hacks and mods Samsung Epix Application Unlocker

Samsung Epix Application Unlocker

Download

Unlocking your Samsung Epix is a crucial to maximizing your mobile phone experience. Application unlocking your smartphone allows you to:

  • Modify restricted files/folders
  • Modify restricted registry entries
  • Install certain applications you would otherwise be prevented from installing

Application unlocking your Samsung Epix can be completely reversed/un-done by performing a factory reset (which will wipe everything off your Epix and revert it back to its initial state). Many of the hacks and mods on this Web site require your Epix to be application unlocked.

Restart your Samsung Epix after installing the Application Unlocker.

Note: Application unlocking your phone does NOT allow your phone to be used on a different carrier; that is SIM unlocking.

hacks and mods Remove ascending ring

Remove ascending ring

Download

Attention: This hack overwrites the Samsung E-mail Notification Patch. Until an work around is discovered, you’ll have to choose between the two.

Have no fear, the days of missed calls due to Samsung’s ascending ring have come to an end!

Stephen has come to the rescue with the NonEscalatingRing.CAB that makes your Samsung Epix’s rings start at full volume.

Thanks for the heads up on this one Stephen, everyone with a Samsung Epix is forever in your debt!

hacks and mods Remove or modify exchange policy

Remove or modify exchange policy

Download (Requires .NET Compact Framework 3.5)

For all of you that sync your Samsung Epix with an Exchange server that has a security policy, here’s an application for you! The Exchange Policy Patcher lets you control which, if any, Exchange policies you want to have enforced on your Samsung Epix. If you’re sick of entering a PIN to unlock your phone then check this out.

One really nice thing about removing your Exchange server’s security policy is you can use the Red key on your Samsung Epix to lock it – and unlock it using the * key. Oh, and did I mention this app was written by a Microsoft employee? Woot!

After removing the security policy from your Samsung Epix, go to Start > Settings > Personal tab > Lock to remove your PIN password. After this, you can hold down the Red hang-up/lock key for about 2 seconds to lock your phone!

If you get an error screen when you launch it for the first time, you probably need to install the .NET Compact Framework 3.5.

Note: most companies enforce an Exchange security policy for a reason. Please understand what you are doing in removing the Exchange security policy – I nor the author of this application are responsible if someone that shouldn’t gets ahold of your Samsung Epix!

hacks and mods Change ring and talk volumes

Change ring and talk volumes

A lot of people say that the Samsung Epix’s ring volume is far too quiet — luckily Samsung lets us change this using a hidden volume control utility.

Please be careful when adjusting these setting. I suggest changing the volume level in small increments (1dB to 2dB at a time) and test your new volume settings out each time, this will prevent you from inadvertently maxing the volume out and either hurting your speaker/headphones/etc or even more importantly your ears! I haven’t checked out the max volume end of the spectrum so I don’t know how loud it gets, but I don’t recommend trying unless you incrementally reach the max volume and know that its not too loud.

When you find settings you like, post them in comments!

Used the WM9713 Control Util to access the Epix’s volume control panel:

  • Launch the Phone app by pressing the green “phone” button on your Epix.
  • Dial: *#0002*28346#

To change the Ring tone volume:

  • Go to: Menu > Normal > Handset.
  • Changed the DAC to: -10.5db (this may be slightly loud for some people, if so try bumping it down to -12dB)

To change the Handset/Speakphone/Earjack/Bluetooth (BTMono) volume:

  • Go to: Menu > Talking > Select corresponding item
  • TX: Controls how loud people hear you
  • RX: Controls how loud you hear people

change volume Change ring and talk volumes

You can adjust the dB values to your preference.

Remember to select Menu > Apply after setting your dB values.

