This phone is plagued with so many problems!!! Stay away from it! Spend and extra 50 bucks and get the HTC Fuze. I did. I bought the Epix the day it came out and in the 26 days I had it, i went through three. Problems ranged from ringer problems, to the optical mouse not working, to the screen going totally green on two of the phones, to depleated batery life, to no volume at all, bluetooth not paring, etc…you get the idea. I cannot believe that AT&T didn't do more R7D before they released this one. Oh and just in case you are wondering, no I didn't install ANYTHING on this phone. It still had all factory settings and programs on it, to ensure that it wasn't something I was doing wrong!!! Chock one up for the research team @ AT&T…way to go smiley frown Samsung Epix Forums

Tony, sorry to hear you've had such a bad experience with the Epix. From my personal experience I haven't had any outright problems with the Epix hardware not working (screen, battery life, optical mouse, bluetooth problems) .. it does seem very stange that you'd get three Epixes that have all these problems though.

I will say that the Epix does have a its fair share of quirks, quirks that I hope will be fixed with a software/ROM update in the near future.  I honestly don't think youre HW problems are going to be the common experience for Epix owners (I havent seen this issues you listed talked about on other forums).

Anyhow – your feedback, postive or negative, is certainly most welcome here!

Hope you have better luck w ith Fuze!

uhm, sounds like somebody got a lemon-batch in HW devices.

I own the Epix too – I agree with david, it has it's fair share of “quirks” being a TRUE PDA-phone. But the only major gripe i have that the battery is a bit on the “skinny capacity” side if you use it a lot w. the screen running, bluetooth and WIFI active. But I love the CPU performance, as it's able to run 350 MB TV-rips nicely even with stuff running in the background.

But if the connectivity-periperals are turned off, and you turn it into POWER-SAVE for brightness, you're doing fine. I'm sick in bed atm and watched like 6-7 STARGATE ATLANTIS episodes in a row, and lost 'only' 60% battery capacity (using TCPMP as media player), including being online to ICQ via PALRINGO (via EDGE/3G data-connectivity) messenger.

Also, the inbuilt handwriting recognition is rather a lot faster/more accurate/more responsive compared to my old hx2495b IPAQ PDA (which was flashed to WinMobile 6.1 Classic; 520 Mhz CPU).

EDIT: I think the issue w. most people is, to realize that this isnt a 'generic' smartphone (like the BlackJack 1/2 or the FUZE), but that it's rather a fully-fledged PDA/PocketPC w. cell-phone capabilities

I own both the Epix and the Fuze. While the Wife took over the Epix, I had my fair share with it.

Honestly I liked the Epix best. You can't use the Fuze 1 handed and expect to type out a message. Also there are a lack of physical hardware buttons accessible with the phone closed.

The Epix coupled with FTouchSL, chgFingerMouse, and FixVol makes the Epix a sweet, easy to use, one hand operable, speed demon, pda phone.

The Fuze ain't bad, but it has it's fair share of problems.

I bought the Fuze the day after its release.  It was returned to AT&T 4 days later.  I had lots of dropped calls, internet connection problems, lost email, and the navigation wheel quit working.  I exchanged it for the Epix and have had no problems at all.

I REALLY wanted that Fuze to work, but I must admit that the EPIX has done an admiral job.

That's really bad that it didn't work out for you,

It looks like a good phone, but with all those problems i don't think i would be keeping it either.

hhmm, fuze….there was something that rang a bell…*checking here http://www.pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=1472 *

ah yyeesss…thats why…it's made by HTC – that explains why it has issues. HTC has over the past 2+ years majorly productions problems to keep up with the demand in B2B-sold units as ODM/OEM vendor. Not sure of you guys are familiar with the AT&T Tilt fiasco (aka HTC TYTN II / KAISER ), HTC built-in really good on-die HW features w. ATI 3D accelerator and stuff, but they fucked up by NOT providing hardware-drivers, the AT&T Tilt runs entirely in software emulation in video and audio and GUI processing. Apparently this seem to happen a lot w. HTC devices these days.

I really like this phone. Took about 4 days to get used to.  I am not a power user by any means.   I use this phone in stead of a landline.  My previous phone was the HTC 8125 which I had for 3 years. I tend to keep phones for awhile so I choose carefully. My only gripe is with the unnecessary junk.  Trying to find a program that will delete tone etc.

