Opera Mobile 9.5 Beta

Download Page (Use the Windows Mobile 5/6 Pocket PC link)

If you haven’t downloaded Opera Mobile 9.5 Beta for your Samsung Epix, get it now while its still in beta (read FREE)! Opera Mobile 9.5 Beta does a remarkable job of rendering Web pages true to life and allows you to navigate them with relative ease. Opera Mobile 9.5 Beta is light years ahead of Mobile Internet Explorer. The only other Windows Mobile Browser that can compete with Opera Mobile 9.5 Beta right now is Skyfire which can be slow due to its off-client Web page rendering model.

A couple of Opera Mobile 9.5 Beta’s most notable features are:

  • Double-tap the screen to zoom in and out
  • Zoom slider for more controlled zooming
  • Pan view by dragging your finger on touchscreen
  • Intelligent address bar that gives you a drop-down of recently accessed site’s as you type in your URL.
  • Handles Web sites with complex designs, though heavy Javascript and AJAX causes problems.
  • Automatically formats text to fit in your screen (which may come across as text appearing to not flow correctly, but really this is a feature not a bug)
  • Quick load and render times.

hi, i just downloaded the Opera Mobile 9.5 Beta and it seems to be working great until i went to youtube. when i try to watch a vid it says, you either have javascript turned off or an old version of adobe’s flash player? sorry if this is a noob question but i don’t know what to do. thanks jr

  2. david Says:

juston, I dont think Opera 9.5 can play YouTube movies :( .. Youll have to checkout the Skyfire web browser for that (www.skyfire.com).

  3. justin Says:

david, do you run skyfire or opera? can you have both on on the phone or does that cause conflict? thanks jr

  4. david Says:

    justin,
I run both Skyfire and Opera 9.5 .. There are no conflicts. Skyfire is nice because you can watch Youtube-style flash movies in it.

  5. justin Says:

i installed skyfire and everything works great besides the sound. when i watch a youtube video no sound? you have any thoughts sir? thanks jr

    Justin,

I recommend using Kinoma Play (or it’s free variant — Kinoma Free Play) for youtube clips.
    http://kinoma.com/

It does a lot more than just youtube clips:
    1. It does shoutcast/net radio/many other media streaming formats and sites.
    2. It has a search funtion you can use to find stuff on youtube/any of these other sites/formats. (You’re usually searcing in one at a time — like you’d go to search > youtube and then enter the search term).
    3. It’s finger-friendly
    4 It looks good
    5. It’s stable

    Thanks.

Opera 9.5 is a must. I used various reincarnations of it on my HTC Kaiser, and it works great on the Epix. One caveat: the “official beta 2″ seems a bit slower than the versions I used before. Also, the device/agent name don’t seem right. For example when you visit http://www.aa.com in Pocket IE, it knows to take you to the mobile version. When you do the same with Opera, you get the full version even if you have “mobile view” in the settings. No biggie, just a bit annoying.

  11. Paul Says:

Do we download the first link or the 2nd link that says “Gears-enabled technical preview…”?

  12. david Says:

Paul – i’d get the Gears version. It is newer and has Google Gears support (Google Gears allows browsers to be more powerful and run complex web sites more efficiently)

  13. Paul Says:

Thank you David. I down loaded it to my Desktop on my Laptop…what do I do next to get it installed in my Epix?

  14. Derek Says:

    David,
I was wondering, will you try out the portable Firefox version. (I don’t have one yet, but probably will soon and think that if this works good then I will definetly buy it. Please try it out and tell me what you think of it.

  15. Paul Says:

    Anyone there?

  16. Jeanne Says:

Can you have Opera 9.5 and leave IE also on the Epix? I’m guessing yes (considering the answer above re Firefox) but wanted to be sure as it does not mention it at the Opera site. Thanks!

  17. david Says:

jeanne – yes. when you install Opera 9.5 on your Samsung Epix, IE will stay installed. Infact its probably very very difficult to delete IE from your Samsung Epix. Install Opera 9.5 without any worries! :)

  18. Sharon Says:

Regarding YouTube – “There is an app for that” I use a separate Google app for YouTube, that has it’s own icon, and it works marvelously!

  19. Dawn Says:

I downloaded the program and it is in a file….now how do I make it work? I can open it from that file and make it work but does the program work to make every program work like that?

  20. Call me Tom Says:

A newer version of Opera Mobile 9.7 beta has been released.

  21. Mike Says:

Hi I just got the Epix and cannot do any livestreaming for audio. I was on the phone with Samsung level 3 support for over an hour and they weren’t able to assist either, although they were very willing to try and are looking into it. Any advice. should I get Opera on my phone. I want to be able to listen to my local public radio station they have a website that live streams. Will Opera mess up my syncing with outlook? Thanks to anyone who can assist.
    Mike

  22. moak Says:

Opera is decent. I used it on my Blackberry but for the Epix, I much prefer SkyFire. SkyFire’s interface with Facebook and Gmail is clever and useful (also can do Twitter, etc). Opera lacks flash, which makes it only slightly better than Internet Explorer. Some pages did seem to load faster with Opera (probably because the lack of Flash).

    Thanks for this site!

  23. Carina Says:

So which version of skyfire for the epix? I downloaded touch screen but it acts strangely. I can’t create a FB update, the dialog box opens but I can’t type anything into it…. Should I have downloaded non touch?