Default volume settings for the Samsung Epix:

  • Normal > Handset: 0dB, -4.5dB, +30dB, +20dB, 1.5dB, blank
  • Normal > Headset: 0dB, -3dB, +24dB, +20dB, 1.5dB
  • Talking > Handset: -3dB, -3dB, +12dB, -3dB, +0dB, -4.5dB
  • Talking > Earjack:0dB, -3dB, +12dB, -6dB, +0dB, -6dB
  • Talking > Speakerphone: -1.5dB, 0dB, +12dB, 10.5dB, +0dB, -10.5dB
  • Talking > BTMono: -17.25dB, -12dB, -9dB, -6dB

hacks and mods Remove animation and sound from start up and shutdown

Remove animation and sound from start-up and shutdown

Download

I’ve created a hack that removes the start-up and shutdown animations so you can turn your Samsung Epix on and off without having watch/listen to those irritating animations.

I haven’t timed it, but I think the Samsung Epix starts up and shuts down faster with this hack installed.

clean startup and shutdown Remove animation and sound from start up and shutdown

After installing this hack your phone will automatically be restarted

If for some unimaginable reason you want the animations and sounds back, just uninstall this hack from Start > Settings > System > Remove Programs > MySamsungEpix.com Clean Startup & Shutdown.

hacks and mods Remove AT&T Fn Shortcuts

Remove AT&T Fn Shortcuts

Download

As you’ve probably noticed, AT&T loaded your Samsung Epix up with a bunch of junk like that AT&T Mall, AT&T Music, etc. One of the slightly less annoying things they did was hard code some preset Fn-key shortcuts to these programs. Not only can this cause you to accidently launch these apps, but it also prevents you from using the preset Fn key combinations to launch other apps that you might actually use.

This hacks removes 4 of AT&T’s preset shortcuts so can make them link to anything you like.

This hack removes the following AT&T Fn Shortcuts.

  • Fn-C: AT&T Mall
  • Fn-M AT&T Music
  • Fn-V: Cingular Video
  • Fn-W: Media Net

Remote AT&T Fn Shortcuts

After installing this hack, go to Start > Settings > Personal tab > FN Key Settings and set the C, M, V and W buttons to link to anything you like!

I left the AT&T preset B, H and N Fn-key mappings because I thought they were actually useful (Bluetooth On/Off, Headset Manager and Mouse On/Off).

hacks and mods Using Your Samsung Epix as a Wireless Modem

Using Your Samsung Epix as a Wireless Modem

Download

Here’s an awesome hack for all you Epix owners with data plans (unlimited data is recommended for use with this hack)! You can now tether your Epix to your desktop/laptop and use it as a high-speed modem. If you’ve in 3G range the access speeds are nothing to scoff at, and even the Edge network is very usable.

FYI – tethering without an expensive tethering plan from AT&T is technically against their terms of use (read the section Prohibited and Permissible Uses). AT&T will probably not notice unless you move a TON of data through yout AT&T “unlimited” data plan account (ex. bittorrenting using your Epix). Personally I don’t abuse it and when I do tether its when I’m out and about and don’t have access to WiFi, so i’m primarily checking e-mail and surfing the web — which moves the same amount of data as I would using my Epix.

Update: Reportedly you get 5GB of bandwidth every month from AT&T.

This hack may not work correctly if you are using Slide 2 Unlock 2 (S2U2).

Anyhow, enough with the disclaimer, here’s all you have to do:

  1. This works via USB with Windows XP or Vista. It also works with OS X over Bluetooth (thanks Mike!).
  2. Application unlock your Samsung Epix
  3. Download and install this hack
  4. Go to Start > Settings > Connections tab > Internet Sharing
  5. Sytem > Internet Connection Sharing

  6. Select the PC Connection method
    • USB (This requires the Epix USB connection cable, this method is recommended)
    • Bluetooth PAN (This requires your computer/laptop to be Bluetooth enabled)
  7. Select “MEdia Net” as the Network Connection
  8. Click the “Connect” soft-key
  9. Your computer should auto-detect the that your Epix is trying to share. You should see a progress window that looks like:
    Internet Connection Sharing Progress Window
  10. After your computer automatically configures itself, you can now access the internet through your Epix’s data connection!

And as a bonus, your Samsung Epix’s battery will charge while it acts as your wireless modem (if select USB and not Bluetooth in step 5)!
