Also, with Data disable you will not be able to use Google Maps or Bing (Live) Search.  If you have a GPS program with the maps preloaded on your phone then you should still be able to use it.

As far as ATT blocking it for you, I have no idea.

I can confirm this. I called AT&T to block all data connection. I am still able to text (no picture though) and use all functions that require data access through wireless (interenet, mobile email, google maps…)

Only downfall is that you need to connect to a wireless connection each time you turn your phone on if you need at access the internet and can eat up your battery life if you are constantly on it.

But on the other side, because your phone is not constatnly on the 3G data network, it can help save battery life as well. I've gone for 4-5 days without recharging the battery (but this is not being on wireless or having a data plan).
