Having a strong sense of beating my head against a wall (coupled now with the fact that I'm now ansering myself!) I sent a note to Samsung asking the status of the upgrade just to see what would happen:

Several key features of this phone have been crippled since the ill-fated ID1 update well over a year ago. A much anticipated upgrade to 6.5 was announced with two release dates coming and going. Is there still life in this device? When will we see the upgrade to 6.5 which will hopefully address the long standing and well publicized problems with this phone?

Thank you for your inquiry.  Unfortunately, we are unable to speculate when/if this software revision might be available due to the fact that this might lead to inaccurate information and confusion. 

Should this become available, it will be posted on our website in the Samsung Download Center.

Still a non-answer, however. 

I've been using trashcan's ROM, however he's not done anything else with it since December 3, 2009 when the 28008 ROM was released. However, in recent days .fenrir has picked up the stick and we have a 23563 ROM to play with. In my opinion, it's not as stable as trashcan's (ie using the USB cable hangs the phone)  but he's a self admitted novice and just cutting his teeth. There's already been a couple of fixes posted showing that there's interest in getting it right. I hope he stays with it!

Is it possible to run Android on this phone? Has anybody looked into this? I read with envy about the dual boot capabilities with HTC devices over on XDA and find myself wondering what it would take.
