung Epix Forums
