germ,
As you know, I come from a Blackjack II background and thought it was a darn good smartphone all things considered. When I purchased a Samsung Epix I thought I was going to be a very similar experience to the Blackjack II except better all around because it had everything I thought the Blackjack II lacked: bigger screen, touchscreen, bigger battery, wifi, faster CPU …
Sure the Epix had all those things, but like atlana has said several times in the forums, the Epix is a PocketPC NOT a smartphone. Where I was used to each one handed use of the Blackjack II, I more often than not had to use two hands to operate my Epix (chgFingerMouse, and SmartSKey/VolFix have helped somewhat).
Even thought some things are alot easier to do on the Epix (use a webbrowser, media player apps, file explorer, etc.) I find that I can still perform the core functions of the phone a lot faster and easier on my Blackjack II (make calls, navigate emails, sms, etc.).
In my mind there are two main things users should be aware of before buying an Epix:
- The Optical mouse/4-way dpad is weird and takes getting used it. It just not as fast as sa traditional click-based 4-way dpad.
- The Epix is still buggy. It has some annoying problems with notification/alert functionality and can/will freeze up on occasion (a problem I never really had w/ my BJII). It seems like most of the problems are related to the the Epix's “sleep” mode. I am sure Samsung will release a patch/update fixing these issues, though its anyones guess when it will happen. I dont think these “bugs” are deal-breakers, just annoyances youll have to put up with.
All and all the Epix is a pretty cool phone. I haven't found much it can do that the Blackjack II can't do (other than browsing the web well) but then again Im still new to the whole PocketPC scene.
Hope this helps a little!