I agree with the thread starter that the Epix is JUNK! I too am on my third phone in less than 30 days. I am taking it back tomorow and getting something different. I think I will try the fuze and see how it performs. I heard that AT&T would be getting the Omnia? Anyone know anything about this?

Kneel to Zod,

Unfortunately it doesnt sound like the Omnia is coming to AT&T (check this thread in the AT&T forums).

I wrote it earlier, and wanted to post it more in detail again after julies post, but i fucked up w. the “whats the sum of..?” anti-bot question, and it didnt post icon biggrin Samsung Epix Forums

People arent realizing that the Epix is a PDA-phone and not a smartphone. Most people are expecting a smartphone in the Epix, much like the Blackjack I/II, especially since it has the blackjack's I/II formfactor and design. (which is btw the reason it's NOT called Blackjack III as it's not a smartphone any longer).

The difference ? PDA-Phones are primarily Personal Computers in handheld-form (read: PocketPC) which can be used to make calls. smartphones are souped-up cellphones that have some, limited features of the PocketPC.

Devices with WindowsMobile Professional are PDA-phones which all have a touchscreen with handwriting-recognition input. Devices with WindowsMobile Standard are smartphones, and usually dont have a touchscreen

Yes, there are devices out there with touch screen, but it's primarily to either replace a small, lacking QWERTY keyboard, or to make “finger/thumbing”-navigation easier. In addition such touch-screen smartphones usually run a propietary User Interface (Flash-based, or Blackberry or others) and never WindowsMobile, which limits drastically their abilities to run 3rd party programs other than JAVA/BREW based.

One has to rethink their ways of handling the Epix. I rather believe that “oldschool” PocketPC users have it a lot easier to utilize the Epix full potential, than most smartphone users.

but everyone is entitled to their own dis-/agreement

I can't wait for some of the rom chefs to cook us up a rom that gets rid of all the bloat on the Epix.  Once I had Da_G's rom for my blackjack 1 it was like I was in heaven…used that phone for almost 2 years, longest I've ever gone with a phone. smiley cool Samsung Epix Forums

Tony, I too, am sorry about your experience with the EPIX.  I have mine about 3 weeks now and absolutely love the phone.  No issues except those that I am the cause of.  I also agree with atlana.  This is NOT a smartphone, it is a PDA phone!  To me, a cell phone is a tool not a toy.  I could care less about multimedia capability or how cool the phone looks or how many colors it comes in.  If the phone can't help me function better on a day to day basis, I have no need for it.  I had been a Palm OS user for for about 6 years and went to WM because AT&T doesn't offer any Palm phone besides the Centro, which is too small for my fingers.  I love the optical mouse.  For sure, it had made the transition from Palm to WM that much easier.  The phone does have a learning curve to it for me, but I am enjoying the journey.  I looked at the HTC FUZE and the LG INCITE but I do not care for slider phones as that slider becomes a mechanical point of failure and from using a TREO, I became accustomed to one handed operation.  What got me looking at the EPIX was the ability to test drive a BlackJack ll that is a spare company phone for several weeks.  I liked all the extras that the EPIX offered over the BlackJack ll.  The clincher for me was MS Mobile Office.  The only nit I have to pick with the phone is when I use my Blueant Z9 bluetooth headset, the phone ringtone defaults to a basic tone instead of my custom ringtone.  That, however, is a small blip in an overall awesome phone.

@Tom

hhmm, must be an issue with your Bluetooth headset related, I've a JABRA BT8010 BTv2 mono+stereo headset, and my Epix rings the “Starwars Imperial March” regardless if I'm in “freehand headest” mode or in “multimedia stereo” mode (the epix can differentiate from both).

Tom, I have the Blueant Z9 with 4.0 firmware and it uses my ringtone.  Funny thing is that sometimes the phone rings and at other times it rings in the Z9 (which is the way the Z9 always worked with my Treo)

Doesn't bother me enough to complain or spend any time addressing.

BTW – other than the lack of long term wear comfort for the Z9, it is one of my favorite devices.  I have a very loud car and most people don't even know that I'm driving during the call unless I tell them.  They think that I have a Lexus. sf smile Samsung Epix Forums
