Is it possible to use the GPS receiver without being charged data usage? I bought my Epix for the fact that it has WiFi and GPS so that I wouldn't need a data plan hoping that when I use the WiFi I don't need to connect to 3G and when I use a third party navigation system (i.e. Google Maps or Garmin) I wouldn't need to use AT&T Navigator.
An AT&T employee told me that when you connect to the internet with WiFi that you get charged for using data and the same when you use the GPS even if it's Google Maps or Gramin. WTF!?! What is the point of WiFi and GPS then? If you have to pay anyways, why include what SHOULD be free services? Is this true or is this AT&T employee a worthless piece of crap just trying to get me to purchase the data package?
I don't feel like the AT&T sales reps (at least the ones I've talked to) know much about their phones and what their capabilities are but instead only care about selling iPhones with data plans.

By default, I belive this is the case, however there are ways around it if your comfortable with modifying your phone. You must delete a string in your registery so that you can fully modify your internet connection settings, its the same process for tethering your phone, except when you get into “connections” I deleted the at&t internet connection, which keeps the device from connecting to the data connection. I do still get a pop up message from time to time saying it can not connect to the data plan, but you just have to press dismiss, the wifi and gps both work great still. When using google maps, I turn the “use gps” option on and make sure I am my wifi is connected to load a map of the local area then I am good to go. You get the popup message about the data plan quiet offten, but the map still stays there and your gps shows exactly where your at. I think garmin or tomtom would work a lot better since the maps are loaded on the device, but I dont have either one to try.

There is a better way. The annoying notification about can not connect to medianet is getting me pissed. Search for a small program named nodata. this program will allow you to enable or disable the data connection and you will not get the cannot connect to medianet or in other case get charge for it.

Hi Ftahir,
Had the same problem and fixed it. pls see my post in troublshooting under ims.cingular\
here is a brief descript
Hi everyone,
I finally figured out the problem !!! Here is what I found. When deleting a connection in setup it does not seem to delete it in the registry properly. I found a blog that showed you on the blackjack II and epix on how to change the registry connections to allow more than 1 internet connection. I went and followed the steps which were all set properly to allow more than 1 connection. BUT what I did find was that in the registry under connections there was still IMS.cigular connection and a wap.cingular connection even though I did not have them listed in my connections tab (in setup). So I proceeded to delete them from the registry and only left the fido connection that I needed and believe it or not Garmin works like a charms.
Thanks everyone for their input and help.
Maybe we should include this a a bug in the Epix.
