Microsoft has a set of programming tools that aid developers in making software for Windows Mobile phones. This set of tools is referred to as the .NET Compact Framwork. As with most things software related, new versions of the .NET Compact Framework are released, and your Windows Mobile phone much be upgraded to if you want to use software built on the latest Framework.

The newest version of the .NET Compact Framework is 3.5 and unfortunately the Samsung Epix doesn’t have it pre-installed. If you run into a program (it will alert you when you try to run it that you can’t without the correct version of the .NET Compact Framework intsalled) that uses the the .NET Compact Framework 3.5, download and install it using the link above.

Don’t worry, the .NET Compact Framework is backwards compatible, meaning that programs that require older versions of the .NET Compact Framework will run on the newer versions as well.

rlToday

rlToday is a free Today screen plug-in that aids in the creation of light-weight, simple themes for the Samsung Epix.

Themes on MySamsungEpix.com that require rlToday will be marked as such and automatically install the theme files in the correct directories. If you are using a rlToday theme from some place other than MySamsungEpix.com, you will have to copy the theme folder to /Program Files/rlToday/ on your Samsung Epix to install the theme.

If you’re new to rlToday, follow the steps to activate the rlToday plug-in:

• You must install rlToday on your Samsung Epix (Device) and not on your Memory Card.

• Start  > Settings > Today > Items tab
• Uncheck everything except for “rlToday”
• Select “rlToday” and press the “Options” button
• General tab > select the theme you would like to use (You must have already install at least one rlToday theme)
• Time tab > set your local Time and Location
• Apps > Add/Edit/Delete the application shortcuts that will show up on the selected rlToday Theme
  • Select an application entry and press the “Edit” button
  • You can update the Name, Path to Application and set a Custom Icon as desired to the selected application.
• Calendar tab > Set weekday abbreviations
• Click “OK”

Please note that most rlToday themes (including the examples in the above image) are not created for the Samsung Epix’s 320 x 320px screen (they are rectangular, not square), so they won’t work on the Epix.

Slide 2 Unlock 2 (S2U2) is a very neat little application that adds iPhone-esque unlocking to your Samsung Epix. S2U2 also includes Caller ID (check if it works on Epix) and Volume Control.

To change the defauly wallpaper:

1. Create a 320×320 jpeg file with the new wallpaper image and name it “wallpaper.jpg”.
2. Copy it to the gfx folder (default is \Program Files\s2u2\gfx\)
3. Restart iLock2 (Run Start > Programs > S2U2 > iLock2 twice, the first time will stop it, the second time will re-launch it).

For S2U2 to operate correctly on the Samsung Epix, you have to modify its settings as follows (big thanks to sfleuriet at HoFo for the settings):

• Lock when device wakes up – ON
• Lock when Screen is Blank – OFF
  On Battery Power:
• Lock when backlight turns off – ON
• Power Off in – 15 s
• but Blank Screen only – OFF
• Blank Screen on Talk – OFF
  On External Power:
• Lock when backlight turns off – ON
• Power Off in – 15 s
• but Blank Screen only – OFF
